In this Hobby Cheating Video, I take you through a better way to use your airbrush. Instead of just using it to base coat or for initial work, use it as a tool to do effective and fast glazing that can make your life so much easier over a value sketch. Hope you enjoy!

You know what's really cool? I took a screenshot of your finished paint job and with photoshop i "posterized" it which limits the color range and makes it look more blocky and wouldn't you know it, it looked just like the blocked out colors you started with. So one could theoretically find images online of people with all their natural real world smooth shading, posterize it, and they'd have a rough template for where to start this process. Cool stuff!

"controlled imperfections" the way I see it is that, when you dissect a paint job into small squares or smallest individual parts, you can tell the work went in, the brush strokes, the transitions, the colors, but when you look at the whole mini, our brain switches from "seeing the leaves" to "perceiving the tree", the imperfections go under the radar, only to reappear when you're looking for them. That gives the paintjob that feeling of greatness, I know what I am looking is not perfect, I know it is a heap of paints and labor, but at the same time it feels amazing to let myself be fooled by it. Awesome tutorial, as always Vince, you're a godsend :D

I just realised that you'd probably want to know: your videos have transformed how I think about paint. Translucency, tone, lighting tint (although I haven't managed to use that yet, I now think about it), etc. I watched quite a few wet-blending tutorials, but yours (specifically a loaded-brush one , I think) was where it clicked and I realised that having multiple colours on model wet at the same time was allowed. So thank you.

Hey Vince, you elaborated a little on a really great point here that you've mentioned a lot before about incorporating hues of red, green, blue etc into skin. That type of information is really helpful for us beginners. The Vallejo Beige Red example of a muted and desaturated red vs something like thinning mephiston red and not understanding why it doesn't look right is a place where I struggle in glazing. I think experienced and talented artists like yourself have this great understanding of color intensity and the relationships that is has to theory that the rest of us could really continue to benefit from in future content. A lot of artists point to color wheels, and while that's interesting for me as a beginner on figuring out which major hues to use, it seems the magic to great painting is really in understanding how to choose tones and shades that compliment the hue for the particular effect. The value sketching you did is mind blowing when I try to unpack the amount of knowledge and skill used there. Where it's really easy to understand the values in balck and white in something like the Chaos Marauder value sketch tutorial you did, it requires a lot more perception to see how those same rules apply once you change your palette to red, purple, yellow, orange, etc. Thanks, as always, for providing us with such incredible information in an easy to understand format.

Vince - another great tutorial, and a perfect follow-on to #233 on Caucasian Flesh tone. Even though this was with airbrush on the larger model it's easier to see the initial value sketching areas, and whether with brush or airbrush how to blend down->up (repeat ad infinitum) to gradually get the smooth transitions. I've been trying the techniques from #233 on the latest model - struggling but getting a little better each time. Hope to put this one up for PMP in May … Thanks!

I'm going to have to practice this a lot. It looks like a good time saver but something that needs a loooooot of practice :) I love yellow (Dorn fan boy too), and right now I'm thinking just simple thin layers of zenith highlights and then edge highlights to achieve this (using your recommend base colors for yellow of course lol). When I improve with the airbrush I am certainly going to give this a go. All in good time, and thanks again for your tutorials. They're really helpful and inspiring.

One thing that helps with the GAHHHH problem is to use an airbrush with a needle nut that lets you put a hard stop on the paint flow amount. If you know you're going to be glazing, crank that baby down and don't let yourself turn it up.

For me the biggest benefit of using airbrush glazes is that you can get really high contrast with more precise placement and with different shapes than “round” by using the paintbrush, then save a lot of time by using the airbrush to smooth it out. It’s a best of both worlds thing.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
It's a really good point. You just have more control to set things up, control volumes and get the exact shapes you want. Then it's just quick refining.

Excellent video as usual, Vince. You continue to be a source of inspiration and knowledge, and I thank you! I have a question, hopefully you'll have some insight. What PSI do you have your compressor set to for glazing? What needle size? I ask because I just can't seem to crack that code: no matter what (using .4, .3 and .2 needles, adjusting airflow way down with "air control dial", etc) I just can't seem to get an airbrush glaze to work. I invariably wind up with either spiderwebs or paint splatters that would make Jackson Pollock proud. Any suggestions?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
So I run a .3 all the time and 18 PSI, but the key is the airbrush I am using, the Iwata Hi-Line has an air flow control at the front that reduces the air that can come out. It really restricts the overall airflow and gives you a finer control. Barring that, the key is lots of practice with trigger control and turning down the PSI a little (say 13-15).

So I will admit I can be sure of the exact colors, you could always check the Paint COmpatibility rack (there is a Paint Rack App that shows all the compatible paints). That being said, you could certainly mix these out of any of the deep purples from the range and the crimson colors.

Love it, I do wonder if the value sketch was a bit "detailed" for what you end up getting with the glazes afterwards. I'm looking the value sketch of the biceps, fore-arms and bewbs and thinking... I'd have sketched that with the airbrush as well... (just for speed) Things like the collarbone, knees, elbows and ofcourse face (as you can never have enough detail in that) do make sense to apply with a regular brush though.

So I tend to do it around 15-18 PSI, but if you are just starting out or are unsure of your trigger control, you might want to go down to something like 10 PSI.

Great video, I've been experimenting with this sort of thing recently so it's really useful. Do you have any thoughts on what to thin with? I noticed that when I thin with a medium as opposed to just thinner or water, I get a more transparent effect which is useful sometimes.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
If you are using some airbrush medium and getting good results, absolutely nothing wrong with that. FOr me, I use a mix of Thinner (medium) and flow improver (80/20) and I find that works quite well.

I did not do a video of that part, but really, you can do it with anything. It's just blocking in strong colors in a way you want to try. You can be crazy like I did here, or you can be much more reserved, the initial sketch is just choosing some colors you like and not worrying at all about blending. :)

This was a .3 needle at 18 PSI, but that is somewhat of a lie. Keep in mind, I am using an Iwata Hi-Line which has an airflow control on the nozzle itself, which effectively lets you really control the air. If I was doing it manually, it would probably be down around 10 PSI.

When you go back to the brush, what’s your trick to make the brushed part not standout next to the airbrushed part? We had a thread on the pmp about that. It may be an even bigger challenge on a large model.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
So the key is you work thin. THis is isomething I see come up a lot. I think it's something that can be very tricky all the same. When you go back to the brush, the key is you work thin in a more glaze consistency, so you are only moving the colors slightly, it will feel more like the airbrush and align with the colors without causing any issues. If you go back to a strong layer, you are going to feel the difference. Now, let me say, that's actually fine. You can go back and reinforce or adjust in some places with a strong layer and you can then go back to the airbrush again and smooth it out, as always it can be an iterative process. :)

Sure, so with the Iwata Hi-Line I am using a .3 needle. You can certainly use a .2 or something if you want a tighter control, tbut the real key is actually in the trigger control and air flow. That's one of the reasons I like the hi-line, it has the extra air regulator on the front, so you can forcibly restrict the flow and make sure you are getting soft pressure.

@soviet9366
@soviet9366 4 жыл бұрын
Just my thoughts: You can't not use a mask - the airbrush is atomising particles, not all of which will go on the model - some will remain in the air for god knows how long. My setup is an extractor booth and mask and a separate room with an open window to use them in. I don't use my airbrush in the same room I sleep in for example. You don't want any kind of paint dust particles getting into your lungs.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
I would recommend a little booth, you want to trap that paint and you can run the fan at the back to draw away the particulates. The trick is that little fold up booth I often use is pretty small. You need about a 3'x3' area for your airbrush. If you have a tiny child's desk like we used in Kindergarten, its about that amount of space you need. I don't generally wear a mask, but different people have different levels of sensitivity to this so I always say wear one if you have any concerns. That being said, as long as you are using only non-toxic acrylic paint, a cloth mask like what many of us have made recently to venture outdoors will work just fine, especially in concert with a little booth. If you use anything but acrylics, you want to get a real mask as enamels and those sorts of things are very toxic.
@soviet9366
@soviet9366 4 жыл бұрын
@@VinceVenturella Acrylics are non toxic, but any dust particles getting into the lungs is not going to be good to longer term health. A sad legacy of many of our industries has shown that a lot of health problems take decades to emerge. A mask, spray booth of some kind and ventilated work area seem basic minimums.

Nice video as always Vince. I see your ratio is 80/20 thinner to flow improver. My question is how much paint are you using? It’s difficult for me to get the right consistency. @VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 3 жыл бұрын
So there can be several things at play here, but at minimum I am thinning 1-1 (and often far more, up to 8-1 for some glazes). So I will say, some of what you are describing is just trigger control and practice. That being said, thinner is always better, and you just need to work on letting only a little bit of paint and only a little bit of air through, building up control is just like your normal brush control. That all being said, if you up the flow improver a little, you can general use slightly thicker paint.
@christophercornacchio9679

Ah, ok. I’ll have to pick up some flow improver then. The thinner just isn’t cutting it with water (brush tip gets clogged quite often). Thanks for the detailed explanation Vince. Some top artists (including yourself) make it look easy. I will stick with. Keep up the great content.

Hi Vince, I have consistency issues with my airbrush, especially when trying to go cery thin. Sometimes paint hits the model way too wet and causes a glossy unseemly mess, while other times I just fling globs and speckles of paint onto the model while the mix in the cup is already very thin. The latter problem transfers into the first one with added dilution. This doesnt apply to all paints, but happens from time to time, which is super annoying when I want to layer thin consistent layers for a nice gradient on a flat panel and a bunch of speckles completely kills my preshade. I use vallejo thinner and flow improver in ca a 2:1 rate to maybe one drop of paint or less. Is it too much thinner causing dry tip / too much flow improver breaking up the consistency of the paint maybe?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 3 жыл бұрын
My best advice is it's mostly practice honestly. You have to control the airflow. Here is my best advice, get your thumb up under the trigger and practice haveing air flowing through just slightly and then gently and just barely rocking the trigger back and forth to let through minimal amounts of paint.
@alexanderz8052
@alexanderz8052 3 жыл бұрын
@@VinceVenturella feels like when I manage to use it with minimum airflow and minimum paint it works best yeah. so its practice practice practice as always. Just kinda frustrating since I thought I had airbrushing working at least. but this problem seems to heavily depend on the colours used (problems with scale abyssal blue but scale antares red works like a dream). If paint hits the model wet is there anything else I can do? Pressure? Dilution? Additives? What rough ratio of thinner to flow improver would you recommend?

Awesome video, as always!! One quick question... you talk a lot about how "anything worth doing once is worth doing three times" and how if it were a competition piece you would go over all the steps again... but even though I work as thin as humanly possible, I still find that at after I work something more than once or twice it always starts to look exponentially worse, and if I drop eight to ten hours into a fig it looks like complete garbage. How do you find the line? XD
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
Well, the basic answer is there is no line once you have the brush control, but that is something that comes with time. So let me break that down. Essentially, think of your piece like a pyramid. When you start at the bottom, you are working wide, focusing on the large volumes, As you move up the pyramid, you are coming to a focus on the inidividual areas, refining smaller details and using thinner and more controlled applications of paint. For example with this piece, I did go off camera and refine some things more I didn't like still and basically did this back and forth a few times. The key is as you are repeating, you are thinning your paint, working more in glazes, focusing in on smaller and smaller details, adjusting exact volumes, etc. Hope that helps.
@Mikey__R
@Mikey__R 4 жыл бұрын
I'm with you Ben! You get it almost right, and then the next brush stroke ruins it. A while ago, Uncle Atom did a video on overworking a piece. I think maybe, the more advanced you become and the more control of the paint you have, the more you can work the model before you go too far.

I would start by giving them a nice thin tone of blue black. Then I would do the same thing I did here, which is hundreds of little hashes in a near white (for raven's wings, I would use cold white, here I used warm). I would then glaze in (either by brush or airbrush if available) some blue black pulling toward the base of the feather and leaving the feather tips showing the least glaze over the hashing.

So-it's not *exactly* the case that you painted the flesh first and then put skin over the top, because the lower level also captures the basic light and shade, but I think it's not ridiculous to see that as part of how the translucence operates. So that leads me to wonder-you were talking about reds and blues-especially at this kind of scale, would it benefit the result if you painted the major veins in during the first step? On people who are pale like me, at least, they seem quite visible under the skin! I continue to love the videos, of course.

It matters, as you want to be able to control those thin layers. This is not feasible for 28mm you say, but would an extreme value sketch make sense if you finish the blends by brush? My biggest problem with wet blending is simply getting enough opacity, having to blend the same blend for every layer. Many of the blending tutorials you created so far (I think I've seen them all) start to wet blend from a white-to-grey sketch, and that just never works for me because the results is so "muted" unless I apply more layers, and as a beginner every layer of blending takes forever 😁
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
Just to clarify my point I made, it's harder with a 28mm miniature, not impossible, just tricky unless you are very precise with your airbrush. THe key with wet blending is you need to use more paint and it needs to be thicker. You are painting on the miniature and you want that to be thick amounts of paint. The key with the blending is that it should be a fast process where you are using lots of paint and spreading it on the miniature and hopefully, it's faster. :) - Hope that helps.
