Hollywood's First Murder Mystery Story Location Tour- Part Three
EDIT: I don't read from a script when I do these tours. I accidentally mentioned the 405 freeway in this video. I meant to call it the "old San Diego Freeway" which now of course is where the 405 is. Since we still refer to the 405 as the San Diego Freeway I accidentally called it by its number.
Join me on a documentary style Story Location Tour of Hollywood’s first murder mystery. In PART THREE we'll visit the locations that pertain to one of the biggest scandals in Hollywood history. In conclusion we'll learn more about William Desmond Taylor, Mary Miles Minter, Charlotte Shelby, Margaret Shelby, Margaret Gibson, Patricia Palmer, Asa Keyes, Buron Fitts, Sgt. Ed King, and will visit Alta Dena, Pasadena, Hollywood, Beachwood Canyon, and Santa Monica.
Dive into the murky depths of Hollywood's past with our latest video uncovering the chilling tale of the industry's inaugural murder mystery. Join us as we peel back the layers of intrigue, betrayal, and deception that shrouded this historic event.
With meticulous research and expert analysis, we piece together the puzzle of Hollywood's dark past, shedding light on a forgotten chapter that continues to fascinate to this day. Don't miss out on this compelling journey into the heart of intrigue and suspense.

There is a good reason why architecture is lost. It looks hideous when the paint fades, the wood starts to rot and the roof falls in. Then it rains.

Why do you think it's Mary's mother. It's very unlikely a female would do this. The creator of the documentary is merely reporting what the press concocted, and the press made up incredibly fantastical stories back in those days before defamation lawsuits became all the rage. It was about making money. I bet you believe anything you're told. It's most likely a same sex love affair gun awry by a hired gunman. So much for critical thinking. What is most concerning is people like yourself not only believe anything the media say, but will call for mob justice. These poor women's lives were ruined. Too bad their estates can't bring on lawsuits.

Reading Kirkpatrick's "A Cast of Killers" years ago was my introduction to the William Desmond Taylor story. It became my "travel" book and I'd haul it along anytime I had a lengthy flight. I realise Taylorology has disputed some of King Vidor's account but it's still fascinating. Your three-part investigation is brilliantly done and I so appreciate all the time you spent. I've been an avid fan of silent comedy my whole life and have a deep fondness for Chaplin, Mabel Normand, Edna Purviance, Sennett etc. and loved seeing current images of those homes, streets and sadly only parking lots where so much happened. I visited Niles several years ago and could feel the presence of Charlie and Edna there. For some reason Mabel and Edna always make me a bit sad. Such beauty and so much comedy when their personal lives were sometimes tragic. I'm glad to discover your KZfaq channel, Justin. I hope to watch many of your videos I've missed. Keep them coming! Congratulations!

Loved this! I tare followed this for some time But did not know of Patricia Palmer. Yes the son should have come forward way before the late 90's. So good of Mary Pickford to be so kind to Mabel's Mother Do you remember the tr commercial of either Dunkin Donuts or MacDonalds that featured the girl who looked like Mabel Normand? At the time everyone said it was an uncanny resemblance to her. I want to say early 90's or so.. You did an amazing job on this one! My guess it was M.M.M., in a frantic episode. Her mother must have been a piece of work to live with sadly.

This series was so well done. Great job. It’s like The old Mysteries and Scandals show, but good. When I was pregnant with my third child in 2019 I had a horrible high risk pregnancy & I used to read and watch old Hollywood content a lot for escapism. I didn’t want to find out the sex of my baby until birth and when she was born I looked at her and said Harlow. I had no idea at the time, but later discovered, she and Jean Harlow have the same birthday!

Hi Justin, I Just watched your coverage of the William Desmond Taylor murder and was very impressed. This case has always interested me and I have never seen the case covered so thoroughly in video! Visiting all the locations really brought this 100 year case to life. Your 3 part series is put together so well that I'm sure that it's testament to how much time and effort went into its writing and producing it. I also want to thank you for mentioning Marble Normand. I too believe that she is a forgotten pioneer of the film industry. Finally, I really think that Margaret Gibson's had something to do with the murder. She had a connection with the national Blackmail ring which means she had the means, and Taylor had something to hide (motive being blackmail). Margaret, aka Gibby, aka Pat, apparently knew Taylor before they both got to Hollywood, they both traveled throughout the west in the same stock vaudeville company. She also conveniently traveled out of country when the second inquiry was occurring. Anyway just want to add my thoughts. Congratulations on the great Series of videos. Thank you so much!

You said the man dancing with Mabel took off on the 405 freeway! That freeway didn't exist until the 1960's. Los Angeles had no freeways until the Pasadena Freeway was built in 1943. Before the 405, there was Sepulveda Blvd., which wound through Sepulveda Canyon, through a forest of ancient Sycamore trees. I think that's what you mean.

I have always heard about this case but usually as an aside to the Arbuckle case or as an example of why the industry was so keen on policing itself with the production code(s) and all. Seriously I've been a vintage Hollywood "buff" since I was a kid. This is the first time I have looked into the details. The gay aspects I never knew about, nor the whole "Sands" incidents. Also- management of public perception, that sort of celebrity hysteria that overtakes people and good, old-fashioned American "morality" up against progressive artists seems to be an ongoing theme in our society which is still alive and well over 100 years later! Thank you Justin - very well done and I'm glad there is someone else fascinated by all this Hollywood history. It's also enjoyable that you infuse it with some humor.

First of all, let me just say that you did a FANTASTIC job! Your narrative style is conversational and engaging, and really drew this viewer into the tale you related. The diagrams and old photographs you inserted into the current locations bring the viewer as close to the current day as they do the days of decades ago. It was as close to being there as is possible. Also, your /research was impressively thorough; you connected the relationships between the many players in this tangled web very well. I find it chilling that the "short, stocky man", who appears to have dressed in a manner in which to shield his(her?) identity, would look at the neighbor, smile, and then calmly close the front door. Brrrrr!!! Whether this person was the killer or not, he/she must have known Taylor was dead... Was Charlotte a short, stocky woman? Or at least a short woman? She could have added padding. After all, she was an actress-wannabe... Her behavior throughout the many investigations was also rather shady and obstructive. How many bullets does a 38 hold and how many were recovered? It appears that Sands was present and may have seen something. Perhaps he blackmailed whomever and disappeared - or was made to disappear permanently... It truly is a mystery! Poor Mr. Taylor! Anyway, you have a new subscriber!!

Hello,I just came across your KZfaq channel and this beautiful telling of William D. Taylor’s murder. I love the detail and visuals but most of all the truth and compassion you show to Mabel Normand. The dignity you give back to William and Mabel in the way you tell their story is truly lovely.although both lives ended tragically you remind us, although they were flawed they were human and had amazing gifts. I have read so much about this and it truly is a mystery. So many people want to vilify Mabel and make William a deviant to fit their narrative. As far as the Shelby and Minter dynamic? That mother and daughter situation was polluted by greed and money. Unfortunately, by a mother who wanted the fame and fortune that her daughter had. Maybe her beauty as well because I think it was in “A Cast of Killers” by Sidney D. Kirkpatrick her mom also was attracted to William. It also suggested that she payed off the district attorney’s. I much prefer your narrative ❤

This was a great 3-part series. Superimposing the locations then to what exists now is really brilliant work. And the Palmer angle and the idea that a "confession" was sat on for decades really caught me by surprise, all new to me. The mystery and all the stories just further proves that a lot of the "lore" that is now accepted after years of being repeated always needs to be taken with a critical eye. I have found some glaring errors, for example, in the "lore" of Valentino along with inaccuracies by "experts" who have written books. And I'm still finding more information that has never been really addressed when it comes to Valentino. I have a backlog to write about!

The last of this wonderful well researched classic tale of old Hollowood. You have done a brilliant job. Thank you again. What even makes it better is your timing . Only 3 days ago. Please start on your next story, I will be there to view in great appreciation. Bravo!

Whole heartedly agree with you about Mable Normand. Why there is little mention of her or a great movie about her is a shame. Loved your detailed look at this murder. I’ve been interested in this ever since I read the book A cast of killers in 86. I’ve also read Tinseltown and listened to Podcasts. I love how you pulled all the information together and took us to the actual places, great job. Wondering if you’d be interested in doing this kind of treatment to Rosco Arbuckles case, my other obsession. I know you touched on it here but there is sooo much to his case. Again brilliant job, thank you.

So well done. I’ve read quite a bit about this mystery and I go back and forth among Shelby, Sands and Gibson. We’ll just never know unless something hidden shows up. Thanks for your exhaustive research and filming. I finally have visuals and much more background material to flesh out these characters. Thank you. Keep on searching and researching - you are scratching an itch!

Wow this was a fabulous 3 part real life murder mystery!! Of course I’ve heard of most of these main “characters “ before, but I had no idea of this event. What an amazing mini series this would make. Great job, Justin. You should produce more vids like this. 🙂🇨🇦

I love , love , love this series. I learned so much. Had heard about Mabel but had no clue as to how important she was to Hollywood history. Your piece was also very entertaining and seeing actual locations really helps with the visual imagery. Please do more like this. I know Hollywood is full of great old murder stories so you won’t run out of material anytime soon.

I, too, am mesmerized by this case. You've done an amazing job on a long-lived and fascinating case. And fascinating people. Fascinating everything. There are a lot of cobwebs between us and old Hollywood, Santa Monica, their surrounds and people. Thank you.

This video collection was very good and thorough. I've been fascinated by this story for years. I do wish you had mentioned director King Vidor's attempts to solve the killing so he could make a movie about it in the 1950s. Vidor and Taylor were contemporaries, but you probably already know that. Thanks.

Calvary cemetery stands on its own as one of the most interesting places to see many beautiful and unique headstones. Well worth the trip to visit. Don't forget your camera or cell phone. Thanks a bunch for these videos. You really put a great deal of time into them. Sad that no one was prosecuted for Mr. Taylor's murder.

This is riveting! I am curious more and more about who the man was who was seen outside William's home, could he have been a spurned lover who William had kept in the shadows-maybe the driver knew more, and out of loyalty to William kept much of what he knew about William's life to himself?

Great program! I always get an eerie feeling seeing where all those great homes used to be. It's a shame they've been razed to make room for "progress". Absolutely fascinating story, watched many versions, but I must say yours is top notch!! Love your voice& presentation. If only walls could talk, oh wait only before they're demolished😕. I'll definitely be watching more of your programs😘
