1. BAN LONG LUN
INTERVIEWEE: Mr Failonglee, Mrs Xai Yang, Mr Yachongtor, Mr Pheng Kaenkham and Mrs Nin Kaenkham
🇱🇦SQUIRREL STEW: Skewer the squirrel, cook over fire until dry (10-15 mins). Cut into chunks. Soak split chili wood in water. Toast lemongrass, add to water. Boil squirrel chunks, grilled garlic, and grilled shallots. Add grilled chili, spicy wood, sticky rice. Mix, add salt, MSG. Include banana flower, and eggplant. Boil 10-15 mins.
🇱🇦SQUIRREL IN BANANA LEAVES: Pound sticky rice for flour. Clean and mince squirrel meat. Prepare lemongrass, spring onion, chili. Mix rice flour, salt, MSG, water for paste. Add minced squirrel, lemongrass, onion, and coriander. Wrap in banana leaves, secure. Place in bamboo basket. Steam 40 mins - 1 hr.
🇱🇦BBQ RAT: Clean rat. Mix MSG, salt, garlic, pepper, chili, coriander, and lemongrass in mortar. Make seasoning paste. Coat rat with paste. BBQ over fire for 1 hour.
🇱🇦BOAR FAT SOUP: Boil hot water for 10 minutes to simmer (not boil). Add the pork fat, salt, and MSG. Leave for 25 minutes to boil. Then add the Hmong mustard greens. Simmer for 5 minutes.
🇱🇦BOAR SAUSAGE: Mince boar meat and fat. Mix with salt, MSG, spring onion, coriander, garlic. Mash well. Stuff in the intestine casing for sausages. Boil 25 mins. BBQ 35 mins till yellow.
🇱🇦BOAR BBQ: Boil the boar meat until cooked. Season with salt and MSG. BBQ the cuts of meat for 20 minutes. The fat takes longer, around 45-50 minutes.

I'm not saying all Lao people are like that because I know a lot of really good and down to earth Lao people more good than bad, but some of y'all are hateful towards Hmong and Mien people for no reason at all. at the end of the day our parents are all from the same country and our fathers, uncles and grandfathers all fought against communism together that's why we're here in America. Ever since you visited the Hmong Town market in Wisconsin that one episode and mentioned how you'd been there a bunch and knew the people, I wondered if you were ever going to take one of them along with you and do a video on their original roots. You didn't just do one video, you did a whole series, and you did it with Yia. This has been a wonderful series to watch, both for that connection with Yia, and to see the Hmong people still in Laos, and their culture. Thank you, Sonny and the BEFRS team.

This whole series with the Hmong people escaping their own country and becoming a refugee in Thailand, I can relate. My parents were going through the same situation in Cambodia when they escaping the Khmer Rouge and trying to survive. My parent's also met in a refugee camp and had 3 kids. We were fortunate to be sponsored and come to America and start fresh. This did hit me hard when I went back to Cambodia to meet my relatives and see how they're doing and how well they are doing. It's something that can leave someone speechless, but love and respect your own culture and parents even more. Proud to say who you are and where you're coming from! Great job Sonny for having this kind of series for the world audience. A peace!

Laos is the ancestral land of the Khmu they were there before everybody and are the native people of Laos. Lao migrated to modern day Laos during 13th century from Yunnan, China. Hmong have been in Laos since the 16th century that's 400+ years.

She single handed built a small boat to escape Vietnam and we landed in Australia in 1979. She taught me what resilience really is. This episode hits home. Both my parents fled Laos during the war and eventually came to the states as refugees. The stories my dad told me about him being a 12 yr old fighting in the war were just as Yia explained with his father. So good to see my people living a better life today. I hope to one day go back to these villages and connect with these people.

It's crazy how similar food is across the world. I'm a Black American with southern roots and some of this food is so similar to what I grew up on. Mustard greens boiled with pork, pork sausage with natural casings, pork parts smoked over open fire, squirrel fresh out the woods, and communal meals.

Watched this episode with my family. My grandfather who is beside me, is visiting. He was a marine in Vietnam. 3 tours as an infantrymen. His last one, as a helicopter gunner. 4 tours total. When Sonny said, "My grandfather faked an injury to get out." He chuckled, and spoke, "We all did that our first tour. Some of us were just bad liars." I asked him if he ever tried to fake an injury. He responded. "Like I said, we all did. We were soldiers. We wanted a war. Just, not that one." Sounds like your grand pops was the majority. Great video Mr. Side. Never stop doing what you're doing.

This has to b one of my favorite series u have done sunny…I absolutely love the loas culture n especially the food…laarp is literally my favorite favorite thing in the world…perfect meal papaya salad laarp n sticky rice n a spicy sauce on the side is literally my go to meal

Yia is so funny, he’s a great addition to this show. He has a great chemistry with Sonny. Culture-wise and history-wise, I’ve learned so much from watching all of the series that you can never read from textbooks. ❤ Everything is so heartwarming and the stories of people they encounter and they interview in here are so touching. I wish this show can go on and on. ❤

Oh boy, let me tell you, I am absolutely hooked on Sonny's shows every time I watched them since his first episode! They're like a rollercoaster ride of excitement and entertainment. But you know what really grinds my gears? Those sponsors that Sonny is showing before we even get to the good stuff. Seriously, it's like they're stealing the thunder from the thrilling events we're about to witness. I mean, come on! Can't we save the sponsor parade for the grand finale? That way, we can fully immerse ourselves in the heart-pounding thrills without any interruptions. It's all about building up that suspense, Sonny. So, Sonny, if you're listening, please consider giving us the sponsors at the end of your shows.

The way they prepared their pig is extremely similar to how we prepare it in our town, Siaha, located in the northeastern state of India. During Christmas in our town, people from all denominations come together to prepare and organize food for our church members as well as anyone who would like to join. If you visit us during this time, you won't be disappointed; instead, you'll fall in love with it and create unforgettable memories. The meat and every other dish we prepare are incredibly delicious. As a Hmong American I appreciate the constant exposure of the Hmong people outside of USA. Sonny, when you have the time please go visit the Hmong people in China. You can find our Hmong (Miao) people in Yunnan, Guizhou, Hunan, Guangxi. That's where most of the Hmong (Miao) people resides. Many Hmong Americans that I know of here in America are absolutely clueless about our deep roots/history, and if you could shed a bigger image by visiting China that would bring a bigger exposure and understanding of the Hmong identity. Note* Yunnan Hmong (Miao) people speak the Hmong White dialect just like how Yia is speaking in this video. Most Hmong people I know always talk about Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and being thrilled about it to one day visit 1 of those countries. Which baffles me alot because why not visit China instead where it's actually OUR TRUE HOMELAND. There's a village called Xijiang Qianhu (1000) Miao Village in China where it's dominantly Hmong (Miao) people. Please visit this village Sonny. For those of you Hmong folks that are still skeptical about Hmong China, just look @ 8:18 where Sonny introduces the 2 names. Literally the name "Fei Long Lee" is that of Chinese names. It's no coincidence. We Hmong and Chinese share alot of similar things in common throughout ancient time (very very long ago). This is why I keep saying that we Hmong people should look more into China than Laos, Thailand, Vietnam. I mean yeah I get that some of your relatives and cousins are there (Laos, Thailand, Vietnam), but that's not the point. The point is this void of cluelessness that baffles me about my Hmong people in the USA.
