I'm a 55 yr old man on disability and with the prices of rent where I live, it's becoming so difficult to get by. I've been contemplating using my car to live "out of" for the past couple of yrs now. I know that you can't have your vehicle as a physical address, so I'd have to figure out how to have a physical address and yet not have to be there full time too. Not sure how to do that honestly. I have a disability income of just over $1300 per month so I know I could live off of that amount if out of my car; and probably fairly easy too; but this man truly is an inspiration of just how easy it can be. My car is a 2005 Buick LaCrosse with about 150,000 miles on it but runs good. With my 5'9" 300 lb frame, it is doable even. I'm thinking tent for sleeping and lounging outside, and car for mainly driving. Can I do it?? Yes, I got a little fear not knowing people out there too.

I am lucky that I still own a little bit of land and an old shack in the eastern mountains of Tennessee. I love to spend my Summers here gardening and dehydrating and canning lots of the food that I eat. In the winters I head out to warmer areas and I'm camping using a Chevy Spark which is slightly smaller than his Honda Fit. But I took the back seats totally out just unbolted them which gives me lots of extra room. I do not sleep in my car I have a really nice all season Kodiak 9 x 8 tent. I also carry a cot. At 71 years old I require a few more Comforts than sleeping in the back of the car. Plus, as men get older sometimes we have prostate issues causing us to have to get up and pee several times a night. I find it difficult to get in and out of a small car to pee but my tent is large enough to stand up and I use a small tide bottle To pee in during the night. I admire this guy for making things work for him. I cannot afford a camper or a large van either. I have sold this old shack and farm and kept a lifetime Dowry and live off of my social security. The only thing he must do is try to improve his diet. When he can and is close enough to a store he needs to eat more fresh vegetables and fruit. Canned pinto beans Etc is a ton of protein. Where he does not have to have ice and Refrigeration. I do not carry or use an ice chest. I have lots of dehydrated foods that I make here on my farm plus I buy canned goods that do not require refrigeration. Thanks for sharing this and good luck to him.

I agree about his diet. Penny wise and pound foolish is eating cereal and cookies and counting on vitamin pill to provide nutrition. Buy beans, seeds, lentils, etc. He will end up compromising his health. Lisa Dawn? I think is the name of the woman who did 2 videos on eating for 10 dollars a week , one shopping at Dollar Tree and the other at Aldi's. Would love getting 45 MPG, though!

@@ridelocalride I don't believe it is "judging" to question the $200 per month. One cannot live on $200 per month and the reason it does not add up is other forms of income are not included. If I live in my mother's basement, don't pay rent and eat off of her table, watch her TV, let her buy my clothes, fill my gas tank and pay my auto insurance then I suppose it could be said my monthly budget is less than $200 per month. But I question anyone who tells me they live on such a sum. If I'm judging, it is to say you are presenting us with a video that is misleading at best.

It is entirely possible to live off of $200 per month while living in a car. If you haven't done it before or experienced it before, it may be difficult to see how this could be possible. However, car camping/nomad life is entirely customizable and some people spend much more.

He sleeps in the box for warmth. He also goes to the pantry to help with cost. Have you ever sleep in your car?

Why yes I have slept in the car and I've also been homeless but when you have a car that's Mall and if you cover your windows and put some curtains there and a couple of sleeping bags and blankets you can stay quite warm I know this cuz I've done it several times like he says he does have money but his budget himself only for $200 a month catchy car payments on that are pretty expensive oh well as long as he's comfortable

Actually he is very safe. Most people don't understand because they are constantly trying to build wealth and never stop for happiness in the moments. Its a community that's growing especially after what happened in 2020. His remote income is to fund this new life adventure. God forbid but if you found out you were going to die tomorrow would you change what you do today? Live each day as if its your last.

He must be rolling around with no car insurance to be doing this for 200 a month. Gas alone would cost that in a month if he's not sitting still.

He pays his car insurance year in advance. He moves very little and uses his bike to get around. He stays in Yuma in Winter and travels north in summer.

I think viewers might be more interested in hearing the back stories of these people and how they ended up homeless, more so than how they're configuring their puny cars to accommodate berthing, storage, sh*t-taking, personal hygiene challenges, etc. No disrespect, but this dude is clearly too young to be legitimately retired with any kind of income stream coming from a pension account, ROTH IRA, 401k plan, etc., and I'd venture to guess that he's receiving some sort of public assistance stipend, or social security at the youngest possible age eligibility, which pays the lowest amount. I hope by the time the dead of summer rolls around, that he finds some shade or cooler climate somewhere else because Yuma gets unbearably hotter than hell.
@ridelocalride
@ridelocalride 3 жыл бұрын
That makes sense. I will align my questions to get how they became homeless (not a choice) or a nomad (a choice). Thanks for your feedback.

@@ridelocalride Thanks, and you're welcome. Clearly, there's way more to this dude's back story than what viewers are taking as face value from the video. This dude clearly looks employable, and it makes no sense at all as to why (besides the warm climate) he chose, of all places, a $h*t-hole like Yuma to live out of his car; especially out in the middle of friggin nowhere. He never mentions why or how he became homeless, and was very vague as to the reason he left his brother's home after 10 months of bivouacking there. This would make a much better human interest story if we knew the progression of his life and how he ended up in his predicament. What was he doing for a living? What are his job skills now? Does he have a family or dependents? Is he running from the law or financial obligations like spousal and/or child support that he's in arrears on? There are more and more younger age-group folks in this predicament who look very employable to most people, but are resigning themselves to living off the grid out of their vehicles like this. Instead of interviewers asking typical closing questions like "What are your three biggest wishes?", I think viewers would be a hell of a lot more interested in questions like, "What regrets do you have in financial and employment decisions you made that caused your demise and homelessness?" Perhaps you could change up the theme of your videos to reflect more about these colossal failures, and less about how to make up a car to sleep in. I'd be willing to bet that you would get more viewers and subscribers.
