The Mysterious Disappearance of Jean Spangler Episode - 1
👉👉 • The Mysterious Disappe...
Jean Spangler's disappearance is a fascinating yet tragic case that occurred in Hollywood in 1949. Here's a brief overview of the case, which has intrigued many over the years:
Jean Spangler was a young actress and model who disappeared on October 7, 1949, under mysterious circumstances. She was last seen leaving her home in Los Angeles, telling her sister-in-law that she was going to meet her ex-husband to discuss child support payments and then going to work on a film set. However, she never arrived at the film set, and she was never seen again.
One of the most notable clues in the case was a note found in Spangler's purse, which was discovered in Griffith Park several days after her disappearance. The note was addressed to "Kirk" and read: "Can't wait any longer, Going to see Dr. Scott. It will work best this way while mother is away." The note raised numerous questions and theories about who "Kirk" and "Dr. Scott" were and what Spangler meant by her message.
The case received significant media attention at the time, with speculation swirling about Spangler's personal life and relationships. Some suspected foul play, while others believed she may have staged her disappearance to start a new life elsewhere.
Despite extensive investigations by law enforcement and private detectives, Jean Spangler's fate remains unknown, and her disappearance remains one of Hollywood's enduring mysteries.

@@chrisharris7931 Is there any proof that Kirk Douglas had raped Natalie Wood besides Lana Wood's assertions? You definitely have to do a Black Dahlia episode. Hodel’s daughter, Tamar, was best friends with Michelle Phillips of the Mama’s and the Papa’s. Michelle was married to that POS of the same fame, John Phillips. John was accused many years later by his own daughter of violating her the exact same way. Michelle didn’t believe her despite rightfully sticking up for her best friend Tamar many years later. Even Tamar stepped up for Michelle’s step-daughter when Michelle disowned her for years after the fact. The stepdaughter in question is actress Mackenzie Phillips. Today, her father John Phillips is now well known to have been a monster in his own right. Looooove your work in this series. I just now found you and I’m hooked to your channel!

Another gross angle: Mackenzie is half-sister to Bijou Phillips, Danny Masterson’s now Ex-wife. The later two are part of that same cult that Laura Prepon was. Hollywood sure is a strange place. Everything comes together about five times over!

I grew up in the 1950's, going to the Farmer's Market many times with my mom and later as a teenager. I remember what it originally looked like very well. It's nice to know that Du Par's is still there. I went to the Du Par's in Studio City my entire life, until it was torn down in 2018. My friends and I called the FLW house in Los Feliz the Monkey House, because someone said it reminded them of the Wicked Witch's castle in "The Wizard of Oz." I was waiting for the name George Hodel to come up. That guy has been named in connection with every missing female case in Los Angeles in the late 1940's and later.

Went into a full zinging panicky feeling on the 101. My Aunt & Uncle asked me what was wrong, they moved there in the 1950’s Buena Park. Told my Mother in private, I lived here before. Amazing coverage of a Hollywood story I’ve never heard. Your research showing all the news articles and photos, census addresses, photography and narration is Emmy worthy. You must have filmed those nights scenes at 3 a.m. without a car passing you! I am definitely subscribing to your channel. Fantastic job and I tend to agree with your theory of Jean’s demise at the hands of the studio and an abortionist. What I don’t understand is why the note to Kirk was still in her purse. I would think the “fixers” would have checked the contents. And, what a very sad life Florence had with the loss of two children, a granddaughter and her husband. I wonder how old Christine was when she fully realized the story of her mother’s disappearance because you can bet her dad and step-mother didn’t tell her. Your choice of music was perfect!

Another wonderful double episode Justin. So well researched and I loved seeing the spots as they are today mixed in with the articles and photos you found from the day. I appreciate all the effort you put in to these. I hope the interview with Mamie Van Doren works out you are such a good interviewer and I always look forward to seeing new interviews from you (although I love these tours as well!) I still think about that interview you did with Mark Patton often. I hadn't thought about those pre 1996 days in a long time when I watched that video and it really allowed me to look back on memories and feelings I hadn't thought about properly and gave me words to something I experienced but mostly witnessed as a young women volunteering and spending time with men dying of AIDS and living HIV+. That interview deeply effected me and I hope you get to do a lot more hosting like these tours and the interviews which you are so skilled and talented at. Your thoughtfulness shines through in both and I really value how well you present the histories and the people you are interviewing. Anyways, sorry for the gush, but I figure it's always better to say the nice things your thinking and I hope you know how good you are at this. I also hope you are well and having a good 2024 so far. All the best x All the best.

I thought the same thing -- that Jean could still be alive at 100! But as you say, it's too improbable to believe. I'm not surprised that Jean's daughter Christine didn't agree to speak with you -- and I imagine, you would have been surprised if she had! But as you are so thorough with your research, it was worth a try. I have no idea how Jean's disappearance played outside of LA & Hollywood after its first notoriety, but perhaps moving Christine to Florida, across the country also fit in with Dexter's ulterior motives -- not only to remove Christine from Jean's family but also himself from the LA police department's eyes -- at least Christine could grow up without being known for her mother's infamous disappearance during her childhood in a new location. Kirk Douglas's life seems as film noir as his first movies were. It does seem likely that Jean and Kirk slept together and when she became pregnant she would have needed his help for an abortion. She might have likely believed that a studio doctor's abortion procedure would be a safer alternative than trying to find an abortionist on her own. But tragically, I think she died during or after her abortion. Why her purse was flung out by Griffith Park is intriguing -- was it placed there as a false clue while her body was being disposed of elsewhere? I guess at that time dogs weren't used by PDs for scenting out clues. Her purse might have been ideal for that. Poor Jean and her family. Two forever missing children. Thank you for your tour and vast research as you followed her trail and all the outliers that emerged. Two questions -- I forgot if you mentioned it, but did the police ever call the number Jean gave to her sister-in-law that last evening? And did Thad Brown (who questioned Kirk Douglas) also work on the William Desmond Taylor murder case? His name sounds familiar to me.

Another great vlog. I remember reading about this in a book a decade ago. I came away thinking Kirk Douglas was involved. It does sound like she was pregnant and the fixers came to ‘help”. I don’t know why the ex husband would be suspect. Just revenge? Why would he take her out on his boat and dump her? That’s his daughter’s mother. Anyway, like you said, we will never know. Kirk Douglas told police that on the set of YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN, he had spoken to Jean, and kidded with her, but said they never "dated". So what other Kirk did she know, and why the note telling "Kirk" of seeing Dr. Scott? Then, Kirk is widely suspected of having raped under-aged Natalie Wood over 6 hours at the Chateau Marmont, but Natalie refused to ever name him, saying only her rapist was a famous movie star. Never charged, he denied it, and rode out decades of persistent whispers. We can't condemn suspects like Douglas or Dr. Hodel, but neither can we deny our suspicions. Great job here, JUSTIN ROOT.

Wow, love your terrific production of this classic Hollywood mystery, so well told and researched! I tend towards the husband-did-it hypothesis; he seems to have had motive, means, and opportunity, assuming he was lying about not meeting Jean that night. What a sad story for Jean's mother also. BTW, I understand Steve Hodel, George Hodel's son, wrote another book accusing his father of also being the Zodiac Killer, which seems a really far-fetched theory.

Loved these episodes on Jean. You really worked hard & did your research. I also liked how you took us to locations that brought to life Jean’s story. Because the police did not investigate her ex & rule him out as a suspect, it leaves me with the thought that it is possible that he had something to do with her disappearance. That or like you believe, she had a botched abortion & died from it & her body was dumped somewhere. I truly feel for what Florence went through such a sad life.

That was really, really good! I love the fact that you know so much about LA and continue to research it. I've subscribed, and now I'm going to watch your George Reeves story. I thought it was neat what you said here about Eddie Mannix because I had already thought that if Kirk Douglas was involved, his studio would take care of it for him.

I thought Kirk Douglas had a contract with Hal Wallis in 1949.

@@golden888888888888 I did not know that! KD established his own independent production company in 1949. The movie he made with Miss Spangler was made at Warner Bros, where Wallis was a producer.

Excellent story-telling. I agree with your conclusion as to what happened but it would have been great if the police followed up on the husband. I imagine Dexter poisoned the mind of Christine so she never sought out Jean's mother, her grandmother. Too sad for all.

This was fascinating - and you've effectively created an ambience of Old Hollywood. I hadn't been familiar with the case of Jean Spangler. I read Steve Hodel's book, however, and personally was not convinced by his theory. In fact, a photo he included (you actually display it at 22:40, the image on the right) that was supposedly of Elizabeth Short was obviously not her, and her own family stated that it wasn't her in the photo. To get that simple detail wrong didn't help his case.

I think it's very possible that Dexter had something to do with her disappearance. I guess we will never know, unfortunately. Thank you for this series of videos, and take care.
