I was just about to write about how impressed I was that her sons are so openly caring, loving, concerned and able to elucidate those thoughts so clearly...plenty of adults never learn to do that! I can't even imagine how difficult it must be to remain so supportive of their mom in a situation that can only be unimaginably frustrating for them! The son in the gray shirt who excused himself when he learned about the stealing is amazing! He recognized he was getting angry and that it wouldn't help him or his mom or the situation, so he said he needed a time out and left. The level of emotional maturity is astounding I've never seen someone cope with rising anger so well. I can only dream of such having such an emotionally mature family, clearly she did something right!

It makes me sad in the comments when people say, What's the point, they are just going to fill that space back up with junk anyway. Maybe, probably. That doesn't mean they aren't deserving of help, and kindness, and compassion. If it does nothing more than give them a temporary respite from their pain, a brief window of relief and maybe even joy, isn't that enough? Life would be so much easier and better if we would all just help each other when we are down. We all need it. We all can give it.

Bless her heart, I did some shoplifting when I was younger and it was all about control. I was a single mom working full time, trying to hold it together with the constant feeling that my life was spiraling out of control. I was severely depressed and shoplifting was the only time I felt any semblance of control in my life. Finally I was caught and the embarrassment was enough to put an end to it. I have never stolen anything since.

I also shoplifted when I was younger. My mother was abusive and didnt provide for me despite having the money. My clothes were always full of holes and I was never like any other kids, buying stuff in the cantina or even having basic school supplies. So I started stealing it. Everytime I stole it felt like I was getting revenge because I knew it would be embarassing for her if I got caught. When I grew older and started making money on my own, my stealing problems "magically" disappeared. Even to this day though if Im a little low on money, the abuse I would get when I asked my mom for money deters me from asking anyone to borrow money and the temptation to steal comes back. Im trying my best though and I havent stolen in a few years.

These kinds of shoplifters I do feel for. It’s a real addiction. You can say whatever you want but I’ve talked to someone that used to shoplift and it made her want to die each time she it but couldn’t stop She got help and hasn’t done it for 9 years. Im proud of her.

Ellen's sons are absolute gems!!! But how could these awesome, levelheaded men live there? This series on A&E is a Godsend calling attention to a serious mental disorder that has only recently been recognized. Much more help is needed for so many invisible people who seemingly live a normal life in public.

I think a lot of hoarders , since 95%of them live in 1 room, should try the tiny home. At least then they'd be comfortable, small space, and not be able to hoard so much stuff!

Hoarders will hoard the space available to them. I’ve seen pics of people who live in one room, stuffed to the ceiling.

You must be new and not seen every episode. There’s been hoarders that move in with someone and start hoarding the bedroom and then the rest of the house. It’s a mental illness and they’ll hoard any space.

Is there something more than just cleaning the house that can help the person that hoards? Because wouldn’t they go back to hoarding if they don’t get counseling?

I think training/counseling them how to shop without bringing excess items into the house is probably the only way to stop it. They have to stop the habit of bringing stuff in or else the hoard will come back.

People who hoard have a problem, and people who steal have a problem, so it’s a double whammy for this lady- never judge anyone- You don’t know the deep rootedness of why people do what they do. God bless and heal this lady onward, especially after opening up. Now, let’s hear all your ugly secrets- yes YOURS!

I had to take her side with the plants. They are living things that just need a little care, like her. There was plenty of actual trash in the yard for them to toss. Why insist on tossing the concrete planters, Dr. Z? She's a nurturer, let her have something to take care of. Maybe its just an old lady thing with me, but I love my tangled garden on the back porch, reminds me of my grandmother.
