I spoke with a neighbor about this house and they told me it has been abandoned for some time. An elderly man used to live there but was forced to move out due to the foundation sinking. Since then, years went by with squatters living in it and it making the whole neighborhood look bad. It was boarded up and left to rot. So, I thought I would clean it up and make it look a little bit better for everyone that lives around it.

We saw at least one neighbor who will have it easier because of his efforts. That woman on the mobility scooter (around 9:48) will have access to cleared sidewalks on that corner again.

Thanks for helping everyone! Shame on that landlord for not fixing all these things that are their responsibility and making all the neighbors have to worry about it. Bet the landlord was happily taking money from the elderly tenant even though the house was sinking! smh.

IKR! If the house is "sinking" into the basement it's just a matter of time before the house collapses. If the whole lot, basement and house, is sinking then the neighbors need to start complaining to be city. One good heavy downpour and it can start a sinkhole. Not only the landlord but also the city can be liable for that. Can you imagine watching the hole getting bigger and approaching your home! That's scay.

I kinda wonder how many slumlords Spencer has inadvertently helped avoid additional fines by helping out the neighborhoods with his work. It's clear that the positives of his work far outweigh the negatives, but having dealt with terrible landlords in the past I would like to see some of them reap what they sow. Regardless, keep up the great work SB!

Well done, Spencer. That is quite the transformation. What caught my eye in the after shots were two big things. First, the electrical service is still connected in this house. The meter is still there. Second, the walls appear to be in pretty good shape and the roof ridge appears to be true and level. That tells me the footings and foundations under the walls are likely quite serviceable. Growing up where basements are virtually universal, hearing what was said about the structure, it is easy to figure out both what is wrong and how to fix it. It is not a big deal. There will be a beam running down the middle of the length of the house. Chances are it is either undersized or not supported properly. In either case it is not complicated. The owner needs to dig holes for footings then jack the beam back up where it belongs, then install Lally columns to support it. With the help of a few friends it is the work of a couple of weekends and would cost well under $1,000. Considerably less than tearing down that house, never mind building a new one. He is letting money rot by leaving the house in that state. It could be a really lovely little home with some TLC.

I commented months and months ago that the drainage was such an important part of the improvement of the property in addition to pest control and how the property looks. I’m so glad you have been consistently mentioning the drainage improvement. Poor drainage is a safety issue for walkers, drivers, and bike riders and poor drainage can cause flooding into people’s house foundations, garages, gardens, etc. causing a lot of damage. Thank you for continuing to educate people.

Google maps show this house from 2007 to 2022. Over that time, it's changed quite a bit. The roof was fixed at some point, siding was added, etc. At one point (maybe 2015?) it was boarded up. Then it wasn't, now it is again. It looks like the house might have been owned by different people over that 16 year period, and some were motivated to maintain it, while others weren't. Maybe the last owner fell on hard times and couldn't keep up with repairs? A sinking foundation is pretty expensive to fix. There's a rent assisted 55+ apt complex right across the street...I wonder if the elderly tenant was able to find a place there?

Holy cow that sidewalk was so overgrown! I loved that little serpentine section by the corner that made a slight S curve. FANTASTIC JOB! I like how you did this for the neighbourhood and even whoever owns and neglects the place. You don't know the history and the people but just move in and love on them. I know that views bring revenue but I can see that both you and AB have a heart in your work. WELL DONE! I hope you do not see yourself as a loser for battling mental illness...great names like; John Denver and Neil Diamond also battled mental illness. It can come from inherited traits...so it's not a 'personal' failure...just a cross in your life and we ALL have them. If I may add...trimming those ugly trees would have made the ol' sad place 'POP' even more. My take. Health and blessings to you n' yours! :)
