Great video and explanation of your school! Honestly, amazing explanation of your school; the answering of common faq is a great idea. I studied karate, kung fu and (my fav) Taekwondo when I was younger and have dabbled in Jiu Jitsu in recent years. I’m wondering, why did everyone have a black belt in some portions of the video? From my experience, belt leveling is decided by 2 things for the most part: time spent, or skill level. Then some dishonorable, trash schools will take money for belts. I don’t even count that. I find both methods of belt progression to have their merits but always favored skill based progression as I found it to honor the art over the individual; due to it not dishonoring an art by having a highly ranked practitioner without the skills to back it. (Unless the time based school won’t pass you solely based on time) I find it should be a mix of 70/30, skill vs time but most go strictly one way for the most part. I’m a stickler for acknowledgment and rewarding those who make an effort but I’m also very opposed to not pointing out flaws and allowing an art or anything/anyone to be dishonored. (Not saying yal did that by any means).

Where did the founder learn subak? From a book. Where did the founder learn the Pyung ahn forms? from a book Where did the founder learn taekkyon? From informally watching a stranger in a park... Where did the founder learn kung fu? Only 3 years of basic 12 road Tan Tuy. Jie Quan(formerly Shaolin Quan) and a incomplete section of Yang style Taijiquan in Manchuria sparingly after work for only 3 years of what seems like a typical first level Long Fist curriculum of Tan Tuy and a intermediate long fist form Shaolin Quan renamed Jie Quan. I studied jhoon rhee tkd in the 60's and 70's but dropped out to go to seminary and follow a calling into ministry. I've always retained an interest in martial Arts and now at 67 would like to participate once again. But, I've found that tkd has changed. Now more of a sport than a martial art. The tkd schools I've visited let me know that their focus was on training Olympic style competitors, in other words, there's not really a place for me. So I'm looking for something more similar to the jhoon rhee style I learned 35 years ago. I may look for a local soo bhak do school. Thanks for your response!

Fun Fact: According to Korean records SooBakh or Subak is a Chinese military system imported to Korea. As is described in the Mooyidobotongji states it is of Chinese origin. Shoubo as its called in China is still widely practiced and is considered a Chinese Wrestling system with strikes. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o5yJZNqUv8vThoE.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fpyIesaVqLuxZoE.html Also the form GM Hwang Kee recreated from the Moojidobotongji is General Qi Qiguangs 32 stances boxing form that never died out and is widely practiced in northern systems, so Hwasun hyung should of looked like this and is actually quite similar if you remove the karate influence Gm Hwang Kee's students put onto the forms. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bNyXeKt9uMuWo6M.html Compared the Ji Xiao Xin Shu www.google.com/search?q=Ji+xiao+xin+shu+kung+fu&client=firefox-b-1-ab&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjEnKT68undAhUDGTQIHXh9AVsQ_AUIDigB&biw=1366&bih=654 Withthe Muyedobotongji forms- same techniques and form names www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-ab&biw=1366&bih=654&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=E4S0W8SLF8Wr0PEP6aWb0AU&q=Muye+Dobo+Tongjikwonbup&oq=Muye+Dobo+Tongjikwonbup&gs_l=img.3...1482.2814..3088...0.0..0.298.1705.0j1j6......1....1..gws-wiz-img.an1u5E5En7Q I wish a lot of Korean martial arts nationalism would die out already and stop with the revisionist history of claiming things that are not korean as revised as korean, the "URI-ginal" concept in korea is really turning into something a kin to the "Afrocentric" movement...

I tried teaching at a public park and we were kicked out by the sheriffs, we had masks... and social distancing... and we were Outdoors!! that was the last straw, so we left. I'm a bit confused, the video is a commercial for the dojo, but the title states it is no longer open, why the video if the school is closed? I did like the clear distinction and policy about actual fighters in the dojo. Two things that do not mix well are fighters at a dojo. Fighters should be in gyms or training area's not dojos. Fighters are difficult to deal with and collect dues from, and they scare off martial arts students and their parents.

@@drummtracks sounds great. I should keep my view about that planedemic to myself. I thought all that scare crap ended already, you must be from a blue state. We had to lock our doors, but everyone knew the special knock to come in and help "clean" the dojo. I don't have many students, anyway, really couldn't pay the bills or keep it open if it were not for the gym owner. His kindness keeps the dojo going. Hope that you and your dojo get going again. My life is training, and it is just so much easier having an actual dojo to go to. I know about fighters, heck I was/am one of them. I know how difficult they can be. We avoid the "fighters" as well, even I don't want them hanging at the dojo, and I was a pro fighter. When I hung up my gloves and walked out of the cage I focused on more martial arts, martial arts and I think with a background in both worlds I have something a lot of the just martial artists or just fighters do not have.

Imagine no contact sparring. You are supposed to be hit and hit in martial arts. Because what happens if you don't get hit ever, the result would be someone who flinches in a real fight or you won't be able to stay up to fight after getting hit a couple of times in a real fight.

Some people will agree with you, but most do not. I know this from running this School for over 30 years...90% of people want to get fit, and learn Self Defense, they do not particularly want to "Fight" or get hit. Those are the students that have kept this place successful for all that time. The fighters will go somewhere else. There are so many other ways I employ to teach how not to "Flinch" and how to deal with the pain or fear of getting hit.

I just don't get the 'no fighters please', and the whole of the no contact element. It's watering the arts down to levels of ineffectiveness, and nothing more than a kid's hobby. Martial Arts were created for a reason - to defend against aggressors - martial = war - the art of war. Why destroy the arts to simply commercialise it? Teach the techniques the way they're meant to be taught, and learn in an environment so that the students know how to effectively use them. Impact and pressure training are essential. You can't learn tennis simply by hitting a ball against a wall.
@Masterofeverythinish
@Masterofeverythinish 4 жыл бұрын
He did say there was sparring in it though, and in the video, he stated that the reason why they're more than just fighters is that they have a code that they abide by. They keep the sparring controlled for safety purposes I presume, just like how most sparring is controlled in boxing, Muay Thai, and MMA gyms. He doesn't want "fighters." in there who just want to fight, he wants people to have a moral code because without the moral code they would just be fighters in his view and not martial artists.

I understand your point, when I started way back in the early 80's, I got my ass handed to me in my first class by someone half my size...I liked it, and I stayed and learned in a hostile environment... Most students quit, the school had about 20 tough, mean, and aggressive fighters...It could not keep it's doors open. I love it, but what I like has nothing to do with what most of society likes or what it takes to run a business... I was also noticing the kinds of students that were being cultivated...I did not like what I saw, borderline mean, bullies, our Art is about Bully Defense not creating bullies.

Training to fight at a competition, in a ring, in an octagon or a mat is not the same thing as self defense. The first step of self defense is always to try and extricate oneself from a violent situation, try to de-escalate the situation, to diffuse the violence.
