At 6p on April 9th, 2022 an Arsonist rocked the heart of Silicon Valley by starting a fire at the Home Depot located at 920 Blossom Hill Road in South San Jose. The fully stocked Home Depot was quickly and completely engulfed in flames within minutes of the arsonist setting the blaze, in a misguided attempt to distract the store's staff while he stole a cart full of power tools and goods. This video shows the fire raging, as well as some aerial shots of the aftermath. The footage of the aftermath was filmed after active fire fighting operations had concluded, and while there was no aerial support for the fire, nor any flight restrictions. The follow-up shots were taken 10 months after the blaze, and the building and property looked exactly the same. The only difference was that the building was no longer smoldering.
The link to the news story about this arson case can be found in the following link, countyda.sccgo...

Ground-based shots were obtained with a Samsung Z Fold on an electric unicycle (EUC). Aerial shots of the aftermath were obtained with a GEPRC Rocket Lite with the DJI Air Unit (DJI FPV), and a GEPRC Mark 5 with a GoPro Hero 11 Black.

10 months is nothing, will be like that for another year or so. First they have to satisfy the insurance adjusters of the actual value of the lost, building and inventory. Second you need a permit to remove the building, in California that process will take a year at least. The value of the property and where it is located is irrelevant. The laws of California are what is making this take so long.

Most likely an insurance delay due to the cause of the fire, also it's a crime scene that may not have been released yet.

@@johncford3957 You may be correct about the insurance, but Home Depot is a big rich company that can handle the cost of reopening the store while dealing with the insurance company. Regarding crime scene, it rarely takes more than a few weeks before they release the scene.

If it is rebuilt, it will be done before MAUI gets any help, in their case it's a land grab, very prime real estate. In this location, maybe they decided it wasn't profittable enough to rebuild? Because in Cali, they were allowing people steal up to 1000$ of werchandise per day, which most of us feel is insane, but, that's Gavin Newsom for ya...

When I look at this then look at a lowes store regardless if they have spacing in the shelving to deter fire... Fire In a Home Improvement store with chemicals, Oils, Lumber, Paint, Insulation.... Fire will get out of control real fast if it's not dealt with in minutes even if there is a sprinkler system... if it gets going good enough the fire will evaporate any water from those sprinklers and turn the entire building into a raging inferno.

Yep, you don't tear down a thing till insurance company settles. This may sit like this for YEARS because since it was arson, insurance company probably won't pay. I believe they have video of it starting and if none of the employees noticed the fire or made no attempt to put it out, that will be the reason insurance company won't pay. Happens ALL the time with fires that involve businesses.

The customers of that store were probably not inconvenienced all that much since there is probably a few Home Depot locations not far from this one. There are probably Lowe’s stores in the area as well. These large home improvement stores have saturated almost every city and town in the US and beyond! About 20 years ago, Home Depot wanted to build a store in a new shopping center close to wheee I live. The local residents fought against it and won. There was already a Lowe’s like two miles away, and another Home Depot like three or four miles from the once proposed location.

I worked Home Depot in NY on closing shifts…..1st… an accelerant was used, as the materials in that area don’t light with in minutes. 2nd… there is usually a Home Depot rep/special services rep would of spot it immediately & the SUPPRESSION SYSTEM was FAULTY, as the rest of the building would of been soaked and not burned as such as the ignited area!

A properly functioning automatic fire sprinkler system would’ve stopped this fire before it got going. According to one of the news stories on this incident, there was a record of fire code violations at this location. According to NFPA 25, a fire sprinkler system should be inspected and water flowed quarterly. One of the most common things that causes a fire sprinkler systems to fail is a shut valve. The valves on site should be electronically supervised, but the alarm system must also be functioning. In my 20+ year career in fire protection, I once inspected a building that had the fire main shut off by the city. When I contacted them they swore up and down that the problem was on the property. I saw a city works truck stop on the street out front and turn on the valve, then miraculously the water came back on. After questioning the occupants of the building, they said that the city works came by a few weeks earlier and warned them that the culinary water world be turned off for a few hours. They said that the water came back on and they didn’t really worry about anything else, except that the city works forgot to turn the fire main back on. That’s why inspections are important. I suspect that if Home Depot is found negligent for not doing their due diligence, they’ll be on the hook for this loss. They’re just lucky that nobody was seriously hurt or killed or they’d be on the hook for a possible injury or wrongful death lawsuit.
