Holding the Violin Without a Shoulder-Rest

In this video, I demonstrate how I hold the violin without the help of a shoulder-rest. While holding a violin without use of a shoulder-rest may not be for everyone, it allows those who can get used to it a sense of extra freedom while holding the violin. In my case it helps me be more expressive and relaxed. In my early studies I was using a shoulder-rest but felt locked into one position which actually limited my movement enough to hold me back. When I got rid of the shoulder-rest and learned to relax without it I felt free. Remember not to lift your left shoulder and relax completely.

Thank you for the tip - especially placing a rubber pad under the violin; since I cannot (yet) reliably clamp the violin between my chin and collarbone, and thusly tend to hold it up with my left thump, putting a thick scarf underneath already helped so that the end of the violin could rest on my neck by itself in a suitable height, putting most of its weight there, and so that already in a natural position my chin can clamp it down - leaving more freedom for my left thump. Sometimes, it's the simple things - thanks for providing the hint! \m/

I have sloping shoulders and a rather long neck. I have lots of trouble holding a violin. I need to set the violin shoulder rest high and also raise the chin rest as high as possible. I even had trouble finding a high enough chin rest and extending one higher is still in a project. The only way I could hold the violin without the shoulder rest is by deligating the entire hold function to my left hand thumb and pointer fingers, that is - lightly squeezing the violin neck.

Ironically, I've got that BonMusica shoulder rest. I don't remember why but when I was initially choosing between BM and Wolf I for some reason preferred Wolf - I don't remember why! Maybe I need to pull out BM and try it again. Actually I now more and more realise that the shoulder rest hight for me not as important as the proper super-high chin rest. With a high shoulder rest violin does sit in the air, not contacting the collar bone - which is important as I understnad? I think I need to raise my chin rest high enough so it compensates for the large gap I have betweet my collar bone and the chin?

This is the GCV Kreisler Replica. GCV is Chinese and has two VSA silver medals for tone, and numerous international awards and certificates. The soloist is also Chinese. The non-Chinese options are quite a bit more expensive if you are looking for this kind of quality.

This is the case for many. This particular video is geared towards those who have the possibility and the right build.
@axlcrush
@axlcrush 3 жыл бұрын
Yup, without the right build, the violin will rotate towards the chest and downward, pivoting at the chin. Some end up using the base of 2nd finger to stop this, but it restricts the left hand and vibrato. Right build means the person has to have a sufficiently flat and meaty shoulder (non protruding collar bone) to go against the back of the violin, so that the friction prevents this rotation.

I have been struggling a lot. I'm skinny and the wooden edges hurt, so my violin Anna is wearing black panties (I personally never liked) which makes her softer. When I started on violin in May, I took off the chin rest (I'm left-handed) and mostly it worked. But on some days my skin seems to be more slippery. Today I put a piece of cloth under her panties and created a hill. This is exactly what I needed! I can move the cloth under the panties and shape it so it feels exactly right at my cheek. You're right, what I need is a pillow for my check, rather than a chin rest. This solution comes in handy, for on Saturday, 29th I will have to play in an open stage project of our club. As I feel, the most difficult thing in playing the violin, is the fact, that the 2 strings next to the one I want to caress are closer than it's comfortable for a beginner. And in order to manage this accuracy, I must find a way to keep the instrument in position safely.

Great. As long as you can hold it without tensing up and squeezing, you'll be better off. Just make sure that you don't need more fill. Some people with long necks have issues when not using a shoulder rest.
@1stfiddlerman
@1stfiddlerman 11 жыл бұрын
There are a few that do it but I don't know of any professional violinist who doesn't use a chin-rest. Theoretically I can see it working if you can hold it while staying very relaxed. I would recommend getting a comfortable chinrest to keep your jaw, chin, off the top of the violin though. Doesn't have to be a big one.

Your fingers from the last joint to the nail can rise slightly above the joint . Yehudi Menuhin last finger joint does as well Carlo Curely Organist was the same . I contend that ability to flex the fingertip inclined from the final joint creates professionally quality instrumentalists

Thanks. 21 good years with a Bon Musica and it started hurting April 2023. I could be chin pinching the violin, but not having the SR has provided relief. I had trouble shifting from 3rd to 1st. Probably not enough practice. I made a sling that starts at my right shoulder, passes across my back and ties to the violin after passing over my left shoulder.
@1stfiddlerman
@1stfiddlerman Жыл бұрын
Interesting. Would love to see that. As for not using a SR, make sure that you have a good chinrest. Without one, you might feel the need to squeeze thereby lifting the shoulder. You want to avoid that. As for shifting down, sometimes, instead of squeezing I'll just lift the head of the violin just a bit higher and the violin stays put. :) A Strad-pad might help with the connection. fiddlershop.com/products/sattler-strad-pad Cheers!!!

I love the shoulder rest (an Everest), but there are so many videos on KZfaq advocating not using one. I almost feel that the message is that one should not use a shoulder rest. All I know is that it was a struggle for me to concentrate on the other aspects of playing the violin before I got the shoulder rest, because the violin hurt my shoulder, and I could never find a non-painful way to hold it. So, for me, the shoulder rest is more freeing.
@1stfiddlerman
@1stfiddlerman 2 жыл бұрын
I think there is a greater risk of having issues if you stop using the shoulder rest when it is helping you. This video, and advice is intended for those who feel that the shoulder-rest is a hinder. If you don't need added space between the instrument and your body, then you shouldn't use one. If however, you are more comfortable with a shoulder-rest, use it. Remember that everyone is not built the same way. 😁

Sometimes a simple solution like a big car washing sponge with a rubber band works best. I like the freedom of not having a shoulder rest. The main reason for not using something like the sponge is that the back vibrations can be dampened making the instrument softer. One solution that works for a lot of people who can't find the perfect solution is the Bon Musica shoulder rest. It has so much flexibility. Has an end that can hook over your shoulder. Regardless of your solution, focus enough on relaxing while holding and not squeezing. 😁

I was using a lighter weight yamaha before so i feel the difference. My arms are tensing i think because i it a but heavier. It weighs in without the shoulder rest at 580grams almost 590! @1stfiddlerman

With a long neck you need a tall chin-rest or a shoulder-rest. Something like this: fiddlershop.com/products/extra-tall-chinrest-teka-model Have the weight of the instrument rest on your collarbone/shoulder without squeezing, but merely resting your jaw on the chinrest to keep it from slipping. support the top part of the instrument with your left hand. Shouldn't be that much if you are balancing the instrument. Obviously a lighter violin would be better for you. Good luck!!!

I don’t know if I will get a reply or not but what’s wrong in trying to seek help. Well, from what I saw in few videos, I realised I learnt violin a lot in wrong way. My hand movement is restricted to the size of my hand. Instead of resting it on my shoulder, violin rests on my hand entirely. I asked about this but my teacher said it’s totally normal and he also does this. Strangely he plays really good but his hand is restricted too. What should I do? I cant seem to progress much and it’s really frustrating to limit what I can learn but can’t. Edit- I tried to copy it but my collar bone hurts and chin too. I cant keep it steady when playing for more than 2 strings.

Osho, resting the violin in your left hand is right and correct. Your teacher is right. However, it's more of a balance thing. There isn't much that rests in your hand since most of the weight is at your shoulder/collarbone/chest area. You barely have anything resting in your left hand. When you shift down you should be able to hold the violin enough with your jaw that the instrument doesn't get pulled off of your chest. Hope that helps. As for more help, please join my forum at fiddlerman.com/forum. It's all free of course. :)

Try lifting the neck of the violin as you downshift. Then you are actually moving the hand UPhill for a DOWNshift. Sounds counter intuitive, but it works. Be sure not to raise the shoulder as you lift the neck slightly with hand and arm. There's no way you will lose the violin this way, gravity will keep it on your collarbone.

I think it should be called a jaw rest.

Yes sir. My neck aches with chin rest on. I searched through internet if it is okay, it is. My neck feels so relieved playing the violin without it.

Shoulder rests are not for everyone. Many great soloists did not use shoulder rests. Everyone is different depending on their necks, jaws, collars, shoulders.... etc.

This week I try to get rid of my shoulder rest (it makes my neck PAIN), and no problem with vibrato and upward shifting. However, I found that I need to tense up my shoulder muscle to support the violin when I'm shifting down (violin doesn't contact with shoulder otherwise), is it regular? Sorry for the dumb question, I'm bit of self-learned. Thanks for reply if there is any :).

don't tense up but put the violin higher with your left hand when shifting back and your thumb must first be ready to move backward before you shift back to the first position

+陳品儒(Patricius) I feel like there should be a connection, especially when shifting down but not much. Absolutely no tension. Sometimes it's a question of having the wrong equipment for your body type. Another thing is the shift speed consideration. Imagine removing a table cloth full of plates and such from a table using speed. If you move fast enough the objects won't move much. If you shift fast enough without friction, you should experience a similar effect. Also, not holding the violin too low helps. Gravity. :)
