In this week’s Living In episode, we take a look at a 1,636 square-foot, three-bedroom condo located along the scenic East Coast Park.
From the start, the homeowners expressed their love for the ocean and their desire to incorporate it into their home. To achieve this, Max strategically placed a mesmerising reef tank near the entrance foyer. As the owners return home in the evening, the gentle ripples and soothing ambiance of the tank create a spa-like experience, infusing the space with a sense of tranquillity.
The living room, characterised by its simplicity, allows the lime wash background paint to serve as the centrepiece. To add visual interest, Max designed a unique TV console, combining contrasting materials such as concrete and wood. This thoughtful mix of textures breathes life into the room and complements the Wabi-Sabi aesthetic that the homeowners wished to achieve.
In line with their love for coffee, Max dedicated a dry pantry area to satisfy the homeowners' morning ritual. The custom-made dining table boasts round legs and curved edges, harmonising perfectly with the Wabi-Sabi concept. The choice of a linear wooden log as the dining table's lighting fixture further accentuates the nature-inspired atmosphere.
The kitchen space was ingeniously designed to conceal a structural column, making it both functional and visually appealing. Max introduced a fish tank, kitchen space, sink unit, bench, and storage spaces around it, seamlessly integrating these elements into the overall design. A triangular layout formed by the fridge, sink unit, and cooker hob ensures optimal efficiency for daily use.
To maximise the breathtaking view from the balcony, the original ventilation window was removed and replaced with a frameless glass curtain system. This transformation provides the homeowners with an unobstructed panorama, complemented by a comfortable hammock where they can unwind and stargaze at night.
In the common bathroom, the sink unit was relocated to an easily accessible and efficient feature island. Positioned strategically, the sea can be glimpsed while using the mirror. The microcement finish on the walls and ceiling, along with the Dune-coloured tile flooring, creates a cave-like ambiance, offering a truly relaxing bathing experience.
The master bedroom showcases a stylish cement floor finish, reminiscent of the homeowners' previous rental unit. To add warmth and contrast to the space, a darker shade of wood was chosen for the laminated wardrobe..
In response to the owners' request for a more interactive space, an aperture was introduced in the master bathroom. This innovative addition enhances the connection between the couple and provides a unique focal point. With microcement finishes and a soothing colour scheme, the master bath exudes a calm and serene ambiance.
To address the lack of a view in the study room, Max skillfully hacked down a portion of the wall, framing a captivating vista that extends from the living room to the dining area. This thoughtful inclusion reflects the homeowners' desire for a unit that captures both an inspiring view and a prime location.
Special thanks to interior designer Max and the homeowner for opening up their home to us.

This is not Wabi Sabi at all! “Generic Muji Modern” is a more appropriate term to describe the decor theme/feel😏

You dunno meh, nowadays wabisabi no longer means imperfection. It means textured plastered walls with micro-cement surfaces.

Priceless sea view. The hammock is a good idea but setting up high stool and table at the balcony will be a bliss for morning coffee and evening drink.

The ceiling details are interesting and the hero of the space is indeed the reef tank. Nicely done from one Interior Designer to another.

Absolutely love this home!!! Everything is so well thought out and it's a perfect example of making the space work for you. The house extends beyond the floor plan and into the distant ocean view. Land and Sea combine to create this marvel of a home that looks not only beautifully designed but lived in as well. Great job with this concept and props to the designer Max, who in my opinion managed to encapsulate sophistication in simplicity. 10 / 10 will get him to design my future homes if I can afford him!!!!

Goodness, what a healthy, beautiful space. Only reservation is in providing private grooming space for guests - perhaps a sink in the guest room?

Yes, I agree, the guests lack bathroom privacy. I wouldn't want to brush my teeth in the living room! That sink area is inadequate for applying makeup, shaving, blow drying hair, etc. And, as a guest, am I suppose to use the toilet, go to the living room sink to wash my hands, then return to bathroom to shower, go back to the living room sink to dry my hair, apply my makeup, etc. And how to coordinate these maneuvers with my husband? No, while the apartment is lovely, it's dysfunctional.

There are just too much symmetry and it looks too pristine to see wabi sabi aesthetic in the design. Just another case of trying hard to fake imperfection while making it looks perfect. If a design doesn’t fit into any particular theme, there is no need to force fit it into something it is not.
