What a fantastic video, thanks for making it, Joe! I prefer speed density exactly for that trust point that you made. I like knowing exactly what I'm telling the injector to do, not the end result of a calculation.

Awesome video as usual Joe👍 Here's my 'experience' (what/how I learned). I've been tuning EFI on bikes for 20+ years and since the only "aftermarket fuel tuning boxes" have all been Alfa-N that's what I learned (first). So since I was used to tuning Alfa-N (and Lb/Hr directly relates to HP) I continued using Alfa-N (on the NA engines) and then Speed Density on Turbos. I was actually very surprised how close my first stand alone fuel table "builds" were (both NA and Boost) but I need to add, that was 100% because I also have several years of dyno experience = thousands dyno runs/data to help me estimate the fuel flow for TPS vs RPM and MAP vs RPM on the Turbos. And as some might guess? the fuel graph/curves end up looking a lot like the HP curve on the dyno graphs. With that said, the first time I tuned with VE I was like, wow this is simple! (because as you said) the numbers in the VE table don't vary much (compared to Lb/Hr)...

Joe, dude, great fucking explanation. This cleared up so many things for me, and made some great connections in my brains. Seriously though, thank you for the effort and the time you’ve invested to share this info. My only question is how would you approach VE for nitrous, is there anything special to consider, or is that something that is pretty much handled by the nitrous controller in the software? Thanks again man, please keep them coming!

What kinda of drive data log should I take to get the best info that I could use to determine what I need to adjust ? What can be determined from a datalog I'm concerned about the timing at times I have set it correctly and adjusted the inductive delay its pretty much spot on just not sure exactly what the numbers should be but I'm sure it will effect the o2 results if not correct

I think the cool thing about VE is that your throttle body, intake geometry, any forced induction, etc is agnostic from the standpoint of MAPxRpm. All those things only manipulate MAP (and MAT) so you don’t need to control for them.

I was watching the map transition from speed density to VE and decided to try that with a few global files. It worked well with a few of the Holley files, but when I tried it with mine, it turns it red and it’s all flat when viewing as a graph.

Great easy to understand video. Shit in = shit out... if only more people understood that. Self learning though, fixes all (strong sarcasm). I understand a lot people dont want to know and dont care about all the calculations an ecu is doing, they just want their car to run so they can go beat on it. And that is something the Terminator offers the masses for an incredibly low price, and really does do a heck of a lot. A person can literally enter every engine detail wrong, and it will still swing it enough to run and drive. Hard to ask for more than that for $1k. I just wish they offered the ability to measure A/F in lambda, or F/A in phi.

Great video with explanation of volumetric efficiency vs speed density for Holley ecu’s. Having only tuned a handful of N/A Ls combos, with factory gm pcm’s, the explanation helps. Hptuners will call volumetric efficiency (2 bar, 3bar) speed density which can be confusing for beginners. As you know tuning factory gm pcm’s can be overly complicated, I hope to integrate a terminator x with my gen 3 ls truck one day

Joe great video, and some great pointers one comment, VE can go north of 100% because of what you mentioned but really it’s also an issue with the VE calculation itself as the clearance volume is not included in the displaced volume of the engine which is used to calculate VE. So when you got to 100% VE you are refilling the displaced volume but not also the clearance volume (trapped EGR) when you go north of 100% VE you are completely/more fully scavenging the engine cylinder contents.
@jamesparkerfpv435

VE uses an inferred map value for egr by cross referencing barometric pressure sensor data, delta pressure feedback, and the change in mass air flow data as the engine consumes exhaust gas. cheers.

Joe, thank you so much for your videos. I watched a few hours worth when I was stuck at the house with COVID recently lol. Now my TT LS 69 Camaro with Holley Dominator runs and drives better than ever. One question: I recently switched to VE from Speed Density. I run E85 and always kept it on the GASOLINE scale because it's what I'm used to looking at, plus it never made a difference with SD. This throws my VE table up into the 130-140 range at WOT. It rides around 68 at idle. The math tells me this is what's to be expected as it's doing calculations for gasoline, but actually having to spray much more fuel to meet AFR goals. If you multiply my VE numbers by 0.67 (e85 to gas conversion), you get VE values that fall in line with what I'm seeing in your video. Is my thinking correct?
@JoeSimpsonAtTempest
@JoeSimpsonAtTempest 2 жыл бұрын
Yup ve numbers will be higher with ethanol. If you want the table values to be normal just use a custom table to add the extra fuel for the ethanol. Outcome will be exactly the same

In VE mode does the AFR offset vs coolant temp change the fuel calculations even when in open loop mode? Or it ignored in open loop mode totally?

It only changes the closed loop target. It does not add or subtract any fuel (like you would think it would in ve mode)
