The song is actually NOT about the drowning guy. That was a myth that Eminem cemented as if it were true. The song is a breakup song that he wrote after his divorce in 1980.

Well, those words were put in the mouth of Stan the deranged superfan in the song Stan, so I think it was just part of the joke that he would understand them way too superficially.

As per Phil’s own words, he himself explain the meaning behind the lyrics. He says he just opened his mouth and the lyrics poured out. Indeed, he said the song is overall about his divorce, but the lyrics are still kind of cryptic in parts. (As anyone who has gone through a divorce can tell ya, your mind goes to a lot of different places…some dark places…as you try to process what’s happening. Especially when it’s you that’s willing to try and make the marriage work, but your spouse isn’t willing. Some dark places, indeed.)

I grew up in Michigan and this urban legend was treated like a FACT from the moment the song came out. I was actually telling my kids about it when I realized … this is probably not even true, googled it, and was like…guess what bullshit your mom believed until today.

@@markdenio4537 Has happened in a lot of his shows with different stage sets. When he did a tour 'in the round' the drums appeared from the centre of the stage. They need that drumkit, as it differs from his normal kit

Phil was the drummer for Genesis for many years, then the lead singer, Peter Gabriel, quit the band. They tried to find a new lead singer, and finally Phil offered to do it. History made.

Do The West Side from his 1990 tour. Shows Phil and his amazing band at their best. Featuring Earth, Wind and Fire's horn section, which Phil "borrowed" from them for his solo efforts. I'm pleased to say I witnessed this legend one last time in concert. 11-15-21 United Center in Chicago with Genesis. 10-13-19 saw Phil's Still Not Dead Yet tour in Denver. At 70, the man still has it.

The drum part in this song is pretty simple, so it's really not much harder to sing on top of it than if you were just clapping along to it. If you want a more difficult drum+singing moment from him, listen to Genesis' Dance On A Volcano

Agreed. The motion on drumming is really sort of antithetic to the stability you need to maintain vocals. The fact that his voice is not reacting to these violent motions of his body is quite amazing.

Actually although he can sing it perfectly well live, the studio and live versions are using an early version of an autotune-like program for distortion. He was an early user of it. Listen to the studio version again and tell me that you don't hear autotune.

My wife and I saw Phil in Toronto, Canada in 2007, Phil and the other drummer, Chester, did a 15 min. drum battle. One of the greatest concerts we've been to.

He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son is on the Domino tour with Genesis currently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

Wow. Thanks for that detailed information. I love when folks share their knowledge with others. Phil Collins is one of my all time favorites. It just saddened me when I saw a picture of him performing recently from his chair on stage. No longer able to play the drums. However, it’s still a blessing he’s able to still sing on tour and he’s passed the drumming torch over to his son.

Singing about an ex wife when they were breaking up, “ you can wipe off that grin, I know where you’ve been, it’s all been a pack of lies”. That voice to still be that good at his age and whilst playing those drums with every fibre of his being. Pure talent, singer song writer, composer, sublime drummer, piaonist ❤❤. I grew up listening to the best music, you know when it’s great, when it still resonates decades later. Love seeing people’s reactions

This was the song where everyone absolutely pounded out that drum beat in the car, driver included. You'd pull up to a red light and see the cars next to you doing the same, because they were listening to the same station. It was like it was required, like everyone singing Bohemian Rhapsody if it happened to come on the radio. Or air shredding Freebird during the solo. It became something like a religious rite; we all did it and we still do and pass it along to our kids, too.

The song is about a horrible divorce he was going through at the time he wrote it. Best live performance ever recorded. One of the top drummers of all time. A vocoder is used... and it's brilliantly synthesized.

I love Phil Collins. This is one of my favorite songs. The build up and anticipation for that first drum beat. It saddens me that his health has deteriorated and he can no longer play the drums. This song will never be the same live without him playing the drums! 🥺😰

Phil Collins is HUGE! In the ‘80s he could easily fill any size stadium. He’s a massive talent & one of only a few (he may actually be the only person) to play Live Aid 1985 at both locations. He played in Philly & the flew to England to play drums for Led Zeppelin!!!

Dang this one brings me back to my younger years.That drumming gives me goosebumps everytime. I love metal/ progressive rock, but I can appreciate Phil Collins and other genres as well. This song is about his divorce I believe. You all need to dive more into his solo work and his work with Genesis.

Phil Collins was originally the drummer (and later the lead singer) for Progressive Rock turned Pop Rock band Genesis, going back all the way to his debut in the band in 1971. I'd definitely suggest reacting to some Genesis, specifically the early 70s songs but there are some later songs that are worth listening to! Some Genesis classics: -Firth Of Fifth -The Musical Box -Supper's Ready -Land of Confusion -Dance On A Volcano -Dancing With The Moonlit Night -One For The Vine Also necessary to point out is that prior to 1976, lead vocals were performed by Peter Gabriel, who also became a big popular solo artist. He had songs like Sledgehammer, Big Time, and Solsbury Hill that are still legendary today!

The intro just pulls you in. It's the simplicity of each note/sound change that' so effective. Every single part of this music is so basic, but the whole is so much greater than the sum of it's parts. And then Phil's voice put together with that iconic drumming makes this song so special & unique. The video just sets it off nicely to show him on drums & vocals LIVE. Must have been some buzz to be there.

Seriously this was one of the best shows I've ever seen and I've seen so many. When this song starts the crowd always go nuts. I remember watching Miami Vice as a child and then riding in the lambo with the night sky and you can literally feel it. That moment. The best night of your life kinda moment and every time I play this song I always feel it. It's EPIC and ICONIC!

I have been to a number of Phil Collins concerts, Peter Gabriel and Genesis, as well as Stones, AC/DC, Rush. They are all amazing! This one, I remember so well, and it still gives me chills. His drum solo/duets with Chester Thompson are amazing, the highlight of his concerts.

The thing is, he hadn't fully left Genesis when this came out. His output, creatively, in the 80's to the 90's is astounding. Abacab (G) came out in 1981, Face Value (P) as well. Hello, I Must be Going (P) was '82, Genesis (G) 1983. No Jacket Required (P) 1985, Invisible Touch (G) 1986, But Seriously (P) 1989, and We Can't Dance (G) 1991. After that Genesis was pretty much done, except for 1997's Calling All Stations whereas Phil's continued on into the 2000's. And the thing is again, that album streak isn't anything to laugh at. There are no fillers. Those albums are filled with hit after hit, excellent track after excellent track. Even if you don't react to them, you should listen to those albums. I guarantee they'll blow your mind.

*When all of his work is combined (solo stuff, Genesis work, producer work, collaborative/duet stuff) Collins spent more time in the Top 40 in the US in 1980s than any other artist. With Genesis, he sold out four consecutive nights at the 80,000-capacity Wembley Stadium in July 1987 (which was a record at the time), while across 86/87 Genesis had five top 5 singles in the US charts from the Invisible Touch album, which is Beatles-eqsue. It's no exaggeration to say Genesis were the biggest band on the planet in 86/87.*

They will. How lucky was I to have been a teenager/twenties in the middle/end of the 80s. Genesis, Phil Collins, Dire Straits, Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Chris Rea, Simple Minds... It's so good to see young people being introduced to this music and sometimes I think 70s and 80s music gets lost between 60s and modern music.

True Story. At one of the stops on this international tour, the RISING Drum Set became stuck about 3 feet short of the Stage. And Phil had to jump down in the hole and perform his magic. In one his interviews, he described the incident.

Phil is such a laid back, cheeky guy, and he's still got it after all this time, his voice is just so powerful. I heard the song was about the break up of one of his wife's or partners as heard he's been married a few times. Do you remember his song called " Mama" ? It's a song about a creepy guy obsessed with a prostitute but calls her "mama" ( that's what I heard it's about) He sings it SO strongly and powerfully it's mind blowing, then there's the creepy laugh he does in it too. It's great to watch it with the original video so you get the full impact. ☺️❤️👏

Hello from France. 😊 I was there. It was at Paris Bercy in 2004. The dark was extraordinary. there had been a trio of drums, Phil Collins, his drummer and another who also played the djembe. It was phenomenal 😊

As others have said this is about his divorce. Another epic drum-based one with a similar sentiment is "I Don't Care Anymore"--there are live versions, but even the studio version is pretty epic.

Look into it further. He says in one video that it isn't about anything. He did write the song while going through his divorce. But that is about all it has to do with it. Phil said in 2016: "I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I'm not quite sure what the song is about, but there's a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration."

@@joejacobsen6822 Agreed---not literally "about his divorce", but rather written while going THROUGH his divorce. So it is borne out of emotions he felt during his divorce--I think his pain resonates in most of his Face Value album, if you've ever listened to it all. I think any one of us who have gone through similar pain can find the music in this and even still on his second solo album (Hello, I Must Be Going) resonates with feeling that pain.

We saw him in Houston many years ago. We took our 2 young daughters and they were converted and love Phil until this day. Happy you enjoyed it and were as moved as we were.

Nothing to do with a drowning, it's an emotional allegory about the breakup of his marriage. This is in my top 3 of all time fave live performances,what I wouldn't give to have been there in the audience! You can find that whole concert on youtube, it was pure magic. I love how the audience starts to lose it when he's almost to the drums, knowing what's about to come!

I will be telling around about my age, 🤪 but I was blessed to be able to see the original group Genesis at Winterland in San Francisco. To me, Phil Collins has always been a focal point in his music and a good songwriter from the very jump along with being a high-tech kind of a guy, it’s so sad to see that he has to endure an illness that took him away from something that he loved so much his music. Hopefully he can still be able to write and continue to make song. Enjoy your reactions you take care and be safe.🤠

phil collins was iconic when i was a teenager in the early 80s- i remember the first time i heard this song-vinyl 33 1/3 and i listened to it over and over.

Phil is started out at 19 in 1970 as the drummer for Genesis, becoming the lead singer in 1976. He started his solo career in 1981 with this song. While still with Genesis until the mid nineties.This whole show is on KZfaq. Phil is iconic, his live performances are perfection. Genesis shows are fantastic. Every time I watch this video it reminds me of the first time I watched it. I was an anxiety ridden, waiting for him to get to his drum set. Yelling out loud to nobody in particular, “he’s walking to his drums too slow 😰!!!” When he’s walking up that last set of stairs, and he turns back and sings, “I remember, don’t worry, how could I ever forget…” like he is teasing the drums. Also, he only took over singing for Genesis after Peter Gabriel left.
