I use a popcorn popper as well. It has proper air circulation so I don't have to mix the beans by hand, it does that by itself and I've had no issues with not mixing it manually. This allows me to put some lid to catch the shells that fly everywhere otherwise and it's really clean and effective method. Afterwards I spread the beans on a plate or something and put them to freezer for a while. With pan roast I always have the issue that the "open" side of the bean tends to burn, popcorn machine results in a really nice even roast.

Try the fresh roast sr540. It works just like a popcorn you control the fan speed and the heat settings.

I just started roasting and I am using a convection stove. Spread the green beans on a grid in one layer and not too dense. 240°C / 12 to 16 minutes. You have to turn the grid at least once (no, not upside down) or stir the beans now and then. That gives a pretty even roast.

Excellent. Thanks. Obviously, most of us are limited to the first two options, number 2 being preferred. What I would like to see is a _detailed_ technical video series about modifying popcorn machines for controlled heating and fan function, and then how to use a modified machine regarding temperature.

Actually a wok would be better than a pan due to the shape. You would be able to move the beans around much easier.

A wok seems perfect. Also, I would probably like to do it outdoors on my turkey fryer burner. I can see a breeze being very helpful to carry away the skins while tossing the beans.

Would be an idea to add a switch or maybe even a pot on the element of the popcorn maker. I'm tempted to take apart mine just to see how easy it would be.

Interested to know what varieties you are growing and what kind of yield you are getting. As a coffee grower I am always curious about small growers. Are you getting at least a pound per plant?

Am i hearing a difference in the sound when you pour each roast into similar bowls? The last hooky roast sounds crisper. Like glass. I imagine it's because more moisture is removed.

The problem isn't necessarily the size of the coffee beans but the size of the grind (what is put out by the grinder). A pepper grinder can't grind it fine enough for coffee

@@TheGrandMug I consistent even roast seems to be the problem with all small home roasters. I was pretty excited about the Nesco home roaster its simple, compact and only has 3 buttons. Whenever someone designs a small roaster that I can press one button and get a light, medium or a dark roast and come out evenly. That will be a game changer and I would jump on that or the right price.

Great Vid, Where did your purchase the Huky 500T from?
@TheGrandMug

You'll have to Google around a bit but I ordered directly from the maker in Taiwan - Kuanho Li. You email him then he will send you a pricing sheet and you can make your order from there. There are plenty of resources online with people discussing which parts to order, etc.

Truly depends on what kinds of green coffee you purchase and how much effort you put into learning the roasting process. Also how much you value convenience and the experience of buying roasted coffee from shops/online. If you buy cheap green, don't want to deal with the learning curve, and really value the convenience and relationship you have with your local roaster, then maybe not. Personally though, I would say absolutely!

Why doesn't the peel come out when u roast coffee with the pan ?! Sorry for my English
@TheGrandMug
@TheGrandMug 2 жыл бұрын
Your English is great! The peel (called chaff) doesn't come off as much because of the lack of airflow in the system. In both the popper and the Huky there are fans that blow out the chaff.
