We share the family construction project of building the hydroponic greenhouse from the ground up. Hear from all of us about the whole process, and Doug gives some tips we learned along the way and things that worked for us. We did almost all of this project ourselves, including the head house production/processing building.
It started in summer 2013 with Doug breaking ground for the head house. Once we got that started, we moved on to setting the posts for the greenhouse, getting the cement aisles in, and securing the reservoir tank in the ground. Doug made an awesome invention for getting the NFT support posts in and another one for getting the plastic covering over the greenhouse easily. We came across a few hurdles, but with Doug and Katy's construction background, we were able to figure it all out. After a year and half, in January 2015, Katy seeded her first crop. It was very exciting!
Here is the greenhouse heating and cooling video I said I would link.

We hope you enjoy seeing the build story, and please put any questions in the comments. I will try to get to as many as I can. Thanks for watching!

Wow great job. I read a book once called the Broken Heart Buffalo Farm where the owner said that being a farmer means that you will have know all the trades otherwise it would be too expensive to run the farm. This video sure showed the number of trades that Doug knew. He had to work concrete, sheet metal, capentry, electrican and plumbing. He sure save more than a pretty penny for this job but needed a lot skills. Respect.

Great job guys. I just ran across your video and watched the entire thing. I'll soon be putting up a similar size greenhouse in Ecuador on a private ranch. The owner wants to see it work and then has promised to fund a humanitarian project in a number of large cities (Bogota, Guayaquil, Medellin, Lima, San Jose, etc.) The plan is to sell the produce to grocery stores and restaurants with take 100% of the profits and give it to people in need. I will admit that I know enough to be 'dangerous' and would be interested in talking to you and making a trip to see your operation in person to make sure I can recreate something similar. I've been watching a lot of videos on the subject and was thinking of doing the geothermal system to capture the 55 degrees of ground heat to keep the heating bills down. I'm probably going to do raised beds but your system of only using water is very interesting. What would be the best design of greenhouse I could build? @@michaelpye5972 I don’t think I’ve heard of black garlic. What is it like? We have a couple different kinds of garlic in the ground right now.

We are neighbors 😁 It does take time doing all of the daily and weekly jobs in the greenhouse, but it is very rewarding and a great work environment.

Thanks for sharing the creation of the greenhouse. It is truly impressive. I wonder what it would cost to build one today. It would interesting to see an analysis of return on investment. How many years would it take to recover the cost of building it? I have been interested in hydroponics to grow food for several years. I finally got an Aerogarden for my desktop. It is nice to have fresh greens in the winter. I would love to own and operate a greenhouse similar to yours one day.

Of course and thank you! We are considering doing a financial video or talking about it in a livestream. Doug and Katy have all of the numbers. I love my little NFT system and have seen the Aerogardens. I agree about the fresh greens. Makes me happy to see them growing when it's 0° outside. I hope you get to do your dream someday! -Devon

This looked like a really fun project. Lots of hard work though. Congrats to all of you. What size is your head house? Also how far is the head house from the greenhouse? How wide is the control tunnel? Looking to eventually do one myself. Thanks.
@HomegrownPassion
@HomegrownPassion 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! I want the head house is 40x50', but I'd have ask Doug for sure. The head house is only 10 or so feet or so away so that's how long the control tunnel is. It's probably 6 feet wide. Not big at all which is why we love having the extra space in the head house. I recommend giving yourself lots of work area if you can. - Devon

Really great project of the greenhouse system. Your Dad is a very methodical worker in the detail of the build. Looks like a ton of research went into this. Very impressive. Do you have an alarm on the sump pump in case it fails. It is an electric motor with a switch is why I ask. I guess there was no way to put in drain tile to a lower site to empty.
@HomegrownPassion
@HomegrownPassion 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! We do not have an alarm, but that would probably be a good investment. There is a small river right behind the greenhouse and we are in a valley which keeps the water table high. I'll have to show how close the river actually is sometime.
