Discover how the HOKA Speedgoat 5 compares to the HOKA Challenger 7 in terms of grip, cushioning and fit, so you can choose the best option for your trail running adventures.
While both shoes offer similar levels of cushioning and protection, there’s a distinct difference when it comes to grip. The Speedgoat 5 has a Vibram Megagrip Traction Lug outsole (while the Challenger 7 features HOKA’s own outsole rubber), meaning the Speedgoat performs much better on technical surfaces, looser rock, mud and steeper slopes.
The slightly softer and more forgiving feeling Challenger excels on harder ground, making it an ideal door-to-trail shoe for those doing a mixture of road and trail running.
If you’re big into trail running and interchanging between rolling terrain and remote areas of technical difficulty in your training, there’s definitely a place for both the Speedgoat and Challenger in your shoe rotation.

I am not much a fan of cutouts and "lightsole" bases for shoes, even if there is just one location where the foam is exposed, rather sooner than later a branch or gravel starts rubbing on it (the best case) or punches a hole in the foam. Speedgoat 5 is okay, Mafate 4 is already stretching it, the Challenger even more so. Really would wish they would make a more protective sole, their EVA material is one of the softer and less resilient ones, after all. P.S. excellent shoe reviews, just found you today.

That was a very informative comparison. Just got a pair of SG5's to replace my Nike Wildhorse 7's. I was torn between the SG5 and the Challenger 7 as if I'm being honest my running is mostly of the road to trail kind. However, as I absolutely hated the lack of traction on wet surfaces of the Nikes I thought I'd go for the grippiest shoe I can find this time, hence the Speedgoats. That said, after running on the SG5 and appreciating the grip I'm thinking I might not want to wear that great outsole down by using them on hard & dry surfaces like city and park running. Maybe owning both Hokas would be optimal, use the Challenger as a dry weather daily trainer/mixed use shoe and keep the SG5 for wet days and real mountain trails where you're going to find some moisture anyway. The similar feel between them should make the transition super easy.

Thanks for your comment. Alternating between the SG5 and the Challenger as you’ve suggested is a great idea and probably the optimal rotation. It’s hard to beat the SG5 grip on wet terrain. The Challenger deliver brilliant grip and comfort on dry/hard packed routes.

do you think we can use the challenger on a marathon road race?

That's a really interesting question, as there are a few things to consider. The Challenger are probably one of the best trail running shoe options for running a road marathon. That's because they're very cushioned and feel very comparable to road running shoes. If you're predominantly running off-road and don't need dedicated road running shoes, but want to run a one off road marathon, the Challenger could be a viable option. The main differences you'll experience in comparison to road models, such as the Clifton and Bondi, are a slightly firmer underfoot feel and less forgiving landings. This is mainly down to the stiffer outsole rubber on the Challenger. Our points of caution are that the Challenger lugs will wear down faster on road than they will on softer surfaces. Additionally, there's always a risk involved when using shoes for something that's not their intended purpose. Most runners will find road running shoes the most comfortable option for a marathon. From experience, the later stages of a marathon place a lot of demands on your biomechanics. A lot of road running shoes feature specific technologies that help you overcome this challenge. We hope that helps answer your question.

I love the SG5 but the tongue is complete shi*. After slipping my foot into the shoe and giving the tongue a pull the position it correctly it’s come apart. I’ve since glued it and it held for a little but came apart on my last trail marathon. It’s seriously a major defect. Tongue should be one piece and be able to hand a gentle pull to position. So frustrating, I love the shoe so much other that that…
