Good Morning!! That was a great video. Your doing wonderful. When I bring stuff like this up to people they look at me like I have a second head. They complain about it being to much work and takes up so much time. I counter that by telling them that in the course of the conversation if we were working together the job would be nearly done. I tell them that instead of sitting on our butts we could be doing stuff like this to fill time instead of being lazy. They just don't get it. So sad that we've parted from self sufficient living in such a short time. Then when some natural disaster hits they're all freaking out. I don't get it.

I dehydrate everything I can. if a day goes by without something in it, I feel like I'm wasting my garden....lol. I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but I can't even find dehydrated 'soup' packets, in grocery stores anymore. It's soooooo nice to have all the stuff ready to go . Amazing buy on the onions! I am drying my egyptian walking onions into tasty onion powder, like crazy, ever since I saw a vid you made on it. Thank God there is a use for the tougher stalks!

Good grief! In what world am I missing out on that you can get 10 lbs. of onions for less than $2.00? Yikes! P.S. Went to Amazon yesterday and bought 2 of those neck fans. I thought they were funny but where I live it's hotter than you know where and will be humid for another month or so. I'm going to keep one charging and use the other one ALL DAY AND USE THE OTHER ALL NIGHT! Funniest, cleverest gadget ever! Thanks for the tip!

For that price on onions I would go back and get another 20lbs It's not like they will go bad and if your like me you use them all the time. Has Howie winterized the RV yet? Don't forget to put some mice traps out or something to kill them. One bad thing about winter is everything is trying to find a warm place. Looks like you are feeling a little better.

Good morning Bev. I love seeing your videos. Gorgeous deliciousness home economics! I also put up a relish with a lot of onions. It's from an old cookbook; but it seems to work well. I use it whenever I don't have fresh onions. Good for roast, hot dogs, baked beans... and anything else where you wished you had a fresh onion handy. GOLD RELISH 12 large ripe cucumbers (yellow ones okay to use) 12 large white onions 12 large ribs of celery (very clean ones, no dirt ingrained) 1 or 2 bell pepper (one red one adds color interest to relish) ½ c. Kosher salt -------- 3 c. sugar 1 qt. vinegar 2 T. mustard seed 1 c. prepared mustard 3 bayleaf ¼ t. ginger, or juice of 1 finger of ginger -------- a few grape leaves (young green ones), optional - Peel cucumbers; scrape out seeds. - Wash grape leaves, if using. - Cut cucumbers, onions, bell pepper, and celery into cubes (1/4 to 1/2"?) (this is a chunkier relish). - As you chop up veg, place in large bowl for brining period. Periodically , sprinkle with salt and layer in a few grape leaves (if using). Let the vegetables set for about 2 hours. - Rinse the vegetables well with cold water. Drain. Remove grape leaves. - Make the pickling solution. Quickly bring to low simmer, stir to prevent scorching: sugar, vinegar, mustard seed, prepared mustard, bay leaf, and ginger. -- Add the vegetables when the solution is barely simmering, and turn up heat to bring to boil. Continue stirring to prevent scorching. Boil 2 to 5 minutes. (another place you should research modern recipes for time to cook) Remove the bayleaf. - Ladle hot relish into hot, sterilized jars. Seal at once with hot lids and rings. Process in a water bath canner (see below). I use boiling water bath for 15 minutes / 20 minutes for my 1000 plus altitude. Process time should be researched by anyone using this recipe, since it's a very old one and times have changed. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. My reference is an India Relish recipe from Ball that has celery in it. I don't see celery in many recipes, and it seems that celery is considered a rather dirty crop these days, so be sure to clean it well AND process longer than most pickles. If you don't want to process so long, modify recipe to use celery seed. Myself, I like the celery chunks in this recipe.

your onions in the bulk bag looked wonderful. I gave up a long time ago buying onions, potatoes, etc., in pre-set bulk bags because every time there would be 1-3 pieces that have gone bad and the ones around it are pretty iffy as well. I have to buy them loose and individual. I just had to smile on your beautiful onions out of the bag, and give a sigh of envy. God Bless

Funny story.... I also just purchased a bag of onions on sale. My little family of 6 helped me peel, chop and bag them. I like to keep mine in gallon freezer bags as well as dehydrating. Anyhow, my 12 year old son (oldest) was crying from the onions and was cracking jokes anout how they must use onions to make tear gas 😂😂 it was HILARIOUS! My family appreciates everything I do after days like this! My 4 year old was peeling onions and barely affected. She thought it was really fun lol. Onions would be one of my 4 staples to grow as well. God bless!

I admire you so much for doing all those onions..... a lot of work but well worth it. Home economics is a worthwhile subject to study and hard work reaps rewards. Well done to Mrs Volfie👏. I wonder if you know about a channel I used to love. 'Fouch Family', I used to watch them all the time and then they just vanished.... I'm just hoping nothing dreadful happened to them. They lived up in the mountains and were a lovely family.
@OurHalfAcreHomestead4 жыл бұрын
I Remember Fouch Family...not sure where they went. A LOT of channels have not got the time or the energy to jump through the hoops that KZfaq Wants these days..I am just really lucky that I have been doing it long enough to have a solid routine. So some channels are forced to quit long before it becomes viable for them. I had 3 years of solid front end loaded work before I earned my first $100 On KZfaq and they have made me fight for every dime since. Like I said..not everyone can afford that regimen
