The fact that Homie wanted to express actual empathy for Ryan (gift giving) when he thought that Ryan was upset about not getting his chance at solo glory is such an excellent portrayal of narcissism. Oftentimes people think that narcissism involves having no empathy for others, but this is not true. Narcissists can feel extreme empathy when they can relate another person's suffering to their own. This is what Homie was doing when he was trying to console Ryan, thinking that Ryan wanted all the glory (a sentiment thay Homie could relate to very well), but when he realized Ryan was upset for a reason wholly unfathomable to him, he immediately retracted all empathy.

Perfect explanation

“That’s what you’re upset about?” He focuses on metrics instead of individuals because it’s true you can’t save everyone but instead of stopping there he needed to take *any* responsibility off of his shoulders. I think about how many saves this guy had to do and I’m sure a part of it is the emotional impact of the numbers if it hit him. He can’t be perfect, sure, but the way he chooses to understand it changes who he is. Hood sun says he can never do it again. Saving people, failing to save people, is traumatic. It has to be their every day lives it’s what they were made for in his dads eyes. Home Lander was made to be a US Weapon. Ryan was just raised to be a boy. He had a choice a bit. Homelander has never known a life where he can say no and walk away and be normal.
