You can notice how Butchers lasers are more thick and less focused, he's also shouting and struggling to keep his head straight while Johnny boy with more experience is not only able to control his lasers and focus them on one point, but also kneed them in so he woulda won if it wasn't for Soldier Jit

Maybe, but homelander isn't exactly calculating. He's a child, who acts first and thinks later in a lot of cases. When he lasers someone they die, he doesn't normally have to think about it past that. It's not surprising to me he just wouldn't pay any attention to butcher after the laser

I’ll always love the way he asks “What have you done?” with just a twinge of a smile. They’re enemies no doubt, but I’m not unconvinced that Homelander enjoys having someone around who not only can but will stand up to him and give him a bit of a challenge.

Fun fact On the set Karl Urban decided to improvise and fired a laser from his eyes at the Homelander, Anthony Stark's surprised reaction was real. The director decided to keep it in the film.
