My father joined the Kriegsmarine in 1940 and entered the U-boat arm. His first cadet cruise was on U-331, and was aboard during the sinking of HMS Barham. A little known fact, but U-331 almost broke the surface after firing, as they didn't flood fast enough to compensate for the weight of torpedoes fired. He went on to be 3rd watch officer on U-969 in the Med.

My grandfather served on the Barham as a Royal Marine at Jutland.

Whenever I see that incredible footage of HMS Barham’s end, the venerable battleship rapidly capsizing to port & on her beam ends, when suddenly her magazines cataclysmically detonate, I wonder, for the life of me, just how it is possible that as many as 450 of her brave crew somehow lived to tell the tale.

The fact that the one survivor's first-hand report in the vid is so nonchalant about being caught in that explosion and then dragged under as the hulk sinks is some pretty impressive stiff-upper-lip on display.

Thanks for another fine profile of an important but lesser known ship that served in two World Wars. The photos were interesting as I could see the changes in Barham’s silhouette after her reconstruction. At Jutland, there was NOTHING afloat that could match a Queen Elizabeth class battleship’s combination of hitting power, armor protection, & speed. That they were still effective fighting ships 25 years later in the next Great War, is a testament to their brilliant design. (Even if it did necessitate refits & upgrades.)

Unfortunately the germans at jutland didn`t knew that and kicked Warspite with 12 " and11" guns so hard it had to limp home .recceiving british15" hits wasn`that problem for them,ask Von der Tann .Baden was carefully examined and astonished the british in many ways !

It's alot of effort to put good videos together, so thank you for that. Respectfully - what you've missed here is the whole cultural background of events leading up to the sinking. Barham was felt by many to be a "Jonah" ship and postings to it were somewhat disliked. Men had been lost in her construction and a number of accidents, running aground, and generally bad energy had surrounded her since the keel was laid. That she ended in total destruction was felt by some of the saltier members of H.M. Royal Navy to be inevitable.

i like the commentary! i do wish your videos had more visuals of the boat movements. because sometimes i get lost in the aural discriptions and then its just nonsense to me until i hear something i remember form some other story and guess how the actions went from last time i understood to where i reaquire a semblance of where things were. making the whole thing just a scattering of mental visages of boats in tatters, unknowing if my mental images are accurate at all. ... like i said - the stories themselves sound good, but better visuals would complement the stories. show the turns of the ships ?? I know what crossing the T means. but how that group got there is a bafflement to me. thanks , jeff r (wausau wisconsin) ship battle intrest.
