You are the man! I’ve watched all your 223 and 300 blk series and now I’m going to take peak at the 308 if you do it. The time it takes to reload, shoot and then edit in addition to research is crazy! Best reloading channel by far. Keep up the great work!

Watching you shoot groups got me into reloading. Watching you shoot 5 shot groups and you get 3 shots into .5”, then the 5th shoots an inch high and it’s deflating. It’s like scratching a lotto ticket. I don’t know how to describe it. Thank you for introducing me to this amazing hobby. I’ve been doing it for 6 years now and am very sad to see you stop making videos. But I hope whatever you are doing makes you happy.

Some testing I did about 6 or 7 years ago with CCI 400, 41, and 450 primers: 25.0 gr AR-Comp, Hornady 55-gr V-Max, 16" White Oak Med Con Barrel: CCI400 - Avg 3054.4 FPS, SD 19.31. CCI41 - Avg 3068.9 FPS, SD 13.83. CCI450 - Avg 3054.6 FPS, SD 11.01. 24.0 gr AR-Comp, Hornady 55-gr FMJBT, same gun: CCI400 - Avg 3046.60 FPS, SD 26.65, CCI 41 - Avg 2945.90, SD 14.42, CCI450 Avg 2949.30 FPS, SD 15.55. 26.4 gr Varget, Hdy 55-gr FMJBT, same gun: CCI400 - Avg 2940.80, SD 33.72, CCI41- Avg 2950.60, SD 20.37, CCI450 - Avg 2894.20, SD 32.49. 27.4 gr BLC(2), Hdy 55-gr FMJBT, same gun: CCI400 - Avg 2890.70, SD 19.79, CCI41 - Avg 2860.30 SD 34.70, CCI450 - Avg 2906.30, SD 29.38. I basically concluded that there wasn't enough difference in the performance of the three primers to justify the additional expense of the 41s or 450s, with the powders I was using. Also FWIW, I've never had a slam-fire when using 400 or 450 primers in any of my ARs.

I started reloading in 1990 with a factory Ruger Mod 77 bolt rifle chambered in 30'06 Springfield. Self taught & those days were pre-internet days so all of my information came from reloading manuals and magazine articles. Still amazes me how reloading industry has exploded in components and available information with the absolute biggest improvement being bullet technology. My old '06 will still shoot 1/2" groups with Nosler Ballistic Tips. I commend you on well thought out and presented information on all aspects of the hobby. Best I've seen on the web really. Keep it up. ALL military bulk bullets are crap...a waste of time.

Thanks for all your great vids! You most certainly go to extremes to present a fully informative video about the subject. Before I even found/ followed you on youtube I had picked cci 400, h110/w296 to use in my 10.5" & 16" 300blk. both are pistol gas so no need for a1680. Your extensive testing has kinda confirmed my conclusions from all my reading/research/testing to find a single powder/primer combo that works well with most bullets weights and velocities for the 300blk. I simply couldn't afford to test such a wide range of components like you do. I will continue to watch and learn, 300blk isn't the only thing I load, it's just been the funnest lately. Going from super quite subs to supersonic loads in an AR by just changing the rounds is the cat's meow. thank you for all the work you put into helping the reloading community.

I appreciate your continued commitment in making these vids. I am conducting load development for a 71.7 grain lead cast PC 223/5.56 round. I have been successful using the RCBS auto dispenser and validating the weight on a separate Dillion scale. I load the charges that pass both scales, save time and sanity of the manual trickle method. Just sharing another technique.

Another great video sir. I've also done extensive testing of primers and I have been highly anticipating this video. I am super happy to see our results agree. I have found in most applications the CCI 400 to be the most consistent. When it was beat in a particular application it was always a close second. I used to use federal primers as much as possible but after all the testing I now just buy CCI 400 for everything rifle related and shoot them with confidence. Your video makes me that much more confident.

thanks for the videos. I just picked up some CFE BLK and coated 215 and coated 165 grain projectiles. I also have some 190 grain Sierra MK to try out. Broke in my new 10.5 1in7 Ballistic Advantage barrel with really good results with Remington UMC 120 grain ammo. Tried 150 grain American Eagle and was sloppy. Primer choices were many next hurdle. I have 3k of the cci 400 so it will be nice to keep using them and not have to add another specialty component. Thanks and keep up the good work.

You could probably do another ladder test with your BR4 primers and find load with CFEBLK that would shoot well with those. Could be the BR4 primer doesn't work well with the charge weight you chose. Lots of variables there, but that's what makes reloading fun(and sometimes frustrating).

Great work and data, thanks for this video. Essentially the data is suggesting that primers could impact velocity by 100 FPS max. You should do a blind experiment where you load up 10 shots using different primers with you "best recipe" for a gun/ammo/bullet combination. Shoot the groups without knowing which primer belong to which group and see if you the shooter and system is good enough to see a difference.

Still need to get my 300 dies, I bought a RCBS set awhile ago. The first step from the RCBS was to disassemble and clean the powder thrower, !!!! I'm stuck taking it apart just to clean the oil that it came with to preserve the stupid thing, instructions lame or I'm an idiot.. This is going to be a slow process...

Excellent video! I'm glad to have watched this video because I getting ready to start loading for 300 BLK and the current primer situation is dire (12.21.2020.) I just happen to have a very good stock of CCI 41's. I also have a very good stock of Federal small rifle match. I'll have to try them both. Getting CFE BLK powder is going to be difficult but I have a 8lbs of WW 296 to experiment with. I'm mainly interested in subsonic at this point and I picked up 600 Sierra 220 Match Kings a while back.

Great video. Thank you for taking the time to put everything together. I know it was a lot of work and time. I never thought there would be much difference in pressures and velocities from primers. One observation. Not criticism, just observation. You were testing the various primers against a constant.... the same powder load. What if you reversed this? What if the constant was the primer and you ladder tested the powder? I think you could achieve better results with each primer if you varied the powder loads. Once again, thank you for taking the time to put this together!

I'm just kidding with you JRB, I would definitely own this caliber if this state I lived in (IL) allowed suppressors. Also looking forward to some more 5.56, 308, 9mm content. (you know what the majority of the world shoots.) more kidding there. Although I may get into 6.5 creed so I'm going to need you to also start reloading for that caliber. Lol. Newer subscriber here. Great videos. You briefly mentioned it, but I also noticed from Hogdgon’s reloading data for CFE BLK that it produces very mild pressures. Question: have you considered converting a small batch of cases from small rifle primer pocket to large rifle primer pocket and see what kind of velocities you can get? I mean, you do joke about blowing your face off from time to time so it seems like a reasonable question ;)

Maybe the 450's burned slightly faster not given the powder time to ignite, as the 400 might be just a tad slower or less power and the powder got the max burn, In the SBR anyway.. Just a stupid guess ..

25:30 ish. after coming to my own conclusions suppressing is a nice feature to keep the ear doctor bills at bay but I really don't see the use of it outside of that. Sub ammo is slow and unpredictable you can go sonic but that just shuts the gate. if the worse case was to come about suppressing would not help you in a firefight or even a long-range exchange don't know if you ever been shot at but let's just say i know you don't hear ('unless you are at close range") the discharge of the arm until the hiss or high pitch buzz of the projectile going by you. it goes like "hiss' sonic crack' bang" not a sequence you will soon forget. if the sender is on his mark I doubt you hear any of it. an answer to a question unattainable. not likely a dead guy is going to be able to tell you if he heard the bullet coming that killed him .the right amount of propellant can be found with a little work I'm convinced. suppressing would do little to conceal your location from your quarry after even one missed shot. maybe it could do so in the case of others discovering it in high traffic areas but that's a subject we hope to never discuss though, not off-limits in privacy. giving long hard thought about all scenarios. the application where useful are all unpleasant, to say the least. close quarter night fighting for example. I'll let common sense. lead you to the others. but yet again worse case in such a situation civilian night equipment from what I read is far lessor than law enforcement implements or good forbid military. in other words, suppression is comfort food for your ears. anything but that for hitting your mark. at least for now. I don't have to tell you what a disadvantage Joe American is at if the sH!t hits the fan. I fear what our scholarly framers feared is come to be before our eyes and the days of beans and bacon and pass the ammo is over. so I say we have bigger problems to solve. give that some serious thought please for all our sakes. forever live the free world.

What are your thoughts on the CCI 400 (or other regular small rifle primers) in the 300 BO and AR platform? I've read in many places, and I have seen actual tests that clearly show the regular primers show primer flow and flattening in the middle range loads whereas the 41's, 450's and Win 7 1/2's don't show pressure signs until very high in the powder range. Supposedly this is due to the magnum primers, and especially the 41's as having thicker cups. Some places wil say only 41's should be used in the AR platform to avoid, not only premature flattening, but also slam fires. I just got into 300 myself and based on what I'm seeing, I'm opting to not use the 400's or any regular SRP's because of this and waiting until I can get my hands on some 41's, 450's or 7 1/2's.

If the difference between the CCI 400 and the CCI BR-4 is only that the BR-4 has better quality control, then both should shoot about the same velocity. The SD might be a bit better with the BR primer. Your results are confusing to me. Maybe the difference is due to primers is masked by many other variables.
