“Wagwan” or, more precisely “Wah G’wahn” is patois, which is frequently used in London” and is literally “What’s (wah) Going on (G’wan)?”. This is referencing the murders of Anthony Hardy, aka “The Camden Ripper”, but as far as I know he never murdered anyone named “Suzanne” and he dumped his victims in the trash, not the canal. The apparent sample taken from a News broadcast is fictional, but it’s pretty clever as Plan B could never really do a rap like this about one of Hardy’s actual victims (the song is bad enough, but can you imagine how bad it would be if he was talking about an actual person?). That said, what Hardy did was pretty much the same and Plan B is able to rap about what these poor girls went through in such detail simply by making it fictional. I was living just down the road when it all happened, it was horrific! Having said all that, several years after this song (and just around the corner from where I now live ffs!) a girl was murdered, chopped up and thrown in the canal, although it was her own brother who was guilty, not a sexual predator. Still, wah gwan?
