I think it's a pure luck if your guess is 3 meters off or 0 meters off. In both occasions your guess is exact but the marker could be slightly off or the map is too much zoomed in or not enough zoomed in. Anyways, getting inside 10 meters should grant full points in any map.

Yeah, that gate one was definitely off. A lot of them have a streetview standing on the side of the road, but the location is somehow in the middle.

@@Pzychotix a lot of photosphere locations (locations where you can't move) are added to google by users and are not official Google coverage. Especially famous places and landmarks have a lot of tourists taking photospheres and placing their location on the map incorrectly. These photospheres can end up in the game unless the map creator has filtered them off.

As a geoguessr veteran, I find it funny how much they seem to obsess about the distance. A perfect score is a perfect score. Typically we tend to play competitively with a minute to guess which makes a perfect score very hard to achieve, particularly so on the standard worldwide setting. Developed countries like Japan is a lot easier though, if you can read japanese. Good luck if you're planted somewhere on a road in the middle of nowhere in Mexico. I definately prefer the random setting, because it really rewards you for knowing the the environments, as well as having a basic grasp on languages.

I mean, we all want it, some just don't think the lengths that you have to go to try and ensure it are worth it (but also the fact that they're limiting their searches to Japan enables it so much more, as heavily urbanized areas can easily provide you a ton of information to pinpoint a precise location)

How the hell did Google get their truck onto that random rock outcropping? Did they just take the camera out there by hand? If so, why? Why was it important to document that particular piece of shoreline?

It's a 360 camera on a tripod. There are tons of locations on Google street view that have been added like this. They're not exactly "important" but that can be said for a majority of street view. They add it purely so people at home around the world can see what the area looks like. I think the public can also submit their own additions, though I'm sure it's a complex process.
