@@liviomostosi7907 When I investigated at the time this video was made (and it's likely true today), in order to use OnShape for free, any project/design you make MUST be public. I'm okay with this in general, but I have just one thing I would like to model that I would not be willing to share with others, so I did not put a lot more effort into learning about OnShape. So, to be clear, "Private Documents" I think was the way their licensing described the ability to have/save projects that are not available publicly. If you need to keep any of your work private, they are asking a minimum of $1500 USD per year. I can't afford that, because I'm not a professional.

Not bad, not bad, for a web based CAD service. As you said, the google docs of CAD. And that's a pretty good summary. (a.k.a. not as potent as a standalone cad program, all the worries about IP property as its web based, if internet aint working you can't model, etc etc .... but of course it's quite free, easy to use). Guess i'm a tad spoiled by my degree (lots of solidwork ), but this as a free tool is good, no discussion :p
@HoffmanEngineering
@HoffmanEngineering 8 жыл бұрын
+JJ CC I'm the same way, Solidworks is pretty hard to beat. I'm sure the future will bring features such as a part library, sheet metal and other add-ins, and possible simulations (although I'm not sure how web-based simulations would function). I don't find that I use those solidworks features too often, so I think the sketch/extrusions/assemblies/drawings (which I forgot to mention in the video -_-) will work for a majority of my uses. Security is always a concern with cloud-based storage. I guess we'll see if any companies start to convert over. I'd also be curious to see what the differences are between the free/professional/enterprise agreements in terms of security concerns. Needless to say, I will be following the development of Onshape pretty closely, I think it has a lot of potential.
@jjcc8379

+Hoffman Engineering And also the "intelectual property / privacy" part of the cloud is important. What if its hacked? What if the company goes broke ? Who owns the rights of those cad parts? etc... About Solidworks , well, it's the reference. Although i don't use at all sheet metal i'm all up for extrusions, doing a part with profiles and guide curves ... and that's something that for most users (who need a free cad program) won't need. Hope you haven't forgotten about timelapses! or print designs! ( kidding, thanks for the video and reply)

I have been using Blender for few years. I will check out Onshape. I hope it has export formats OBJ, DXF, etc. Onshape looks very simple. Experimentally, I will try modelling objects first in Onshape and later export them in Blender.

Lots of these CAD programs seem to be OK if you know exactly what your models dimensions will be before hand. But when you go back to change a dimension, they really suck. FreeCAD is an example of this. Is this one any good for editing parts that were made someway down the line??
@HoffmanEngineering
@HoffmanEngineering 7 жыл бұрын
I must have missed this comment! As long as all your sketches are "fully defined", which means that you have dimensions and/or relations on all the pieces of the sketch, everything should update perfectly whenever you change any dimension. Thats the point of parametric CAD, you should be able to make changes at anytime. In Onshape (or solidworks), you can tell a sketch is fully defined if all the lines in the sketch are solid black. Blue lines mean it needs more information, either dimensions or relationships to other entities.

Isn't the 10 file limitation a bit... limiting? I'm trying to find a CAD program which can allow me to move away from Windows into Linux based design engineering.
@HoffmanEngineering
@HoffmanEngineering 8 жыл бұрын
+rock3tcat (ⵙⴰⵔⵓⵅ) Completely depends on what you are trying to do. All the CAD workI do are usually turned into STL files for 3D printing, which I put up on Thingiverse for free. So there is no reason not to have those designs be public. If you make designs for customers, you'd probably want those to remain private. But, you can always export your finished designs as a STEP or IGES files, and delete them from your Onshape account. If, for whatever reason, you need to make slight tweaks, you can always re-import those files back into Onshape. It won't retain file history or constraint relations, but would allow you to add new features and make modifications.
@HoffmanEngineering
@HoffmanEngineering 8 жыл бұрын
Welcome to the community! :D Onshape's assembly and mating features allow you to do some pretty awesome things, so you can define relationships and see how everything moves together. You can set limits to their range-of-motion, and they have some mate types, like pin-slot mates, which can be a pain to work with in other programs. However, there is no animation feature like you'd find in inventor, so you'd have to record and render everything manually.

How hard is it or is it possible to convert these Onshape CAD designs to G-code for CNC?
@HoffmanEngineering
@HoffmanEngineering 8 жыл бұрын
+Jose parker It is the same process as any other CAD program. You would design the parts, then export them in a file format your CAM program (like CamBam or FreeMill) can read (probably STEP or IGES, or turn them into 2D formats like dxf). Then you would generate the gcode however that program normally does it.
