I’ve got my first cans of this amazing wax from WW store!!! Both the soft and hard wax are incredible pleasant to use, and the hard wax has a distinctive honey smell, delightful to use!!!!

Purchased a couple canisters of your soft wax! 🚀 I recently finished my girlfriend's sewing table, made of oak. I finished it with a few coats of BLO but I'm going to see how it turns out with the wax as an extra layer of protection. Thanks!

i have been using this recipe for 50years and wouldn't change it. so cheap to make yourself. one point i would make is, i always have a fire extinguisher handy when cooking up a batch as the mixture is very flammable.

It is no problem getting wax off of a spoon or pot. You just have to carefully avoid spills, drips and above all, getting it in the sink. I use a pot from the kitchen because mice love old pots with beeswax in them (store beeswax in a can or tubberware, they love it too). Once you’ve scrapped it clean(ish) with a spoon, take it outside and put a tea kettle on to boil. The boiling water melts the wax and then you pour it in in the bushes (NOT down a drain). Then, while the pot is still hot, wipe the oily residue with a paper towel. Do the same for metal spoons (or use just wood).

I make my own wax paste with one part of beeswax and three parts of olive oil,and few drops of some essential oil. I love to make wood water resistant,and to intensify colour. Thanks for the advice to use wax for tools.

Watch out for rancidity with non drying plant oils, it makes the wood stink for around five years. I would use quickly or store in fridge and give the smell test each time before applying.

I would suggest to add explanation on how to “cook” mix of bee wax and linseed oil ie temperature, time required etc. it could be very useful especially for some people that live on another side of the planet earth. Thank you.

It might be white spirits there, but denatured alcohol also works well.

Mineral Spirits is called Mineral Terpentine (or Turpentine) in many parts of the world.

If you are melting wax you better have a one use pot as wax never, not ever comes out of a pot. Don’t ask me how I know. It is also very flammable.

Mickleblade: an interesting interpretation. I’m 3 years into beekeeping. Advice I was given “if you want to stay married keep your bee stuff out of the kitchen and have separate pots/utensils for wax rendering.” I’ll stick to that advice after 40 years of marriage. Keep yourself plenty of Mineral Spirits on hand and Good luck. I do like the idea of making your own products. I have some wax I can use. Garage is crammed with bee and woodworking equipment. Time for an overhaul.

Thank you for your videos. Very interesting. Do you know if when you mix in linseed oil and beeswax is there still a risk of fire due to instantaneous combustion on the rags? Or does the beeswax stabilize it?

It will never spontaneously combust but if the conditions are just right (wadded up rag in a tight space) any oil can heat up to the point the rag can catch fire. Even if it is mixed with other things.

I was almost a little disappointed when you used a kitchen knife to scrape off the junk on top of the beeswax…I think a handplane would just LOVE to do that job 😄🫠

To make the wood polishing wax even more versatile you can add salt (plain table salt, mixed in the bees wax during the initial boiling, about a tablespoon per kilogram) and naphthalene (a.k.a. mothballs, dissolved in 99% alcohol - about a teaspoon per kilogram of final mix). These will prevent mold and repel most wood chewing insects. The final wax mix won't smell bad unless it's heated beyond melting point. Mind that naphthalene is poisonous if ingested, so if you have small children you better leave it out and just stick with the salt.

The talk of various ingredients is very helpful. I'd like to hear more of that and less about how to put some wax on some wood which is something we're all very familiar with. Other waxes besides beeswax? Linseed oil and or tung oil, the fellows notion of using salt is very interesting. Possibly a bit of coopernol? That's where we need to learn something. Most of us have rubbed some wax on some wood many times. We don't need help with that. Turpentine versus mineral spirits? Pine resin?

Hey James - one safety question regarding these. Do you need to dry out/dispense of the rags you use this finish on in the same way you have to with BLO due to the presence of the oil in the wax? Or can the rags be reused? Big love from New Zealand - you're responsible for my interest in woodworking - my mother has a few hives so I'll be processing the wax myself and skimming off a few bits of it to make my own finishes. Love your work :D

The soft wax will still polymerize and harden. So generally treat it the same as you would with any oil finish.

Dear Wood by wright, I just made this mixture after seeing your video. The softwax that is. I used turpentine oil instead of white spirits. Cant wait to use it. I do have a question for you. Are rags and towels with this mixture also combustible like rags coverd in linseed oil or turpentine oil?

Sweet. Don't have too much fun. Yes any oil that will polymerize can cause rags to combust in the right conditions. So after using it just laid out flat on the floor until it polymerizes and then you can throw it away.

I also prefer turpentine to mineral spirits and I find it wonderful at keeping a brush soft because it does not Harden like mineral spirits but stays green and will always wash out after storage

Hi! Very interesting video. One question, though. I've been searching for a local beekeeper, but with no luck. Are the beeswax brands found on amazon good for this application? I intend to use the wax for food safe items, like cutting boards and bowls and other related stuff. Anyway thanks for you great content!

A cheap ready source of Beeswax is the toilet seal Rings sold in any hardware store. From 1 to $2 each.

Hey James, I have part of the first batch of the hard and soft waxes that you put up on the store. My question is: Can I thin out the soft wax with more ... to make it liquid like you use in the shop? What would I use for the ...? More boiled linseed oil? I have no-chemical real boiled linseed oil. Or more mineral spirits? BTW, I noticed that you shipped my order UPS 3-day and it took 11 days to get here. I watched the tracking number as it went around and around the midwest.

Ya got to love the USPS. The shipment times they post are never what happens. Sorry about that. To thin it out for better penitration I would use heat. If that is not an option then more mineral spirits.

Boiled linseed oil will polymerize quicker. So it's often used for finishing so you don't have to wait a week or more for the surface to harden. so for my wood finishing waxes I use boiled linseed oil. I also have a couple videos showing how to make your own boiled linseed oil if you want to see that.

Yeah, people would look at me weird when they would see me working on my axe and when it was time for the finish and I would say, 'Now I need to go get some blo so I can finish this'....They would just think I needed some energy to push through until I would explain that BLO was an acronym or abbreviation....(actually im not sure if BLO would be considered an acronym or an initialism but you get it, we will just use the umbrella term 'abbreviation'. You see, I'm a retired grammar nazi ever since I realized that no one, including myself, cared lol

Which is better in the long run? Using a pre-made finish, or building up a layered finish using paste wax?

I'm sorry I'm not quite understanding the question. Are you asking is it better to use a store-bought case wax over a homemade paste wax. You really can't build up a layered finish with paste wax. It's more or less there to seal in an existing finish or fill any of the pores still open. The Pace wax goes on top of whatever other finish you are planning on using as opposed to it being its own finish.

When you first put the beeswax granules in the pot on the first step do you add any water at all or just heat and melt the wax down with no water or anything else added? What temp did you melt it at? (If no exact temp can you tell me what level I would set the temp dial on the stove top that are numbered 1-10?

It doesn't matter if you add the water first or the wax first. Some people like to get the water boiling and then add the wax but then you're guessing it how much water you want to add some people prefer to add the wax and that way they can add the appropriate amount of water as they mix it in. It's completely up to you and really doesn't make much difference. As the temperature you just want it to be below boiling but yet hot enough for the wax to be liquid. So usually somewhere around 150 to 180 Fahrenheit. I normally start with it on high heat until it gets up to temperature and then I bring it back down to something around a four or three. It all depends on how big the pot is.

One more question, just to clarify(I'm going to make a blo beeswax finish this evening) So you add water in WITH the beeswax or in a separate pot with the beeswax in another pot inside the pot of water. I guess I can try to make more sense by asking, Is the water actually touching the wax or is it just heating it by surrounding the container the wax is in? Thank you for the quick reply as always! I love your channel and it's one of the channels I watch regularly not only for the ocean of knowledge, tips and ideas but I also watch the videos for entertainment even if the particular video isn't about a project that I'm working on at the time because I always learn something. Is the bees wax measured by weight or volumes? Example, melt the wax, and measure the liquids?

eather way works fine. The measurements are really ball park. Generally I do it by weight.

yes. it will not last as long as a varnish but would be far better for the bees then varnish would be.

Hi,so when applying soft wax,Blo/white spirits and besswax, to wood finish I discard the rag? If rag is stored in closed container with wax,it might ignite?

No if the container is sealed then there is not enough oxygen for the comical prosses to happen. most of the time with past waxes there is not enough of a reaction for it to cause a problem even in prefect circumstances. but prefect circumstances is several wadded up rags in the bottom of a trash can. just enough oxygen to let the polymerization of the oil happen fast, but not enough air movement to cool the rags.

I heard that beewax will gum everything and should not be use for the lubrification of tools and instade using paraffine wax. Is it wright?

I don't know who would tell you that. Paraffin wax is a harder wax but they both have very similar characteristics and lubrication.

It will gum up on electric motorized tools. When it gets hot it starts turning into a rubber cement type gel. So great on hand auger bits, gummy on electric drill bits. Great on hand saws, a mess on a band saw blade.

Beeswax works fine on drill bits, not to say paraffin won’t work better. Don’t use any wax where it might get in anything electrical.

You're pretty you can use any oil you want. I know some people who use olive oil. A paste wax is just a wax and an oil mixed together. Any wax you want, any oil you want.

Very good question, and I find that tongue oil sold for Wood Finishing is already polymerized and will cure very slowly. It has various additives and dryers so that it will harden eventually if applied very thin

@@douglundy5755 There’s a polymerized tung oil that’s heated and contains no driers. It’s made by Sutherland Welles and there’s also a version sold by Lee Valley. Because it’s heated, they say it is thicker so they thin it with mineral spirits or citrus thinner but it’s supposed to dry harder and faster.

No. Rubio Monaco calls itself hard wax. But it's not really a paste wax even though people seem to think it is. It's its own chemical fun thing. Paste wax is just wax and oil and sometimes a thinner. There's nothing else in it to help it cure faster, or Bond longer or become more durable.

I didn't. I have two crock pots that are dedicated to making waxes. And the big green pot is dedicated to rendering beeswax.

The wax will only be as glossy as the surface that is applied to. Most of the time. If a wax needs to be glossy, they mix it with a polyurethane. And the polyurethane is what is glossy.

you can use whatever finish you want. they all have different glosses that they can reach.

Yes. Middle spirits evaporates the entirely. That's what makes it a great thinner.

I have used it a couple times. and it is seriously good stuff. I generally prefer Rubio Monocoat a bit more, but it is really close between those two.

Wood By Wright I just received a 2nd generation of the product...seems to be a little less finicky in the application...requires a very thin application...so unlike linseed oil...I do use the scotch bright white pads to apply...dries pretty quickly...
