Thanks for the inspiration! I have a VW Golf GTI, so I have less of a problem with air resistance than you do (it is a hatchback) and my bike is much lighter - 150 pound trials motorcycle! So I'm thinking of giving this a try.

Install a rear wing/spoiler on the trunk. Maybe with a DRS system when the bike isn't on there. Bonus is you get more rear downforce. But you might upset the balance and have to offset the additional rear downforce with a front wing. You don't want to end up with too much oversteer or understeer.

So this might help. You have the bar that extends over the bike to lock it into place. Why not build onto that. My suggestion would be that you build a ramp like structure. So a recrangular frame welded onto the down post and then another rectangular frame welded infront of the post and above the trunk. So if standing at the side of the yaris there should be a L shape. Then sheet the frame with a curved "ramp". You could use perspex or thin aluminium. What is nice about this idea is that there is no modifications to your car. When releasing the bike, the "ramp" will come off with the bike clamp.

I like the ingenuity. Good job, you might be just a little too critical on your results. About the only way to attempt to drop the form drag from your bike would be to stow it such that it leans toward or away from the car. That might help some, but not worth the effort in my opinion and no guarantee. Plus if you have to move the bike center of gravity rearward, it will load the hitch attachment to the car just that much more, I wouldn't want to do too much of that....especially if you occasionally bottom the car's suspension off roading.

Do you happen to know the tongue weight rating on your hitch? The hitches I am finding for my car are rated 200 pounds tongue weight. Nice truthful follow-up video. To address the side drag issue, perhaps you could build 2 fairings for the side of the car that hang from the inside of the truck lid and strap them down under the rear quarter panels (or mount them on the bike or rack itself...likewise an air deflector on top of the trunk lid? Of course there will be disappointments because the project is a compromise, but on the upside, overall it looks like a success. Clearly not needing to schlep all your gear from side yard to garage is a bonus and time saver! As I must have commented before, the biggest concern I have is about long term structural integrity of the chassis due to the added load and interface joints of the rack's 3 rails and how this impacts durability of the Yaris. Also short term: crash safety and vehicle dynamics. I am sure you also get some adverse steering dynamics (Yaw effects) from the weight in the back shifting the car's CG (center of Gravity) rearward (to offset this you could add weight to the front of the car, but that's not desirable either). I like the way you modified your front property wall for storing the trailer. Did you have an HOA issue with that?

try loading a heavy bike on it. most cars have a class 2 tow hitch and a downward weight limit on the hitch at 350lbs and pulling weight of ~3,500lbs. my 460lbs motorcycle would likely damage the framing of my car hauling it like this. any bump and it would likely shear a bolt or rip the hitch out of the frame.

Great job on the hauler, innovative system with the strapless tie down, however after reading the comments and seeing how reluctant you are to get rid of your toyota yaris, I will notify you of the saying “If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it” as in if you can’t afford to properly transport your dirt bike with a truck or van, either because of your inability to purchase one or your inability to afford the MPG of a truck or van, perhaps you should consider a different hobby rather than one that requires you to transport your dirt bike on either a home made rack that drastically affects your top speed and fuel economy due to drag, or a sketchy trailer that isn’t supposed to go past 45mpg.

300lbs is NOT going to "Make or Break" a cars structural limits, LMAO............I'm tired of these towing snobs, that think it's the End of the world, for a 3000+lbs car to be exceeded by a tiny amount.....these people are flat out idiots. I agree, trailers suck.....they are Very dangerous, can put you in bad positions Quickly, and require maintenance.

The level of achievement was the pint of the video, but there is always an ass that will watch it and comment.. Your mother never give you the " if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it" talk, so just let you be an asshole... Didn't give you a chance in life to be something else?
