This video is all about Home Networking Basics. These are the fundamentals of any Home Network from modem to router to switch. FYI - I accidentally referred to NAT as Network Area Translation and its actually Network Address Translation. Sorry. Network Address Translation (NAT) is a process that enables one, unique IP address to represent an entire group of computers. Thanks for the information. Been a follower of your videos and learned a lot through them :). We are building a new home and I selected the ONQ panel to be at the laundry room thinking it would give me enough space for future expansions especially for a POE camera system and to drive wifi APs through a network switch (pardon if I am completely using the wrong terminology here, I am a noob and this is all I gained from KZfaq videos like yours). Today I realized that the low voltage guy placed it in a storage closet under the stairs which isn't air-conditioned or has a vent/window. Do you think it would be ok? How hot do these things get? On the positive side, it would give me a small room to play with this stuff and I can put a rack in front of it. I am only worried about ventilation and keeping the stuff not to get overheated. Greatly appreciate your expert opinion. Thank you!

Thanks, this video helped me understand it little more.. *Question: How to check the max speed for a DSL cable (RJ11) in your home?* Note 1: Apparently supports up to 250/25 Mbps Note 2: We have a pretty fast connection for our area, but we are getting like 60-80% of max speed (while connected directly into modem/router combo - PC to Combo = RJ45)..since we have from Vodafone.. either 100/10 or 100/20 But we're getting around 60-65/10-20 Mbps..

Thanks for this. I was hoping you'd address a problem I'm having but it didn't come up in the video. I plugged all the Cat 6 cables in the box that go to all the rooms to the switch but the lights are not turning on for those cables. I know the switch is working because if I plug a laptop to one of the ports, the activity lights come on, but the lights for all the other ports that go to the rooms are not lighting up. I even went to one of the rooms and plugged my laptop to the port and didn't get any internet. Was hoping you might tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Great basic video! Each time I watch one of these, I learn more. Can you tell me what cabinet you have? It looks like a larger door to help accept bigger devices and to be plastic to allow fire wireless. I have a Pace modem from AT&T that will not fit into my existing cabinet, a Tablo DVR and wish to replace the cabinet with a larger one. Also, the router settings are hard to read in the video so I can’t see all of the settings. Can you enlarge those or include them in your log? Thanks!

Great beginner video. Thanks for posting. I have a large home (2300 sqft) with a single Wi-Fi router with several dead spots in the house. My house has a hub in the master closet with Ethernet cables to each room. What Id like to do is set up a single network with multiple Wi-Fi devices throughout the house to get a good single for each of the dead spots. I was considering a mesh system but I want to take advantage of the ports I have throughout the house. I was thinking of a large Wi-Fi router in the master closet (like what you have in the video), but also some additional devices to extend the network in a few of the rooms. It seems like there’s products out there but I don’t know what the best ones are. You link to a video on a netgear wireless access point in one of your comments that looks like it’ll do the trick. Any suggestions?

Hey man thanks for all the videos. I’m having issues all over. You’d probably have a couple laughs if you saw my setup. I have att fiber, modem/router combo. Ethernets goes to my unmanaged poe+ switch, a old netgear nighthawk (i turned off the WiFi) I just needed the Ethernet ports.. also my office. 5gbs port I haven’t used because nothing in my house has a need for it. My unmanaged Steamemo PoE+ works for my ip cameras but not my crypto miner. I have a 5g helium miner that I’m trying to get on Ethernet it will only work directly into the ISP router. I think I should just start over. I have a limited budget. What do I do?
@UltimateTechHub
@UltimateTechHub 2 жыл бұрын
First of all I don't like modem router combos. I would get a fiber modem (ONT) and get a separate router. This may solve your mining issues. It sounds like you have a lot of hardware. I would keep it simple as possible. Consider a managed switch to setup vlans and port security.

This is very helpful information. I do have a question that's been bugging me. A bit of info on how I have mine setup: So i have Xfinity modem w/ 4 ports available. I've disabled the wifi on the xfinity modem/router combo (this modem isn't in bridge mode either). Now i have 1 ethernet coming from the xfinity modem going into my linksys Velop mesh (this device runs my network use now). The velop has 2 available ports which 1 is connected to a 8 port switch. Now all the wired device in my house is connected to that switch. My question is - is it possible to connect from modem straight to my switch then switch to router and still have all my device "talk" to each other? (like plex media server, transfer files, etc..) Thanks in advance.
@UltimateTechHub
@UltimateTechHub 2 жыл бұрын
You cannot connect a modem to a switch. A switch cannot preform DHCP so only 1 port would work if you tried that setup. Its modem to router to switch. Of course I have a video on that very subject! I have my modem going to my Linksys router and wifi however I'd like to add the TP-Link Deco for a new mesh network so that smart home stuff connects to the 2.4ghz better and my wife can connect to the 5ghz on it as well. Can I just connect the TP-Link to the Linksys router port? I would like to keep the old Linksys 5ghz for the "guest network" as that is one thing the TP-Link doesn't do well. Thanks in advance.

Yes you should be able to connect to the router. You may need to run the Deco as an access point, or as a Mesh Node or as a secondary router. It really depends on the features of the router. If you have any issues just send me an email. Thank you for watching.
