Janey, my uncle who lived in Southern CA, had beautiful peonies every year (he grew up in zone 5a and loved peonies). In order to get his peonies to bloom, he froze thick blocks of ice in cake pans, to place on the peony plants. He did that every 3-4 days and covered the ice with small Styrofoam coolers (like the ones from Omaha Steaks) to keep the ice from melting so fast and keep the plants cold longer. In later years, he used Refreezeable cooler icepacks (2 per plant so one could be in his freezer, while the other one was on the plant). He would swap out the icepacks but leave the coolers covering the plants the entire chill time, to protect the crown of the peony from heat. He used bricks to keep the coolers from blowing away. @@payton8613 You're welcome. One thing I forgot to mention if you are using the freezer ice packs and covering it with a cooler, you may need to water the peony plant during that chill time.

This is interesting and something that might make me consider trying peonies again! Just to clarify, were the coolers placed with the opening upside down?

@@dawnmitchell11 Yes, the coolers should be placed upside down over the peony crowns. I live in zone 5a, (where my uncle was born and raised) so peonies in this area don't need any special treatment.

I’m near you also zone 9b:). I planted bare root two years ago, in a protected spot, and did ice. I got 2 blooms last year, super excited for year three! Plus I planted a few mature ones that same year and they all came back and bloomed, so that was heartening! Good luck:)

P. Allen Smith says they like a neutral pH soil, possibly a tiny bit acidic 6.5-7pH is the sweet spot. He also said 1/2 an inch max. Plus remove seed pods when they start to die out.

I am in zone 9a - 9b in the South Island of New Zealand. I have recently found out that they don’t like being buried too deep, so that’s quite good to know as that is the biggest reason for no flowers. I push the boundaries when it comes to planting and I will try growing something that people will tell me won’t grow in my region. I love proving them wrong, lol! I have some beautiful peonies and have just recently grown Kelways glorious, a beautiful white double peonie.

Be careful when you pull on the peonies they don't usually fall off like daylillies. You might uproot it. I live in 6a and have always had them. They are tough little buggers and sheers are mostly needed. Lol

Janey, I'm wondering if 1 ice pour per week is enough? If 3 weeks total of cold temps are required, then 21 days are needed. At least. A thermometer might help to take their temps😸 at intervals after pouring ice to see how long the roots stay cold? I hope this works for you, Peonies are truly beautiful.🤞

Hi. You need to build a cage around each one and fill it with ice..even better make an insulated box with wood..fill it with ice and hopefully last a few days...good luck...saddly just throwing ice cubes at them won't work...

Itoh peonies are a hybrid that will grow and bloom in our zones. I’m in 10a and they bloom without all that work!!

I live in zone 9 and I find I don’t need to use ice. Mine bloom every year. Peony need temp between 32- 40 degrees. If you get plenty of nights in this range, you’ll be good.

Best of luck! Even in my cooler zone, peonies just take a few years to mature. My peony this past year had green leaves well past the expected time for them to die back, so your weather hopefully won't be as tough on your mid-season bloomers as you think. Fingers crossed!

Hi Deb, I'm in Chico too, southwest side, near the orchards and river. . Do you ice your peonies? How much sun do you give yours.What varieties do well for you? I'm afraid I planted mine in the wrong place, thinking it needed sun all day, but Janey says it won't like our baking hot afternoon heat.

I had no idea they need the cold, and yes, I'd be going to the trouble too, they are so worth it. I live in my mom's home I inherited, she was an avid gardener, her peonies are still blooming from the 80's...early to mid...she got the place in '82. I wish they'd bloom all season.

I live Canada and yes we all get the chill time all across our nation and yes it makes growing the garden easy however there are times that I become jealous of your growing season and warm weather. We all love what we grow and learn in gardening and we all love where we live but there are times when one place has weather or temperatures that we all need. Enjoy and have a wonderful day.

I love your dedication Janey... I too would do something like this, except being in Southern California you've got a better chance of this working than I do. I too LOVE peony's! When you mentioned putting ice on your plants I imagined you using big bags of ice per plant. Only good vibes as I think/say... for the best chance of this to work, I think I'd try placing frozen ice packs/or way more ice on the plants in the evening when temps will be cooler for a longer period of time, as opposed to the day. I would also do it more frequently than once a week, so they really get the chill they need. I am cheering you on from afar and sending best wishes for this to work! Happy gardening Janey!!

Janey, do you mean Sarah Bernhardt rather than “Sandra”? If so, we have good luck with that cultivar as well as Festiva Maxima in our warm Georgia climate. Hope you do well with all of yours. We actually plant ours with the nodes ABOVE the soil to allow them to get the cold they need. They get better and better each year.

I have peonies! I planted them 11 years ago and they come back every year, however, I was expecting to be able to divide them and have lots of plants already…not so. Lots of people in my area say they can’t get them to come back, so I contented myself with their survival. I planted them in the middle of three walls. They get cold deep shade all winter. Maybe that’s why they’re still alive?😆 I was planning on moving them this month to a sunnier spot, but maybe I shouldn’t…😳 SC zone 8a

Hi Janey, thank you for the peonies update 😊. I had messaged you about them a few weeks ago. I planted 9 tubers in 15 gal grow pots last weekend. I live in Las Vegas, Nevada zone 8b. I have my fingers crossed that the will grow. I have 4 own root roses, 2 limelight hydrangeas, 1 pinky winky hydrangeas tree that did ok ( they struggled a bit and needed more water)in the hottest part of the summer so we will see how the peonies do

I agree. The ice won’t last long, especially with the rain. I think more will need to be added during the week. At this point, it’s all an experiment.

Hi Janey, hope your peonies come through for you this year. Don't you mean "Sarah Bernhardt" instead of "Sandra?" ;) I successfully grew beautiful peonies several years ago here in Texas where I had many more trees and some shade and I did the ice over them back then like you are doing now. Then we moved and I have little shady areas in my garden now. I still planted peonies only I forgot and allowed our yard guys to plant them and they totally planted them too deep. They leafed out but of course, didn't bloom. I'm going to start over with more in another area on the north side of my garden and do "all the things" I did before and those that you shared. And hey, I still can't seem to find the sunset zone for my area here in the Dallas area. Are sunset zones only in California? I'll have to go back and watch your video again on that subject. Thanks again for this great series!

Yes, we have several regions here in Texas and have several periodicals and b books dedicated to our area. But from her previous video, I gathered all regions had a sunset zone assigned also. @@victoriaaustin2468 so you haven't found a Sunset book geared to your region? Wonder why?! I still use Sunset to refer to thou I don't live in CA anymore. In 1992 I moved to France, in a Paris suburb .. with Winters and Colder and rainy Summers than I was used to! I figured out that we're similar to a climate in Washington State. By max and min temps. I think most pros (growers, stores) go by the USDA zones. I hope your Peonies bloom like there's no tomorrow this coming Spring! xo Alysen

@@alcg3981 I haven't yet found the Sunset book for our area, but I will search more diligently after the holidays. I can imagine that you have exquisite florals in your area if your area in Paris is similar to Washington state. They have such gorgeous blooms with all that rain and cooler weather than here in Texas or California regions. We have friends who moved to Paris years ago and still haven't visited them. Hope to do that in 2023 and would love any recommendations for gardens to visit. I also want to research my great-grandfather who was born in 1832 Lamont, Haute-Vienne, Limousin,. Thank you so very much again. I also pray you have beautiful success with your gardening in Paris!

Hello, im from the philippines, I was asking for a question before I planted peonies for my beginning. Do peonies thrive in tropics or humid climate in containers? What if I planted peony tubers in containers from tropical climates? After flowering and die, should I put some ice cubes like store in a cool place in a room because i live in the tropical climate like philippines?

Curious if this same technique, with the ice, could be used to get a lilac to bloom in zone 8? I have seen a couple of varieties that are supposed to bloom even if there isn't much of a cold period. You've sparked my curiosity and hope with this video Janey! Thanks for posting! Going to give peonies another go here in Texas 8b also!

See if anyone in your area has a "Josee" or "Beach Party" lilac. Josee is supposed to be good to Zone 8, but I had two very young ones put out a couple of small flowers last week. I am just into Zone *_9b_* in Florida. As for "Snowy Beach Party" and "Rosie Beach Party," they are supposed to be good down to Zone 10. These are worth trying if the problem seems to be lack of chill hours. If the lilac used to bloom but stopped, you may have to try some aggressive pruning. There are some good videos out there on this issue.

I had found a Monrovia Blue Skies Lilac last spring, but decided against it ($50 🤯), I'm not quite ready to put something like that in, as I'm wanting to regrade my front and backyard and do some redesign of garden bed locations first. That one is hardy to zone 8 which doesn't tell you it's tolerance for heat, but it's an indicator that it might struggle for me. Texas sun is intense, as I'm sure you know being in Florida. That variety says it's supposed to perform better than others in mild winters. The reading I have done says that typically when you get above zone 8, they tend not to bloom much due to not enough cool days at 45* and under. Same issue as peonies, aside from them frying in our sun. I will look around and ask if any nurseries here are familiar with the varieties you mentioned! I'm also in alkaline soil, which they like, so I figured that would hopefully help.

@@dawnmitchell11 I have had a few "Beach Party" lilacs (started four-inches tall) on my balcony porch all year. The heat did not bother them - they are very happy there, in larger grow bags. (Although I expect I will have to size up the bags at some point this year.) I gave a few to friends who've planted in full sun with no problems. I got mine on sale at about $25 each (including shipping). The advantage of "Beach Party" is they manage to bloom with very little chill hours. I did have to buy them on-line, as my local nurseries do not stock them - yet. Given lilacs can live to be over a century old, I figure that would be a bit under 25 cents a year. I would gladly pay that for lilacs that will bloom. (Plus, I get to drive my neighbors a little crazy. 🤪)
