We are finally back with some AFL reactions! Continuing our little journey through these best of the decade videos. Wanted to check out some big tackles, bumps, etc this time around. Had a few extended pauses throughout where I try to figure out the rules. I think I've got a decent understanding at this point but definitely need some clarifications on stuff so let me know in the comments. What do I checkout next?

After just 2 minutes of googling you now have a better understanding of the tackling rules than most AFL umpires

I’m a Bombers supporter and I completely agree. Couldn’t we sack the Match Review morons and several of the worst field umps? Sorry, still wingeing about the round before last or whenever the hell it was. 😅

Yes Eamonn! Glad you’re back with the AFL reactions. Keep ‘em coming! I’d say that first tackle was legal - brutal, but legal. Contact just needs to be below the shoulders and higher than the legs (also not directly in the back). The other thing is the way you bring a player to the ground, over the last few years the league has tried to reduce concussions by penalising tacklers who throw players to the ground after tackling them or drive them into the ground head first Bumps are best if it’s just shoulder on shoulder. Once again, nowadays if there is ANY head contact, it’s immediately penalised

Well done on the tackling research. You’re doing a great job interpreting the rules.

Glad you took the time to check the rules. You understood it well. Yes, the AFL has altered rules to further protect against “accidental” head contact. Generally, any hit to the head is a penalty, and often they result in suspensions.

You are one of the first ever KZfaqrs I've seen who instead of just saying "I don't understand what that rule is - it makes no sense" has actually looked up the tackling rules! If I could give a 5 star review I would!

Thank you! I used to watch a sports reactor from Australia awhile back that did the same stuff when reacting to american sports. Always appreciated it so I try to do it in my videos when I feel it's needed.

The one at 6:42 when you asked why he pushed him - they are brothers. One cleaned up the other so the shove was a bit of a friendly 'screw you'. The Selwood family are one of several family dynasties in the AFL with all 4 brothers playing at AFL level for 3 different clubs. Sometimes there are 5 or 6 members of the same family - fathers, sons, uncles, brothers, grandfathers - who have played at senior level over the years. The Rioli, Shaw, Ablett, Daniher, Brayshaw and Silvagni families come to mind, but there are plenty more.

Hey man, Aussie who loves hockey here. You've got the rules nailed pretty well, only problem with the sport is there are a LOT of grey areas when it comes to the rules and interpretations of said rules lol. Feel like you've got a really good grasp of the basics though. Head contact is much more heavily policed nowadays even compared to like 5 years ago. Most of the time if you nail someone in the head you'll be getting suspended, at the very least you'll be giving away a free kick to the opposition. Hip & shoulder and bump are the same thing too yep. Hope you enjoy the sport man it's in our blood down here lol

21:07 I think the Hawthorn (brown & gold) player dropped his shoulder low enough that it was technically legal, but you’re still going to get some neck snap from the rapid deceleration which will jar the head

There is somewhat of a onus on the players not to duck into tackles to draw a high tackle penalty, but sometimes it gets missed

You are right in your comparison to ice hockey. The bump is what I think you would call a body check. This has always been the tool of the enforcers in the game as opposed to the tackle which is really just a grab to catch someone in possession of the football. Unfortunately the bump is all but gone because it is too easy to catch someone in the head. You need to check out the older footage to see how brutal it used to be, I think here comes the boom is what the main one is called.

Main rule is hit between shoulders and knees. Outside those is an instant NOT OK hit. Within that area, there's special instances that aren't ok, but mostly anything goes

Yeah, sounds like the trends in Aussie rules are like hockey. In the 70s and 80s there were plenty of high hits that weren't penalised. Now, you cannot make contact with the head. If it is accidental, it will be a free kick and if it is careless or deliberate, it will result in a suspension (no "sin bin" or send off rules in AFL).

AFL has been played throughout the US and Canada for 25 years plus, check out Canada AFL and you could find a local team to support or play, both leagues are an amateur league but would be a great way to experience the game first hand, cheers

In regards to how many injuries and how long you can play Scott Pendlebury from Collingwood is 36 and coming up 400 games and as of last week has played in front of 20 million people live and still a great player.

A player in the game last night Geelong v Collingwood) hasn't missed a game for 10 years! Can't remember his name, is he playing for Collingwood? Anyway, I think he's coming up on Stynes' record.

I’ve always said that hockey is almost the only other game that compares in speed and sheer toughness with the AFL. And the WAFL, ( the women’s league not the West Australian league) is pretty bloody great too. There’s an Irish game, played with big sticks, hurling I think! Like field hockey but faster and really rough and tough.. I wonder do women play professional hockey?

I've had a few requests for hurling. Will take a look at it eventually. Yep there are womens pro leagues for hockey. Most haven't been sustainable and have died out after a couple years but there is a new league created by a billionaire that is looking very promising.

So it’s tackling below the knees and above the neck is not allowed when the player has the ball and no yo can’t tackle someone if they don’t have the ball it would be called holding the ball I love watching people learn about the sport of footy and seeing them just amazed

As this is the official AFL channel video all if not most of these were legal (at the time anyway). You're spot on about head hits like most other sports it will result in suspension nowadays. It's worth having a look at one of the unofficial big hit's compilations like the below that shows the good bad and ugly so to speak. This one is a good recent one. The further back they go the harder they were tho.. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pN2dfb2Y2d_ToIk.htmlsi=qYa0Wd4WGHShRk6W This one solid as well but the audio might be a problem for copyright kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7Z5hJqnsbC9eXU.htmlsi=QDDoZujECPKyUaDd

No player is sent off the feild ever. .they can hit the players in the head and knock out as many people as they want.but it will be a suspension when you face the AFL tribunal in a few days.😮

A few days ago a 24 year old player was forced to retire after one too many concussions. So yes, the game has changed! So sad for him I’m sure. But it’s to avoid that awful thing that was called being “punch drunk” once, and we now know that it’s a horrible, progressive brain condition.
