In this Hobby Cheating tutorial, I take you through two methods for doing dead and putrid flesh. Dead flesh is a lot of fun because you can use so many colors and achieve so many interesting effects. I take you through some of my favorites and how you can do both zombie and vampire flesh tones. Hope you enjoy!

A brilliant tutorial, during which I found myself giving thanks to God for seeing the palette, which makes the explanation much easier to assimilate(when you start to dance back and forth with the different colours and mixes is a bit hard to follow your spoken explanation). Now there is no excuse for monotonous zombie skin tones. :)

Very very nice, Vince, Thank you for another great tutorial. Question about the Vampire flesh. If I wanted to add subtle veining would I use a turquoise glaze and paint it in similar to adding lightening effect to power weapons? Oh and Secret Weapon Miniatures makes a Baby Poop wash, would that work for the rotting flesh?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 жыл бұрын
You could, but you would need an incredibly sharp brush and a very light touch, as they wouldn't really be visible at this scale, but if you can have a faint (very faint) lines that are very thin, it could be done. As to baby poop, yep, it would be great, perfect color for such a purpose. Thanks for watching and glad to help as always.

Very cool video; I can see both color schemes being useful for a variety of things. I'm glad you covered the tears; depending on how graphic you want to go, you can also add patches of black-gray as the flesh continues to putrefy and become more liquid. Could you perhaps do a video on something like Drow Elf skintone? I realize its unlikely to be used for wargaming miniatures persay, but for other fantasy miniatures it could come in handy.

How would you paint the Tyranid Leviathan scheme? I would say like the dead flesh but undertone in Cadian Fleshtone and glaze a warm white. I am looking for a fast way to paint Leviathan and this video can help with the scheme's white flesh.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 жыл бұрын
I don't know Cadian fleshtone exactly, but I remember it being a little more tan. You may want to start with something a little more pale and/or mix with the white itself as your mid-tone, but yes, that could definitely work.
@trevorhoffman9721
@trevorhoffman9721 6 жыл бұрын
I was not sure about the color, my notes were not around, but I believe something more tan will work better as an undercoat. When you say midtone, do you mean after the tan undertone you can glaze with tan white, later on finishing with white glaze? I think a video reply would work best for trying to explain this all. Should I just make a video and link it to you somehow? Email might work, but it is not the safe option.

2:50 I love using ink in my airbrush but have found that the transparency is a downside when I go over black (or near black). Because it covers badly I end up using many more layers of ink. On second thought it is only a downside if you want to save paint (ink), because it doesn't take that long to build up and not having to thin your paints saves time which you can use to build up layers of ink until you are happy with the result. It is a downside if you don't want your shadows to be glossy. Hmm...
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 2 жыл бұрын
Sure, it's why I'm generally working over a zenithal for these purposes.
@Wijkert
@Wijkert 2 жыл бұрын
@@VinceVenturella I do the same, but I meant spraying inks from below where there is no grey undershade. I mean there could be grey if you don't mind that the shadows aren't too deep, but contrast is generally king so the darker the better.

Hi, do you have any tips for frozen undead skin? I am currently mixing fleshtone with some almost-white-light-blue as my main color and Vallejo dark sea blue in the shadows. Then I cover everything with agrax eartshade for good measure The result is ok but I was wondering if you have a better way to do it
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 3 жыл бұрын
So I have a video coming soon for undead flesh (it's oils, but the colors would be the same). With undead flesh, the key is so subtract the reds, and add in purples, greys or greens. As to highlights, I think you are on the right track. Adding a desaturaed cold blue is a very valid way to go. You can still keep the shadows warm with a purple, and then a little bit of very. very subtle green glazes can go a long way. I would honestly avoid the all over wash at the end. That brown is too warm. You could use it for some light stippling to simulate more rotten or dirty parts of flesh.

Hi, I bought a set of these Scale 75 Fantasy and Games colours, with these flesh tones, but I was surprised how thin they are, very poor coverage on solid black for example. Are they designed to be thin so they show some of the colour below, because that makes the colour of the undercoat quite important then? Like the purple/grey undercoat you use here. At first I was thinking the pack I got was ruined somehow as I can see the date on the box says it was produced in 2015, and since I know how well "normal" scale 75 colours cover and how thick they are. Your input here would be greatly appriciated, so I know if I should contact the shop and ask for a newer pack. Thanks. Also great advice on skin, I'm copying it and want to get into using these scale fantasy colours.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 3 жыл бұрын
So it varies with some of the colors, but the general story with them (and frankly all Scale 75) is that they're fairly naturally transparent. They really aren't meant to work over black (and as a general rule, I don't ever recommend painting over straight black, I always work over a zenithal). Their natural transparency means they work best over a lighter undertone where more of the true color can show through. These paints are great for glazes and for that type of work, if you are really needing to reset a color with a high opacity paint, in general, these aren't great for that.
@michaelhansen2309

@@VinceVenturella Great feedback, thanks a lot for responding. I understand about the black undercoat, it was just a test model, it's usually not what I would do either, it was just very apparent that they couldn't cover it at all and that's why I was suddenly wondering if there was something wrong with them. I tried on a more creamy white undercoat with the Hellbound flesh and it was much better, started playing a bit with it and I think I understand them a bit more, as you say they are more glazes, you build up effect by their transparency and blending. It's a very different paint style than what I'm used to. I'm thinking maybe a light grey/lidt purple undercoat will do the trick then for decaying flesh, and work the paints on from there following your technique. Sepia/camoshade also works very nice for that disgusting shade. I'm working on finding good methods for skin/flesh/tentacle nastyness for 40k Death Guard/Nurgle by the way, that's why I came across this and Scale75, there was a lot of interesting colours in those Fantasy and Games packs. Again thanks for the feedback.
