A year's worth of food takes a tremendous amount of time and energy to harvest, process, and preserve but we couldn't imagine it any other way. In today's tour, we show you what's on our shelves, in our freezer and the bulk food we store in our conex.

I shared this video with my wife for her to watch at her leisure. I grew up in a farmhouse on the US Canada border. We had a "truck garden" which we utilized for 75% of our fresh and canned fruits and veggies. We had a dozen special apple trees that we were told by the previous owner of the house were planted by the actual man "Johnny Appleseed." We had a trout stream running north to south, I personally kept 1 shelf of our upright freezer full of trout. Deer, rabbit, squirrel, grouse, the occasional pheasant... Woodcock, dove... We were never out of food.

When I saw your pic of hooligan I recognized them as a type of smelt. Growing up on a dirt farm in Washington we made use of “free” food. That meant we would get clams, oysters and crab in season (before you had to pay for permits) as well as hunting. Also, every February we would load the giant smelt box that was made to fit in the back of the 14 passenger van with the last seat removed and all 6 of us kids would bundle up and pile in the van at 4:30 a.m. for the long drive down to the area where everyone went to dip. The boys and dad would take turns wading out into the freezing cold river to dip. They would empty the nets into buckets which us girls had to haul up to the van to empty in the box until full. Then we would make the journey back home to transfer them to baby bathtubs or stock containers before heading back down to get another load. When we got back home the cleaning would begin which meant our hands would stay cold all day. With such a boring long job kids will find a way to entertain themselves and eventually we would be shooting fish guts at each other which of course meant fish guts were on the walls, the floor, etc. finally mom made us clean them on the back porch which made the job more miserable. The fish would be frozen in 5 lb batches and a lot of them would be smoked. Many things I didn’t care for doing as a child I developed an appreciation for as an adult. I am 65 and still waiting to regain appreciation for anything associated with smelt. More power to you. 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢

I started watching this channel about March of last year and you guys have inspired me to make some really massive changes in the way I feed my family. I created a Permaculture food environment in my backyard, began foraging for mushrooms and fruit from abandoned trees. This year I grew enough greens, garlic, and sweet potatoes that we haven’t had to buy any from the store, and won’t have to going forward. Thank you so much for sharing the practical sides of food production. Blessings.

It's kind of overwhelming to see it all at once, but then I remember that you two just chip away at it all year. You go out and harvest berries and freeze them. I am from the rural south where we canned and preserved our own meats and vegetables when I was really, really younger but I don't ever recall us having as much as you have and certainly not as varied of a selection. Now, and for most of my adult life, if kroger doesn't can it, I dont have it. It is good to see that spirit of self reliance still exists in our society.

I’ve gardened for years but until I saw your HUGE brussel sprouts, I had no idea they grew in a tall stalk like that. I’m going to try to grow them now!

You need to make a calendar that marks the seasons, where you live, for each species of fish for fishing, and the same for hunting. Do you hunt deer or elk? You take such beautiful pictures, I'm sure a calendar would be a great success! Also, could you do a video where you answer viewer questions while you make food? I'm curious to know how you met, how old you are, does family visit, do you go visit family, and are you planning to have children? We've invested a lot of time watching you make great improvements to your home lot, purchase a cabin and another piece of land. It's natural to wonder about you. You both work so hard and share tips and tricks easily. Thank you for taking us on this ride with you!

When I was younger and working off grid at cow camps we created a window box to use as a refrigerator. Great for storing stews, roasts, etc stored overnight.

Here's a tip that absolutely changed the storage of my jars I loosely put the bands on that way there is room for the lid to pop if something goes bad in Is and the bands bear the weight of stacking jars So the seals don't get compressed also It gets rid of bands everywhere and I don't mean the rock bands lol

All that stored food made me hungry. That pic with Arielle in the greenhouse with the sprig of Basil in her hair was calendar worthy.

You both are well experienced in a variety of Preserved foods and outdoor projects, gardening and preparing, repairs, and fixing things to make it throughout the year. It's enjoyable watching you both on KZfaq.

Love it! Most people just go buy their food and tend to waste alot of it. MN here, zone 4. We have a good size garden and try to grow, can, dehydrate and freeze everything we grow. We do get meat from the store on occasion, but we also bought a hog and half a beef last year from a farmer not too far from us. The last of all that got canned recently. No hunted meat for us this year but we will be ok and still have two weeks for archery season left. I think when we grow and hunt for our food we appreciate it more and take more care in preparation and there is little to no waste. Its nice to see others doing the same as we do here! Thanks for sharing!
