Good that you checked out the match, although such short highlights hardly tell the story of the game. And as others have mentioned, the All Blacks have played England 44 times since 1905 and none of them were "friendlies'. In the context of the sport and those who love it, it matters every time. The best teams possible are selected.

Ryan Papenhuyzen from the storm was having the best years on his career in 2019/2020 in late 2022 he and a raiders player collided knee to knee which broke Papenhuyzen knee in 9/12 pieces and he was out for nearly 2 years …he finally made it back November last year only to break his leg 3 game later then earlier this year his leg was broken again so he is coming back from injury and playing well ..hopefully now he is past all that and can play injury free for a while Also watch one of our games but not vs the roosters I think we will lose to them unfortunately

As this is the official AFL channel video all if not most of these were legal (at the time anyway). You're spot on about head hits like most other sports it will result in suspension nowadays. It's worth having a look at one of the unofficial big hit's compilations like the below that shows the good bad and ugly so to speak. This one is a good recent one. The further back they go the harder they were tho.. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pN2dfb2Y2d_ToIk.htmlsi=qYa0Wd4WGHShRk6W This one solid as well but the audio might be a problem for copyright kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7Z5hJqnsbC9eXU.htmlsi=QDDoZujECPKyUaDd

Yeah, sounds like the trends in Aussie rules are like hockey. In the 70s and 80s there were plenty of high hits that weren't penalised. Now, you cannot make contact with the head. If it is accidental, it will be a free kick and if it is careless or deliberate, it will result in a suspension (no "sin bin" or send off rules in AFL).

Main rule is hit between shoulders and knees. Outside those is an instant NOT OK hit. Within that area, there's special instances that aren't ok, but mostly anything goes

You don't see shoulder hits in rugby because it's illegal. You need to use your arms, too many blokes were getting KO'd with shoulder charges.

The one at 6:42 when you asked why he pushed him - they are brothers. One cleaned up the other so the shove was a bit of a friendly 'screw you'. The Selwood family are one of several family dynasties in the AFL with all 4 brothers playing at AFL level for 3 different clubs. Sometimes there are 5 or 6 members of the same family - fathers, sons, uncles, brothers, grandfathers - who have played at senior level over the years. The Rioli, Shaw, Ablett, Daniher, Brayshaw and Silvagni families come to mind, but there are plenty more.

Some of these aren’t tackles they are “hip and shoulder” bumps.

You are one of the first ever KZfaqrs I've seen who instead of just saying "I don't understand what that rule is - it makes no sense" has actually looked up the tackling rules! If I could give a 5 star review I would!

People talking in comments about points that would have been if tries were allowed and penalties were not missed... not realizing that the game would have changed ...all depends on the scoreline - teams could get even more drive and motivation from a different score... so can't base it on what could have been... also highlights doesn't show how intense the game was and the charge down by Springboks that resulted in Ireland missing the penalty
@gamortie
@gamortie 19 сағат бұрын
There is somewhat of a onus on the players not to duck into tackles to draw a high tackle penalty, but sometimes it gets missed

21:07 I think the Hawthorn (brown & gold) player dropped his shoulder low enough that it was technically legal, but you’re still going to get some neck snap from the rapid deceleration which will jar the head

You should try livestream the next Ireland/SA game on Saturday, and you can learn a lot about the game of rugby from people in the chat. There's a channel called QSN that livestreamed this past weekends game that you should look at to give you an idea on how it's done.

Definitely am going to try to. I've been doing a similar thing to QSN for NRL matches but haven't had a chance to do any Rugby ones yet. Looks like my tv provider is showing the games this weekend.

Glad you took the time to check the rules. You understood it well. Yes, the AFL has altered rules to further protect against “accidental” head contact. Generally, any hit to the head is a penalty, and often they result in suspensions.
@macdac9861
@macdac9861 23 сағат бұрын
You are right in your comparison to ice hockey. The bump is what I think you would call a body check. This has always been the tool of the enforcers in the game as opposed to the tackle which is really just a grab to catch someone in possession of the football. Unfortunately the bump is all but gone because it is too easy to catch someone in the head. You need to check out the older footage to see how brutal it used to be, I think here comes the boom is what the main one is called.

Yes Eamonn! Glad you’re back with the AFL reactions. Keep ‘em coming! I’d say that first tackle was legal - brutal, but legal. Contact just needs to be below the shoulders and higher than the legs (also not directly in the back). The other thing is the way you bring a player to the ground, over the last few years the league has tried to reduce concussions by penalising tacklers who throw players to the ground after tackling them or drive them into the ground head first Bumps are best if it’s just shoulder on shoulder. Once again, nowadays if there is ANY head contact, it’s immediately penalised

Tigers started the game so well just let our discipline kill us in the end. We also bombed a few tries that the highlight doesnt show. Players like Api, Pole, Fainu, Bula and Galvin were playing really well this game. Good signs for 2025 when we get Luai and Turuva from the Panthers.
