This is my guide and technique for making Olympic concrete barbell weights. I cover steps in here about pouring the concrete and extracting the plates. Specs and details of how to construct the forms are included in the ebook in the link below.
EBOOK: payhip.com/b/E7df
Also visit the website to see more:
Concretegainz.com
The concrete used is Quickrete premixed concrete. It already contains pre-measured amounts of gravel, sand and Portland cement and fiber glass. This is what I recommend to use. I also have used steel rebar in some of the earlier sets and have concluded that steel remesh is just as good but a lot cheaper.
I've made over a 100 sets of these weights and have not had any of my personal plates or plates I've sold break. This is with normal care and controlled lifts onto a suitable exercise surface, (i.e. dense foam exercise mats or outside ground etc). Dropping or slamming these plates onto a rock hard surface will most likely result in a break or crack but normal controlled use of these plates will result in them working just fine and getting a great workout!

I had been wondering about doing this and was hoping someone commented about it as I haven't seen anything. Doesn't the concrete need to cure for a while? I know after 72 hours it should be ready to use, but doesn't it continue to cure for a month or so -at this volume? Looks like a gallon of liquid rubber should be. more than enough. How many coats did you use, 4-5?

@@concretegainz368 great video, i independently arrived at most of the same techniques as you. fyi a few tips: 1) since youre doing this on large scale, you may want to look into pond / immersion curing for your plates. keep your plates soaked in water for a few days, it should increase strength significantly. you can use a kiddie pool or a large basin to submerge the concrete in water for some days. 2) you can replace the steel reinforcement with chicken wire. make sure it has at least 1" holes, so that aggregate is allowed to pass freely through the holes. 3) if you want to be fancy, you can use metal pipe instead of pvc. the sound of the metal pipe as the weight is loaded onto a barbell sounds exactly like a real plate.

This is an awesome guide. I made the 10 pound mold to test out before I make the bigger ones. I had an issue where the pvc stuck to the jig. I couldn’t place tape around the jig because the pvc wouldn’t fit over but it fits perfect without tape. Could this be caused by some concrete getting between the pvc and wood essentially glueing those together? Everything else was smooth besides that but I think I will add a releasing agent to make it smoother. I also forgot to sand the pvc but will do that and see if anything changes. Got any tips? Thanks
@concretegainz368
@concretegainz368 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Zach, Thanks for the feedback, and I'm glad you like the book! As for the jig, the water from the concrete will seep into the wood of both the plywood and jig. This should not be a problem except if the jig is very close in size to the inside diameter of the PVC. The water will cause a slight expansion of the wood thus causing it to be stuck inside the PVC. The solution is to make the jig slightly smaller, let it have some wiggle room for when you place the PVC on it. The concrete drying on top or inside of the jig could potentially cause it to stick as well, but its by far not as big of a problem in general. Releasing agents are good to, they can definitely help, but are not always necessary. Hope you get some good weights!

Great video! Thank you . I made some about a week ago and afterwards my father also suggested using fiber glass cement. Exactly what kind of plastic sheet did you use on the bottom? It looks durable.

Good stuff, working with concrete is not difficult i'm a chef and it's a lot like making dough adding water to get the right consistency. Gonna make a barbell with pipe filled with concrete, can't think of anything else, entire gym will be handmade...hmmm, other people are gonna want that too...

physicist here, it's actually a corner, it's a cylinder, it has 3 faces, 2 edges and 2 corners(2 places where 2 faces meet), it has no vertices, but a corner is not necessarily a vertice, the definition of google is: "a place or angle where two sides or edges meet".

Cylinders have corners. Take a cross section and you'll see 4 90 degree angles
