In this street interview in Honiara, we gather opinions on the controversial topic of benefit sharing in the mining industry in the Solomon Islands. With investors taking 97% of the profits, and the landowners and government sharing just 3%, hear what the people have to say about this division of wealth and its impact on their community.

I'm from New Ireland Province in Papua New Guinea. Whilst I agree with the BSA approach however the percentage should be raised. 60/40 is a way forward to negotiate for a win/win outcome. Government can only be entitled to tax from both parties.

I don't understand why the past government hasn't address this issue. This a serious concern for the government of the day to review this current act as soon as possible. Please Smoky Rodo review this act.

You should ONLY ask provinces where mining takes place like Ysabel, Renbel and Guale people. They can speak their mind and their experiences.

Hi owen...my views: review the mining act to increase the landowners shares to 40%....then include a mandatory shareholding by the land owning group...so that the first royalty payment goes back to the company as shares...by the landowners.....land owners need to have a business mindset.....subsiquent royalty payments then goes to a land owners trustee account, then build these funds at a bank...do not payout to individuals of the tribe...untill dividents are paid at the end of each financial year... Also allow value added processing in country....no shipping of ore to oversease .so that SIG can get a more accurate tax figures....

Let us analysis what George Vari's expressed. He talked on experience. This is serious when resources own get very little out of the resourse. Agree for the govrt to have the tax and landowners and company share the profit. More, also change then logging percentage. Its outdated. Oh Kadere Part boost about this during their campaign. Hope they do something serious about this. Nogud oketa baka ba, dodoa oketa nomoa campaign ba daenao.

Not enough. The Act must be reviewed..(BSA.) Why is the BSA in the Act has not been reviewed for such a long time?

The question is, who write the acts or the policies then? It's clearly a day light robbery on our own resources. Government of the day need to think seriously about this and take steps to amend the act ASAP! This is just a pure example of the current exploitative model of economy we have.

Foreign investment is a problem, end of story..Look at Rippel as a perfect example..The government and its pipol are left to foot the bill, when investors walk away with bulk of it while resource owners are left with nothing and usually disputes continue ovam benefit sharing land ownership etc. investors gone, we're stuck with environmental n social impacts, no results no benefits, nothing to show for. The question we need to ask ourselves is, Does foreign investmen beneficial to us or is it just just problems than benefits?

Need to review the BSA act,it really shows that we resource owners does not have rights to our resources ,our government of the day should try to solve this issue, actually we need to review the foreign law which causes problem for our country, how if we resource owners gets 97% and mining gets 3% , how will they fill, they will not want it.

The Act must be reviewed and amended. Landowners should have a share of 51% and the investors have the remaining which is 49% ,the government gets its revenue on tax. Only then the Landowners can take control of their resources. The first and foremost thing for the government to do is to return all the PE titles back to the original Landowning groups around the country so that they have the legal rights to operate their development plans on thier lands accordingly.... 🤔

Well if Australians, Westerners or Colonisers draft the act at the first place we expect their greed over locals. The first two gold mining companies to operate Gold Ridge are Australians. No suprises here and they continue to position their Advisors (white people) in major ministries in the Solomon Islands government to draft policies, plans and strategies that suits thier agenda, benefits and not for the benefit of Solomon Islanders. Now, in Solomon Islands, the so called NGOs are on the rise from the US, Australia & others to drive thier governmet imperialism and control of resources.

Why continue to vote same leaders then? Do more awareness with your own people. The government has its own interests, and the only way to change that is not to vote for them.
