As a former IT technician, I am impressed by your professional approach to this issue. You stress tested everything within a reasonable time frame. The customer must have been delighted you solved this conundrum, and I daresay will only reset the PC when necessary.

It's all about a system to start ruling out things. Very quickly you knew it wasn't a software problem. Then it's just start with eliminating possible hardware causes. You have a real understanding of a system and how to check it out. Great work.

It's a pretty standard rule to never work on the machine with the custommers harddisk/ssd. 1st it's not our problem if the custommer have pirated software and we should never ask to get passwords to access their Windows or other OS installs. It's jus as private as a bank account or credit credit card. I agree that it's always better with a full install, but most techs will just disconnect all drives connected and use their own media with a basic install and some diag tools. If it turns out there is nothing technically wrong that I can find, I can recommend stuff that can enhance an older build or prolong its life, and unless people is total novices into installing windows themself every tech should have a usb stick that installs the latest Windows with all updates, install proper drivers and reseals Windows, in case it turns out to be a software issue. A true service tech will have no problems in instructing people in how to retrieve their personal files on the boot drive for free before the custommer dedecide if to letting the store wipe the disk. It's of cause fully up to the individual store/tech if they are gonna charge for this and how much. Unless it's something you just do in your spare time, you can't really expect to get this for free in a store. But just as with your car, you can never fully trust the repairshop if they are gonna overcharge you for something you did'nt really "need", unless you know them well.

Yeah, it seems to be rare, and that's why techs miss it, probably. I have been working on PCs for 18 years and only seen two bad switches, too. The first one was easy, because it was obviously rebooting every few seconds. The second one was a real poser, because it only partially failed. The PC would run for days before shutting itself off. The switch would randomly close due to fan vibration, I am guessing. Because of the weirdness of that, random shutdowns that appear to be heat related, I still check the switches before looking at heat. It's faster than going down the heat rabbit hole, so I eliminate the switches as the culprit first. Fortunately, I learned this on my own PC, rather than having a customer waiting on me to learn this lesson.

Over 25 years in the field and I've seen maybe 5 bad power switches and a couple of bad rest switches, but the most recent was at least 18 years ago. The switches used to be a lot bigger and more complicated than they are now. Ironically the cheapo momentary contact switches they use now may actually be more reliable.

Wow man, big props and respect, from a former 23 year Computer Repair Technician. That was really nice of you and yeah, dude had a hell of a time. Lots of expense, just in shipping. I've done many a free job too, just cause I felt for the person. Built my first PC back in 1990 and owned my first one 3 years before that. By 1992 I was so interested in it that I wanted to do it for a living and became a Tech and got really good at it. I worked for IBM, Compaq and many small ma and pa computer shops and even ran my own computer business, twice. Always those little thing nobody thinks of, eh? I've seen bad switches before, although it's not a common thing, I've found. It's happened to me a handful of times, but certainly not my most common problem, not by a long shot. I've seen more bad motherboards and hard drives and power supplies than bad power or reset switches. But considering the wear you witnessed? Hmmm, yeah, they've seen a lot of use, probably more than usual. I like your style though, between you and the customer, you had good communication, he gave you a good list of what's been done and that was over half the work right there. Because most components had been replaced already, it made your troubleshooting easier. I was always like that with customers, tell me everyrthing, it will help me diagnose better. Same with auto Mechanics and Dr.'s etc. tell them everything, don't be embarrassed, it's nothing they haven't seen before and it helps them help you. Anyway, that said, with all the low down he gave you, it was time to think outside the box. Where's the only other variables? Start looking at the case and you nailed it.

Yep I had the same issue on a Dell desktop a few years ago, Dell had sent out an engineer several times and they had replaced the PSU once and the motherboard twice, plus various other cards, but it still kept restarting when warm. It took me 15 mins to isolate the reset switch as the problem. When the PC warmed up the expansion caused the reset switch to make contact and restart the PC. After a small adjustment to the switch the problem went away. I was rather pleased I had solved an issue that three Dell engineers were unable to fix.

Excellent job man! Kick ass process of elimination using simple logic. Too many people get used to their machine telling them what's wrong & totally forget to use some simple logic to solve the problem. I'm a mechanic & see the very same thing with automobiles. Nothing beats simple logic & process of elimination, especially when there's a rare problem such as a bad reset button. Lol. Who would've thought?? I just wonder what the guys at the shop he took it to will be saying when they see this video??

Personally, I would just leave that front panel the way it is and disconnect the reset switch. My experience with reset switches is to leave them alone. They're often a root cause when used improperly to corrupt windows. My workaround if a force reboot is necessary, is to hold the power button down.

I recently had a go around with my old HP Z230. It decided to not post, no video, no beeps. The fans came on OK but within 30 seconds would run at high RPMs. Reset the Ram, checked all the cords and disconnected everything from the MB. Same issue. Thought it was my PSU but it being an HP 19 pin proprietary unit, my PSU tester was useless. I replaced the CMOSS battery and it finally gave me 5 beeps. which led me to inspect the CPU. I removed it and looked real closely at it with a magnifying glass and noticed one little brown/blackish smudge on only one contact. I cleaned it with rubbing alcohol and replaced it with new thermal paste. It fired right up and has been running fine since. I appreciate this video and you sharing your diagnostic expertise. My condo furnace wasn't heating. HVAC company wanted $13k to replace furnace + A/C. I noticed it would fire occasionally when turning on the furnace light switch. Turns out the $2 light switch was bad. Replaced it myself with a spare switch from my parts bucket.

I just repaired a neighbor's PC when his power switch broke. I just got him a new case and switched components. If I had realized that I could have just switched the reset button for the power, it would have been wonderful. Just a few days too late for this video to come out.

Quite often with hardware, it’s the bits that move which can wear out but impressed that you eliminated software as the cause and then hunted down the hardware issue. I am very impressed with your diagnostic style! It is very impressive! Most like the quick-fix approach. It is really refreshing to see someone who didn't simply accept the easy way out. I wish that there would be someone like you around here! My son gave me a MacBook Pro that he purchased from Apple refurbished. One day it simply stopped working. Apple claims the damage was caused due to water damage, so their insurance rejected the cost of repairs. He finally gave it to me after quite some time for parts. After having it lay around for years, I tried powering it up. It was fully functioning! However, after some time, it stopped working again. Clearly not a sign that the problem is from water damage like Apple claimed. They simply took the easy way out! I personally don't know enough about laptops in order to fix it. Too bad!

Awesome topic.. as I have been a tech since 1991. I have seen things like this in the past.. always best to eliminate all external items/connections to the mother board. All usb headers. Audio. All fans except cpu fan. All data cables etc. great troubleshooting. Great content as always..

Wow! That was really a good step-by-step diagnosis and detection! I'm currently having an issue on my Lenovo Slim 3 laptop, it seems to be the shutdown and sleep when the lid is closed. I use the the Novo button every time it does not power-up when opening the lid. Thanks for the details. 👍👍👍

Good troubleshooting. Well done sir. I've seen this before. I've also seen a keyboard connected to a system that was doing something similar. Somehow it was shorting out the USB port intermittently. A faulty power supply can do this too, or one with a failing fan. But usually those will cause the system to completely shut down (not reboot). One time I had ruled everything out with a similar symptom (other than the motherboard), so I pulled the board from the system and noticed a screw was under the board barely lodged between the chassis and the board causing a short from time to time lol.

I once had a customer system that was rebooting randomly. Nobody could figure it out. I found that a spider had made a web inside the CPU cartridge (this was back when it was a slotted Pentium II). The webbing crossed multiple CPU contacts and must have been just enough voltage drop or flipped bit or something but it would randomly reboot. Cleaned the CPU contacts, everything worked great. You had a good methodical approach. When I was watching it I started suspecting something with the front panel as it seemed to reset when you accessed the USB drive that you plugged in there.

Well done. NGL, I was surprised that it was the reset switch as it’s not something I’ve seen since the 90s when I used to build and service Dells and Gateways for my University. I think more people need to take control of their setups and build their own PCs… oh and of course, watch top content like this to see that with a bit of patience and logic it’s possible to save yourself a pretty penny or in this case $700!

I wanted to thank you for making this video. I was having the same shutting down issue with my pc. It would keep restarting on any OS (internal HDD orexternal flash drive), but not while in the bios. Mine wasn't the reset switch, but was the power button. When I plugged the reset switch into where the power button goes it stopped the restarting issue. I hadn't thought of the front switches until watching this video

I've often found in my computer diagnostics, that the dumb stuff, like that switch, comes up more often than it should. That's why I, too, always check the dumb stuff first. Looking for all the obvious causes first is usually the quickest to test. In the case of this problem I would have asked the question: what is the simplest cause of a reset? A switch? Keep up the good work.

Great video again. Inspired me to replace my CPU cooler. And to run the prime 95 test. In the past I would have suspected power supply or memory. Removed half of memory and boot. Then swap the halves and boot. After ruling out the memory - swap the power supply. But I now know to disconnect the reset button from the MB because YOU have educated me in past videos about failures of that button. And it turns out it was the button. Great video.

I took my desktop machine apart and took it outside and gave it a good cleaning and dusting, replaced the heatsink compound under the cpu cooler and proudly put it back into service. It wasn't having problems, just needed cleaning. Then the problems started. I couldn't figure it out. Time and time again it reset. Then I got the blue screen of death (more than once). I put it on the table like you have and stared at it for days. Finally, I realized that I had accidentally tucked the cpu fan cable behind something and had plugged a different fan in the connector. The mother board was happy because it could see a fan turning, just not the right one. I had toasted the cpu and it never recovered. I switched to an I7 laptop with two monitors (I don't game) and everything's been fine. Sometimes I'm my own worst enemy and those problems are the worst kind of frustration.

It's a fairly common issue in laptops. Grime around the power button, or sticky liquid, or simply the user smashing it :D Though, yes, I don't think I've ever had to replace a power/reset button on a desktop.

This is why I keep old computer's reset/power buttons when I discard the cases. I have repaired a few broken/half functioning reset or power buttons over the years. Also, when testing a PC to see if the issues is hardware or software, I removed everything except what is required to run

I have come across this a few times i started building pcs late 1990s. I actually collected pcs that people were throwing out for rubbish, so I had plenty of spare parts

i wanted to say thanks for the info on the EVO. when i built my I7 930 some 12~13 years ago i put a pelter cooler on & it ran solid with an OC@ 3.4. a few years back the pelter died & i put the stock cooler on. since then i had temps just like what you got in this vid, and that was not running overclocked. to do some video editing with Studio 10, i had to under clock to around 2.4, otherwise my computer would shut down or lockup. just never got around to getting a new cooler. after watching your vid, i clicked your link (it shows as Currently unavailable), scrolled down and found the EVO V2 listed. carted it and got. the description isn't really clear, appears to say it will fit LGA1366, but i had to do some mods to get it to mount which really wasn't a problem for me. so far, max cpu temp has been 84c with prime95, watching a vid, and multiple windows open in 2 different browsers with multiple tabs in each, mildly OCed@2.9. oh, and nice catch on the bad reset switch.

It is a shame that he could not get better support locally. I have been working with computers for over 48 years and have run across this problem before and wound up taking the front panel off as it was in this case the power switch on the panel causing the problem, as there was no reset switch which I would tell people not to use that any way. Initially watching your video I would have though it was the power supply, but I could see right away that the power supply had nothing to do with this. I like that you checked the connectors as I have found that on custom computers, guys frequently make mistakes there as well. Any way very nice job and enjoyed watching your process. I like your power test to push the CPU to maximum and see where the heat shows up numerically. Very nicely done.

Great Job Carey! Logical and step by step analysis and troubleshooting procedure! I've been in the game since we could & would change discrete compenets so might have changed the FP reset switch if possible? And I hope you recoup the cost of the new fan/cooler Assy. if not from the client! Apart form that, a great outcome that seems to have eluded all others and caused unnecessary cost & wasted time without a resolution!? A lesson for the client perhaps that DIY is not the right way to go and best to refer it to a Pro like yourself first for a proper and more cost effective outcome! Good news is I believe you've won a new client for life! 10 out of 10! ..... 🙂👋 👍

I used to build loads of pc's, but I must admit I think I would have missed the reset switch too. Perhaps if I saw the state the button was in, I might have checked that. But following along with your video, that was not noticeable. So my diagnosis at first was overheating of the CPU. Would have checked the temp from bios though. The slow boot, might be able to be fixed by running a dignostics on the filesystem, if it's ntfs, then chkdsk may produce some results.

Amazing! I had this problem for years with a pair of ASRock B75m-pro PC's, and ran every possible test other than reversing the power/reset inputs, which solved the problem. Embarrassed to say I have over 40 years in PC, and even more horrifying, a Masters in CEM from RPI, as well as a PhD in Computer Science from MIT. Sheesh, should I ask them for a refund? Thank you for saving these PC's for me, and more so for a lesson in humility. G-dspeed.
