Yes, because in a show like this it's all hands on deck. Plus they need her supervision and input to make progress, because ultimately she has the final say. If they throw something away and she DOES end up regretting it (because she didn't input) then it's a massive trigger for rehoarding and refusing help in the future. I agree though, I'm glad it ended successfully

It’s because there’s a process to helping a hoarder clean up. Many hoarders say fine just throw it away and don’t participate in seeing what’s happening and then they get upset when they see it’s all gone and hoard again. They’re doing certain things to make sure she’s actually ready to have others throw things away for a reason not to make her look bad.

Well, don't know why I love these hoarder shows until now. I'm one of those people that everything has to be in its place and if it's not used for a while, it goes to a thrift store to someone who needs it. By far, this is my favorite episode! The people do not understand how much pain this woman is experiencing. They should not ask her to do any of the work if she doesn’t choose to. People with chronic pain have good and bad days and stress can exacerbate the pain. If Dorothy is agreeable to let the trash go, that is more than half the battle!

The hoarder needs to be a part of the cleanup to rewire their thought process with items. Otherwise, they'll just go back to re-hoarding any area that had just been cleaned. A hoarder's brain would look at a t-shirt with tons of stains and holes and think of all the possibilities or memories associated with it when a normal brain would recognize that the shirt is no longer serving a purpose in your life. A hoarder's brain identifies an old jar as being "useful" and then proceeds to keep 50+ of them even if they only need 3. A normal brain could recognize that there are limits.

I thought they were too, but then I remember a couple of recent uploads: 1. A hoarder whom many in the comments thought could be autistic; whether he was or not, he was largely compliant (aside from wanting to see every item, but that seems a common trait). His sister went from calmly talking to shouting and crying at him (he hadn't been difficult in any way), and the therapist stood by and allowed it. 2. A hoarder who only asked that his sisters stay out of one particular room. The sisters went in, found his outfits and self-gratification objects, and proceeded to berate him for "letting" them find that. The therapist took their side. I remember seeing many comments to the effect that he wasn't hurting anyone and had tried to keep them from that area, so there was no reason to stand back and allow him to be shamed that way.
