From the old Speed network, Jeff Hammond hosts this profile of legendary NASCAR crew chief Harry Hyde. During his career he guided Bobby Isaac to a NASCAR Cup championship in 1970.
Hyde was the inspiration for the crew chief (played by Robert Duvall) in the 1990 movie Days of Thunder.

Listening to Harry Hyde talk about tire temps tells me that he's the inspiration for "Days of Thunder" and the Robert Duvall character.

Harry Hyde was right there with Smokey Yunick and Junior Johnson in developing sneaky ways to circumvent the NASCAR rule book.

He's cooler than anyone I have seen in NASCAR and I have just now been introduced to him through this video. I only knew the name before. I have loved it NASCAR for 20 years (way less after the chase ruined it) and watched it in the early 80s when it wasn't on much so I couldn't learn all about it like in later years when all races were televised. He's the kind of guy u meet once and figure out bevause he is an open book and the kind of guy that you'd be stuck with throughout life because he really loves people. What a killer dude. His son seems like a real good guy too.

This video was released 4yrs. ago but Randy died in a plane crash enroute to Martinsville about 20 years ago. Rick lost his brother, his 2 nieces and his son Richard III bka Ricky and some senior HMS members / friends. The HMS drivers weren't informed until after the Sunday Cup race. 1 of the HMS cars did win. 1 of Randy's last engines was a special order for Jimmie Johnson's personal, restored Camaro.

Tim Richmond was a driver. Tim Davey Allison and Richie Evans probably would have doubled petty or Earnhardt for wins had they lived to finish their career. And I don't doubt the greatest drivers of their class
@davidh1249
@davidh1249 4 жыл бұрын
@@ballzmahonee5645 ,They would've never come close to doubling Earnhardt's win total,much less Petty's.If you extrapolate Davey Allison's career,He was on pace for 40-50 wins and maybe one championship(two at the very most).Richmond,as talented as he was,only had one great year after being a journeyman driver early in his career.They were both great drivers,just not all-time great like Earnhardt and Petty are recognized to be.

Thank God for that - when Old Millwalkie sponsored Tim Richmond still - or maybe as soon as he drove the Folgers car.. I loose track of these things, I'm pretty sure it was at Pocono where I spent the last 40 laps passed out under the trough the men pissed in [in the so called bathrooms] sound asleep.... too much Colt 45 malt liquor !! although I'm sure i was a sight to behold down under there !!!

Randy Dorton was also a legend in his own right. I understand the loss of Dale Earnhardt being such a terrible thing but for those of us who have lived the life behind the scenes the plane crash that claimed Randy, Ricky the other Hendrick employees and family was s bigger loss to stock car racing than could be imagined by a casual fan.

We should cherish these stories and people because the days of the good ole boys are gone sadly. And nascar wonders what went wrong, now you have to be politically correct and look like a Hollywood star. So far away from the roots of what got nascar started and the popularity it gained. Hope everyone out there is doing good and staying safe 👍🇺🇸

Yeah I didn't have a doubt me and muscle friends gotta kick out of that,but I would have ever thought that it was Benny Parsons on the driving end....that's the most startling part but I could see a crew chief being pissed off that the car was torn up they put a lot of time into getting those car ready for one race 20 hours days and stuff...but wonder what BP did to get no pit stop...tore the car up may be and they were down to their last car and parts...never know thanks....my friends favorite part is every time he see me coming he say no no no ,no what race car drivers,don't want none don't need none....I say what the hell are u talking about....huh....the movie was real good I was just hoping there was a real Harry Hyde....the rest of the character s were a whole bunch of everyone I didn't see a lot of Tim so I had forgot the great Folgers car nut I remember him battling and beat Dale a few times,that much I remember,I almost died in a car accident in 1987....so I missed a little bit of life,well just forgot it...THANKS funny thing is the main character was really a double spin kinda Jeff Gordon but it was really Tim Richmond the movie did tribute both Jeff and Tim,but most of all Harry's charecter stole the show....I thought Cruise did a good job also.....but yeah my and I thought the ice cream part was priceless....me I hate seatbelts so whenever I'm stopping my car I start laughing when ever I undo my seat belt fast I start looking out the window to go beat Harry up....hah hah

Kellie Tim was beyond measure, I started following him when Old Millwalkie was his sponsor, but once he got into that Folgers car the rest was history.... I watch Days Of Thunder my friend Larry Shefts of blessed memory told me that was about Tim Richmond when it came out but it took me decades before I actually saw it.... 87 was one wild year, believe me !!
