Nathan Mavris All the surviving battleships had claims to fame - Warspite just had the most, by a country mile: - In the thick of major capital ship battles in both WW1 & WW2 - She was the last surviving capital ship that fought at Jutland in 1916, arguably the biggest naval battle in history - which she survived despite taking 150 direct hits. - She was awarded the most battle honours of any Royal Navy ship, ever - She was awarded the most battle honours of any Royal Navy ship during WW2 - She is still the joint holder of the world record for the longest range naval gunnery direct hit on another ship. - She fired the very first shot on D-Day at 0500hrs, her opening salvo was the signal for the start of the attack. She continued to pour broadsides onto the German positions until she wore out the barrels of her main guns and was retired - talk about going out in style? Warspite was already an icon whilst still afloat. The 'Grand Old Lady' of the fleet. It should have been her, from the day she docked for the last time, there should have been no doubt or question about it.

Warspite was pretty much a wreck by the time WW2 was over. It was literally falling to bits after so much action. Real shame, once something like that is gone you can't replace it. Belfast was a relatively "new" ship though and was state of the art at the time, it served for quote a while after the war I think.

Part of her mast was erected as a memorial at Prussia Cove, Cornwall, where she initially ran aground on her way to be scrapped. The naval museum in Portsmouth holds several artefacts from her, as do several places across Cornwall. The guns at the Imperial War Museum are actually from HMS Ramillies and HMS Resolution.

My grandfather was a Colour Sergeant (Royal Marines) and I found out that he was on the Warspite during the D-Day landings - I think, on X turret. In 2016, I ended up at a house at a small cove in Cornwall named Prussia Cove, fell in love with it and booked a holiday there for my birthday in 2017. Turns out, that this is where the Warspite ran aground as it went to be scrapped - who knew. Also in 2016, visited Portsmouth Dockyard and was invited to attend a Battle of Jutland expo for free - and there was the Warspite again. She had suffered an almost identical hit, damaging the rudder, in the First World War, causing her to turn in circles for hours whilst the Germans tried to sink her. Coincidence, I'm sure, but all very strange.

My Dad served on the Warspite until it was damaged in the Med, 1943 flying bomb I believe, he was transferred to a supply ship in the Indian Ocean while it was in for repair, he survived the war and died in 1986, just months before he was due to retire.. he spoke little of his experiences as many were reluctant to do of that extraordinary generation, if he'd live longer I'm sure he would have realised how important his story was and opened uo some more... a hero, one of a generation of real heroes

Yes, British big warships were given that bland skyscraper wedge-block look.The original Warspite and her class were the best looking of those big battleships IMO ..... even better than the last American and Italian ones ..... solid, balanced, calmly strong looking, sturdy, like beautiful natural features afloat.Money to preserve her? yes but some thing deserve it anyway however tight things were. IMO scrapping her was more about RN lack of sentimentality and the public mood to move on to a peaceful new modern-looking world.

The HMS Warspite may not have been the most powerful battleship to sail the seas but no other battleship can touch her for the distinctive service she provided her country through 2 world wars. HMS Warspite tops my list of finest battleships ever built. I knew she was scrapped but the last part of this video sent it home. She should have been saved as one of Britains' National Treasures.

@skycaprob - Yes, the Warspite and her 4 sisterships all saw heavy action at Jutland. First they engaged Hipper's battlecruisers, doing significant damage to several of them. Then they engaged the main German battlefleet. The Warspite was the most heavily engaged of all, because her rudder jammed and she had to run a couple of circles with a very large part of the German fleet firing on her. Warspite took numerous hits from heavy shells at Jutland, but survived the battle quite well.

My father, who is still with us at 96, served as ships purser, CPO (Writer) Beattie. Once the ship reached Bremerton, the crew was disbanded. He eneded up in DC running the accounting office that oversaw money and material transfers between DC and London during the Leand - Lease program instituted by FDR to help keep the UK afloat before the US entered the war. I have an AP photo of him handing out paypackets on deck at Bremerton but can't seem to post stills on this site.

One has to take in to account that, at the end of the war, Warspite was in a poor condition, following an atack by german bombers off the coast of Italy, that nearly sunk her. It would have been extremely expensive to repair it and to maintain it, at a time when Britain was rationing a lot of things, including food. On that note, it still puzzles me today, why so much money was wasted at building HMS Vanguard, when the King George V class was enough for the country's needs.

@kennnmoran : You are probably right about differences in damages, but the larger the shell the greater the range. So the Yamato could blow our ships out of the water before we could begin firing. Our New Mexico and Tennessee class battleships had (12) 14" main batteries. Quite an awesome broadside, and the same layout was slated for the Montana class (16"), but were never built.

At Jutland W scored hits on Von der Tann,Moltke and Grosser Kurfurst,it recived 20 heavy hits and 9 of light or indeterminate size so can claim to be the 3rd heaviest hit ship to survive. If battle stars are the same as battle honours then W was awarded 11 Jutland Narvic Calabria Matapan Crete Libya North Africa Sicily Salerno Normandy Walcheren

Thanks. I suspect the reason was that after WW2, Britain was rather heavily into debt. Preserving an old Battleship wouldnt have been a priority. I think that whilst she was beached at Prussia Cove, pilots actually used her to help fix their position - LOL. Even in Death she still served her country. But hey, at least we still have HMS Belfast with us (the Royal Navies best cruiser). She was at North Cape and D-Day

Some of the best-looking BB's ever built, especially the Tenn class with (12) 14" guns on four turrets. Shame none were kept as museums. They could have been converted into missile cruisers with the removal of the rear turrets. We will never see armored ships again due to the cost of steel today.

Warspite did incredibly well to survive the Fritz X (German glider bomb) hit. The Italian battleship Roma was sunk by one of those and Roma was a bigger and better ship than Warspite! Warspite was a legend - a True British icon
@Ah01
@Ah01 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it survived one Fritz X - hit (and another very close miss) impressively, but it was then dead in the water and saved by the rest of the fleet and us navy tugs. Had the Dorniers not been intercepted from another attack, that would have been it. The modern italians battleships Roma and Italia both absorbed one Fritz x - hit and were still able to move on, albeit Roma slowed down significantly, and was more exposed beeing left behind the formatiom. It was the second hit that was fatal for Roma, but Italia (ex - Littorio) made it to Malta and internment. Warspite never got back to be a high seas fighting unit, but played important role with it`s three functional main turrets at the waters of Normandy later on.

Have seen barrels and napkin holders from Warspite on EBAY probably genuine as the company that scraped the ship had its name on a metal plate,but some are almost sure to fake.

H.M.S. Warspite is beyond reproach. Simple as that.

during WW2 warspite fought at calabria, matapan, defended the illustrious during the illustrious blitz, was at the battle of crete and ws badly damaged. she then escorted the fleet carriers during their abortive attempts to engage the japanese inthe indian ocean. she covered landings in sicily and salerno before being badly damaged again. she then covered the D-Day and walcheren landings being damaged yet again. thats just her WW2 record.

@jers59 The IJN had superb night optics, long base coincidence rangefinders and good training in night fighting but they didn't have search/firecontrol radar,RPC,stable verticals,flash-less propellant,long range star shells,integrated directors or a good ballistic computer.Only German tech as far as I know were radars just about good enough for station keeping.

A few old Bofors guns and Orlikons also a good idea a simple look in History books could have saved lives and ships.
