Awesome video mate. I was going to mention him too. From what I heard he was not only a very hard man but also very humble. I admire that about NZ players, very humble and down to earth. Trying to find a video from about 10 years or so ago where they spoke about how neat and clean NZ players leave the dressing rooms after a game. Met loads of kiwis and along with Aussies they are some of the most relaxed and kindest people you will ever meet

Jerry’s daughter was raised after this accident in Canada by her grandparents. She spent a long time in critical care with serious head injuries. At that time she was only 10 weeks old….so she has been through too much. She since then has been to NZL for memorials etc. It’s truly heart wrenching. Jerry Collins was phenomenal and so respected by all….RIP ❤

Yeah, they've changed the rules a bit for player safety. High tackles used to be just a penalty, but it was abused sometimes by aggressive players to get a really hard hit on someone, sometimes getting someone down is worth the penalty... (A friend of mine actually quit playing high school rugby because he was too good, and the other team would target him in the ruck, or hit him high "accidentally", right before half time) Now there are more clear rules defining how dangerous a tackle is, and will punish it depending on a few factors. (How straight is the tacklers back, did they wrap the arms, did they lead with their shoulder, is there any mitigation attempt to avoid harm, etc.) There are a vocal minority that would rather see people get injured than change the game, but Imo, just because you got hurt playing a more violent dangerous game as a kid, doesn't mean your kids need to also.

Yeah similar things happened in hockey for sure. It's such a dangerous sport. Parents have stopped allowing their kids to play it in favour of other things.

Rugby tackle laws are becoming ridiculous now. High tackles used to get you penalized. Now you get red-carded.

I taught my boy's to aim for the diaphragm. Shoulder in the diaphragm driving up. Snaps the head forwards. Has a dizzying effect.

The all blacks played the Hong Kong world sevens just recently you might wanna check that out

I think the interpretation of the laws are just a lot more strict. Before they would only give a penalty if the tackle was deliberately around the neck. Accidental contact to the head were seen as just that: Accidental. They would not even get penalised. Nowadays, if there are any head contact, it's a straight red card. No exception, no softening the blow. It's a mandatory red card, does not matter if it's accidental or not.

Since you're looking at defensive players I'd like to recommend a 3 time B&I Lion captain, Alun Wyn Jones. The Tribute video is kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nd6bfLF1ndSUdGg.html It's not the safety rules that people are upset about. It's niggling little changes they make because they think there is too much kicking or too much running or whatever. For instance, they want to promote running the ball so they make it almost impossible to win a ruck by committing more defenders to the it. What happens next is that defenses quit joining rucks and join the defensive line. So now there is no place to run with the ball and so offenses start kicking more.... All from a change designed to encourage running with the ball. Unintended consequences.

Please react on South Africa’s Joost van der Westhuizen, arguably one of the best scrum half’s ever. Also a very sad story!

Will do him sometime in the next week or so. One of the more requested guys.

No argument about Joost being one of the best, as a NZer I would say Joost, George Gregan & Aaron Smith top 3 in no particular order.

most of these tackles by todays laws are red cards. some of them were yellow cards then. not too many. the sport needs to be safer, we have to protect players as much as we can.

Great era for rugby tackle laws. The high tackle was normal you just weren't allowed to go for the head but the chest and shoulders were perfectly fine. It was a penalty at most now it's a red card.

Yes tackle rules became softer! Rugby until early 90’s players where allowed to stump and rake opposition on the ground
