Today we had the opportunity to visit the Hobbiton New Zealand movie set. Kara and I are both BIG Lord of the Rings and Hobbit fans so when we started to plan our trip to New Zealand we knew we wanted to visit Hobbiton! While RVing around New Zealand we stopped close to the town of Cambridge, New Zealand where the Hobbiton movie set is located.
The entire area around Hobbiton makes you feel like you're in the movies! Hobbiton is surround by green rolling hills dotted with sheep. We were lucky enough to camp only a few minutes away from the movie set. It literally felt like we were camping in the Hobbiton movie set! After staying the night only a couple minutes down the road, we woke up early to take one of the first tours around the Hobbiton movie set. We usually don't pay for tours like this… However, the tour around the Hobbiton movie set was totally worth it!! If you're on the North Island of New Zealand you should definitely take the time to take a tour around Hobbiton!

SO. COOL. I love Lord of the Rings and this place is definitely on my bucket list. I recently visited the Harry Potter WB Studio Tour in London and I loved that so much. Behind-the-scenes stuff is fascinating!

I was very honored to have been chosen to work at The Shires Rest Cafe last year. Unfortunately a lot of people lost their jobs due to the Covid19 outbreak. Hobbiton is still open but its only Kiwi's going there at the moment and the hours and amount of tours has changed for now. I am blessed to live in Matamata which is where Hobbiton is based. Thanks for sharing the video and I am glad that you both had a GREAT time. :-)

when I went to the set it was all cleared out and bare. Now it looks so much better and is worth the money to visit.

I have not seen all the movies, but Idid read all the books during a 3 month stretch in hospital in the ‘60s and became a fan. Love to get back over to NZ and check out Hobbiton.

My husband and I took this tour on our Honeymoon! We LOVED IT. We were told some of the same interesting facts as you but a couple were different! Nice to know they switch it up a bit! This takes me back! :D

As someone who went to school for Film & Television production (and ended up with a Communications Degree), I'm a huge movie person. I'm not a big fan of the LOTR franchise, but I did see the Hobbit, and this place is amazing! It's so rare to find a set that is left up after production ends. Most often, the sets are temporary and demolished after filming, even if the actual location still exists. I'm glad Peter Jackson had the good sense to leave NZ with a wonderful place that people could come and enjoy. Not only is that kind to the fans, but great for NZ tourism. Everyone wins. Another place like this, to a different degree, is The Kualoa Ranch in Oahu, Hawaii, where the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World films was made. While there are very few things left standing from the Jurassic Park series (just the main sign posts and the fallen log), there were more remaining from Jurassic World, including the Gyrosphere loading dock and the Indominus Rex pen & building. It's pricey (like everything in Hawaii), but worth it if you love those movies like I do. :-)

If you haven't already, you need to watch the special features on the extended editions of the movies. They are really cool and have a lot of info about the special effects and all those little details that you were talking about. :)

I watched the films, finally, with a guy who liked to introduce all the girls he dated to this series. Absolutely did not love it in the slightest but would absolutely visit Hobbiton as part of a road trip on the North Island. When in Rome etc.!

How did you buy tickets for Hobbiton? Did you buy in advance? What website? We want to bus from Auckland and then head towards Tauranga. Suggestions?

Hi Debby. I live nearby and would recommend the Waitomo caves (bit pricey but lots of options) and other amazing free stuff to see like gloworms and waterfalls. It's an hour west of Matamata. You can camp overnight at Waitomo Caves Top 10 But there are free campgrounds too 15 minutes south in Te Kuiti. Then head over the hills to Tauranga and up to the Coromandel. Google Hahei beach and swimming with orcas. My favourite place in all NZ. Hope you have a wonderful time.
