As it seems you've been a longtime owner of the Mark XII - any issues with the durability of the supposedly fragile JLC 889 ebauche? Tim from Watchbox always alludes to IWC learning a hard lesson in using the 889 for sports watches, which prompted JLC to develop the 975 autotractor movements.

Knock on wood, it’s been ok so far. I don’t wear anything for very long periods of time, but I’ve not had any issues. Also, I believe that the 889 base was used by quite a few other high end brands.

I really like the Mark 12 also, particularly on the bracelet, such a classy watch. The newer version……well 6 and a half grand is a BIG wedge for such a watch. Overpriced in my opinion.

Looking at today's secondhand market, where the XII is worth the most and XV trailing it in second, XVI and XVII being undesirable, XVIII and XX being still worth less than the first two, it would seem that time has told.

Really wish they’d reintroduce this design language to the standard Mark.. this is to me the quintessential mark design… the current model serves as a redundant smaller pilot which they already have.

If you look for a good alternative to the Mark XI: go for the MarkII Hawkinge!
