The European kingdom of Holland, known also as the Netherlands, was until relatively recently a powerful trading nation that possessed many colonies.Most of this land of tulips, windmills and canals is located below sea level and in the 17th century was the most prosperous country in Europe. It features hundreds of blossoming show gardens that are admired by millions of visitors from all over the world. In the 16th century life on the ocean wave brought glorious times for the city of Edam that is now world famous for its cheese of the same name. More than thirty shipyards once prospered in the city and the fleet of legendary Dutch hero, Michiel De Ruyter, was built there. Mijmegen lies proudly on the banks of the River Waal. The origins of Holland’s oldest city are to be found in the Roman settlement of Noviomagum. The triangular market square of this university and Hanseatic town is dominated by the Waag House, a red-bricked building of Renaissance design. The Molens Van Kinderdijk is a fascinating landscape of windmills and a Unesco World Heritage Sight. Its nineteen windmills are world famous and of course typical of Holland. The fascination of old cities, dreamy fairytale-like villages, paintings by some of the world’s greatest artists, bicycles and windmill: Holland is very much a land of the familiar and also the exotic.

I was born there - in Sneek, Friesland (not shown in your video) - but my parents immigrated to Canada in 1955. We visited the Netherlands twice with my parents in 1961 and 1972, and with my wife in 1986. Beautiful little country!

The NL is not quiet. At night you can see NL, B, D (a part of it till Dortmund) from a satellite (ligh pollution). You always see, hear or smell someone. You hear cars everywhere. I now live in a Hungarian village.

I've really appreciated these incredibly detailed videos as I go back and study geography one country at a time!* As an American, I do have one correction on this one, though: The Pilgrims, who departed from Leiden to settle on the Atlantic coast of what is now the USA, were not the first white settlers of North America; Plymouth Colony was only the first permanent white settlement. *If you're still making these videos, I strongly suggest that you start showing maps in them so we can tell where you are in the country or region you're showing.

The 4 big cities of the Netherlands are: Amsterdam (Noord-Holland). Rotterdam (Zuid-Holland, Den Haag (Zuid-Holland) and Utrecht (which is in the centre of the Netherlands, in the province of UTRECHT).

Note: people who live in the provinces of North- and South-Holland can say "I am from Holland", cuz it's only referring to the both parts of THE NETHERLANDS!! So other people from the rest of this beautiful free country they should say they are from THE NETHERLANDS.

Actually in English Holland can mean the whole country. In fact, many language don't use the Netherlands form, they only use the Holland form to refer to the while country. Chinese and Finnish are examples.

Die provinciegrenzen zijn een beetje uit de tijd. Misschien moet Nederland anders ingedeeld worden. Ik heb me er in Nederland niet zo mee bezig gehouden. Het land waar ik nu woon noemt Nederland 'Hollandiá. Ik heb wel een s uitgelegd dat dat niet klopt. Én Holland vagyok moet ik zeggen om aan te geven dat ik Nederlander ben.

The first settlers in the USA (Northern America) were not the Pilgrim Fathers , as usually it is said, but the Spanish in St. Agustina, Florida in 1565, around 55 years before. It is high time to correct this extended mistake.

I agree with the observations of a lot of people here. Some of my observations are probably repeated elsewhere: 1. Gauda should be spelled as Gouda 2 De Molens van de Kinderdijk should be De Kinderdijk, the mills are not part of the name. 3. The Netherlands has provinces, not states 4. I believe that the Afsluitdijk was called something else. 5. No attempt was made to at least approach the pronunciations of Dutch names such as Nijmegen which was pronounced as Nimugen (English sounds) 6. De Zaansche Schaans should be Zaanse Schans. 7. Indeed The Hague, Rotterdam, Scheveningen, Limburg Noord Brabant etc did not rate a mentioning. 8. Do not make the mistake of calling this country Holland. North Holland and South Holland (Noordholland en Zuidholland) are the two western provinces. When referring to the country itself, rather than the two western provinces (ignoring Zeeland), it should be Nederland. Ah well, it may be a small country but it is indeed rich in history

Two corrections : It is Gouda not Gauda and the Pilgrimfathers didn't leave from Leiden but from Rotterdam Delfshaven to be , indeed, the first new white residents to reach America !!!!!!!! Greetings from a chauvinistic Rotterdammer, Netherlands ( NOT Holland : these are a part of the Netherlands ( South Holland and North Holland are two Provinces of NL ) When will people ever learn although the name "Holland" is magic abroad...Rudy

Holland is not the Netherlands. They're two provinces, North and South Holland. That's like calling, North and South Dakota, the USA!!! Or instead of saying USA, you say: Dakota.

No way, The Netherlands consists op 12 provinces and Noord Holland is just one of them. In size it ranks nr. 6. It is the province with 2nd most number of population. just google it.
