Yes, him and another channel I watch called Sam Holmes sailing. He is kinda like Shoestring but he lives and travels on a 28-foot sailboat. Neither have a ton of stuff, but they are living their best life no doubt. Like Shoestring, he never stays in one place too long they both have seen more places than I've seen in 52 years of life.

It's fascinating how he travels with no car, no airline, and often camps instead of taking a hotel/motel room, and seems to have no worries at all about traveling in this cold weather. I would be freaking out if I had such little support in the way of traveling like he does.

I know this vid is old but first time I seen it. And I've subscribed for awhile. I can't believe how many travel routes exist in Alaska... Are people working or just checking things out? I been to Alaska. It was 1978. Dad and me used to travel by van, 3 weeks of the year, every year, just me and him. I grew up with just dad and me. He bought a new chevrolet van in 1978 with his earnings from overtime at work, but he wasn't ready to beat up the new van we just took delivery of for this trip. We took the 1971 Chev hippy van on the trip. We loaded extra alternators and water pumps, 2 spares tools out the wazoo, you get the picture. On the Alcan about half way all the sudden the motor just cut off for no reason it seemed... We looked at each other and coasted to a stop. The dual 3 inch exhaust pipes that exited just ahead of the rear wheels on both sides were packed with mud! A long screwdriver pecked it out and ran like a dream rest of the trip. We wrote post cards in August at 11pm with no lights on. Made it all the way back towards Detroit and had a blowout on the left rear in the left lane going thru Chicago at rush hour. Had to dig out the spare from all the other stuff in the van. Made it home and I still got the pics to prove it!

Me to and a disabled vet could get a housing voucher or section 8 without the long wait ( I didn't need it then) I once looked up susidised housing in Santa Barbara about 14 yrs. ago = an 8 year wait. You could be dead by then! I ended up in 2007 moving to Chicago (now in Boston) and getting married for 5 years until she passed away. That's 2 times in my Life or what I call getting struck by Lightening twice. The gods must have been favoring me but as late they are not listening. I did get a dog 6 yrs. ago so now I have a best friend! Shoestring and maybe some of the people here will become real online friends. They seem friendly enough. His credit rating is for the birds! I bet if he offered to pay his lease for a year and a higher security deposit an actual ownerer would think about it. Many owners have managers do the work for them and they are heartless go by the book kind of people. Real Estate developers are mostly a bunch of leeches! ( I know a disabled desert storm vet who ended up in a nice inexpensive appartment by the lake in Chicago. The owner was a nice old lady but did he have to hustle to find it. ) I like to believe "If there's a will there's a way." Maybe it's just a Myth like the Yellow Brick Road?

@@thebusterdog921 I grew up in Connecticut. Live in Perth, Western Australia now. We are going into Winter where it drops to 4C on a cold night. That will do me! I love Summer. The cold keeps out pussies like me and maintains a high standard of people living there who are tough!

@@420_Logan Actually depending on where in Alaska you pick, Minnesota can be a lot colder and more brutal. As a matter of fact, most companies/businesses in Alaska are very discerning when it comes to hiring people from the lower 48. If you have lived your life in N Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, etc they are more likely to hire you. There are many people from the lower 48 who have romantic ideas about Alaska but once winter hits and they haven't seen the sun for over a month, slipped on the ice, and winter is just getting started...those people book a plane out of Alaska and never return.

Hey Shoestring, here's an update on the MV (Motor Vessel) Joseph and Clara Smallwood: On August 11, 2011, it was announced that Joseph and Clara Smallwood had been sold to Merrion Navigation S.A. of the Marshall Islands (in the south Pacific; part of Micronesia.) Her name was shortened to Smallwood and she sailed to Alang, India and was scrapped along with her elder sister Caribou. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Joseph_and_Clara_Smallwood. Scrapped is another word for 'recycled.' Her steel may now be part of a giant container ship plying the world's five oceans.

People love watching this because we all want to adventure. I know I do. I already have been on many adventures myself. I am 40 years old. I'm about halfway through raising my child to adulthood. Once they are on their own I am going to head out. I'm going to make it a point to go on the same routes that shoestring went on. I can't wait man. Hobo Jank will emerge from Ohio.

I don't know but it's like somebody high (up in the goverment) doesn't know what to do? Did you see how packed freight trains riders are in Mexico. It looks like the old Depression days where Hobos were stopped from entering California!

I agree with you Bill. I learned something new watching this video. I thought all ferry boats were small compared to Ships. That looks more like a ship to me. ( Pardon me for Iabels help me to understand but they are tricky sometimes?) Also it trigged a fond memory. My deceased father was a Merchant Marine. Everytime I called it a boat he'd say no its a S - H - I - P!
