On my layout i have those Derails on code 70 and code 83 track they work fine just need to sand down the bottom some and ur all set !

@EvanstonSub I used a drimel with a sander on low speed and just sand a little at a time and checked it before Glueing

Hi Daryl, I have quite a few of these part as well - I haven't tried the derail yet - but I have read Greg's instructions and for code 83 and 70 you should sand/file the base of the derail and also maybe the sleepers to ensure no catching on stock takes place

Sounds like a plan. Would take some care as the base is pretty thin to begin with.

In Canada, gondola loaded with derailed grain hopper car upside-down. Some cars loaded derailed cars, locomotive without trucks (dummy). Modern railway operations nice to watch.

Daryl I am so happy see how doing with ho scale layout I am very proud of u I also working mind soon be working getting my collection also been driving a lot you can used a caboose for switching if any questions I used mind for getting from my layout and also in switching what place on your layout used on it west vaco or cement track

As a previous conductor at UP, size wise that looks to be about the correct size, possibly still a smidge larger than the true size but very close.

Maybe reduce the tie thickness to set it deeper into the track? Would it still operate properly?

Yes, that could work, but it's pretty thin to begin with. I'm sure it is possible to use with code 70 and 83, just would take some work.

Hi Daryl, I have a couple of operations question for you - I was just wondering how you 'turn' your trains so that the 'same train' that goes to Green River from Ogden comes back from Ogden to Green River and vice versa ? Plus, similarly, how do you handle empties in/loads out - i.e say an empty coal train goes from Green River to Ogden, how does that train get back to Green River to come back to Ogden without being 'seen' ? Or do you 'stage' all the trains prior to an operating session ?

The two locals that originate at Evanston and terminate in the staging yard turn into new trains the next day. i.e. LDR07 becomes LUJ62 and LUJ63 becomes LDR17. The green river staging yard and the Ogden staging yard are physically the same yard. Eastbound trains that go to Green River continue through the staging yard and become the same train leaving Ogden and vice versa.

There is no code that I know about. You do need to be logged in to get the best prices sometimes due to the MRSP practices of some manufacturers. There are few sales and no gimmicks, just the lowest prices every day for everyone :)

The derail is placed on inside of track and on the side away from the main line. So cars that get away and hit derail away from the main. So if that was the main in the background you placed it on the wrong rail.

I have a bachmann EOT device that picks up power from the rail and it flashes like the real thing

@@EvanstonSub if you’ve never really done it. I recommend a small container and point it towards it and put your hand over it. Helps prevent them from going flying. One day I’d love to come out there to show y’all how we switch on the railroad and get things done 😂😂

@@EvanstonSub - you are correct, this type of derail definitely installs on the inside of the rail.

The derail is located on the inside gauge of the track. It is usually painted a bright yellow for visibility for RR crews to see.

Also the blue derail sign is also on the inside gauge about 25 - 50 ft ahead of the derail. And the switch leading towards the derail is locked away from the derail. If at a customer siding, they have to be contacted to remove the lock on the switch and take down the derail and sign at both ends of the track. RR controlled siding with a derail it’s a different procedure. You may need to look it up in the rule book.
