Homeless Joe: Road To Recovery [INSIGHTS]

Last we heard from Joe, the infamous viral sensation, he was in "Texas." Back around October. That’s truly all we knew.
About a month ago, Elite Daily writer, Dan Scotti, got a friend request from Joseph Slaney on Facebook. When he clicked on the “accept” button, what he saw shocked him. It was Slaney, in the flesh, the real deal - verified through a set of vintage, unduplicatable Slaney selfies recently posted to his own wall. There were some grammatical technicalities, but it was oddly articulate; he thanked Dan for “saving his life.”
He said he was five months clean, and he couldn't have done it without us. He told me he was living in Ingram, Texas at a sober home with a bunch of other former addicts. He boasted a new nine-to-five job, but he didn’t sound arrogant, just proud of the strides he had made.
The Elite Daily Video Team jumped on a flight to San Antonio, set on a mission to see what’s really good with (formerly) Homeless Joe.

Mine too! Looking at the homeless people around my city is so sad. He was right in his previous programs where he said "To not do drugs while your homeless is the ultimate depression". He didn't say it like that word for word but the point is still the same. Its easy though to help the pretty boys with swagger, when you truly want to help and care for everyone that's growth; the true definition of humanity.

@Original1Thor
@Original1Thor 7 жыл бұрын
Horst Reinhardt sometimes it happens when you don't even realize; the first time I OD'd was when I was 15 I was too young and stupid to wake up, it's been 6 years and I'm just now realizing how I wished I made different decisions with my life, not to say I'm in a bad position like this guy but it's difficult to come to your problems especially when they're sitting right there in front of your face. It's just they're always there so you don't notice it because it falls into the background and looks normal
@horstreinhardt5023
@horstreinhardt5023 7 жыл бұрын
Didn't mean to come off as douche-baggy. Fully understand how one problem, that seems more bearable, if often used to blanket 'other' problems. Hard to blame someone for wanting to escape but, at the same time, one has to ask himself, "how do I want to live the rest of my life?" (personally, not as a slave to the past).
@Original1Thor
@Original1Thor 7 жыл бұрын
Horst Reinhardt not douchy at all. Thanks for responding, I appreciate you. and I agree too, 18 is a lot, there is something going on that is deliberate, for destruction of the self or others around him, whether this individual and peek through the blinds and find out what's really going on to make him like that; I like how you put it 'slave to the past', it got me doing some honest reflection, sometimes I compulsively think about negative things from my past that's been handicapping my growth... but forreal this guy is the ultimate douche. I know dope heads and needle-freaks, they're the worst people ever they will lie to your face and hurt you and not even give a fuck because right after they do you wrong they completely forget about it. A friend of mine i befriended is like this and it's one of the worst things up there with genocide for sure. Take the same time of mental. I'll sit in a room with the guy and he'll find a way to use me and it upset me so much that one time I was just sitting there crying like crazy right in front of him like I was 5 again and he just sat there looking at me high, what a crushing feeling. You're always told to stay away from people like that but sometimes you gotta learn lessons on your own, nothing no one tells you will stop ya, curiosity I suppose.... hope ya don't mind i used this to get some heat off my chest, it seems like I can't talk to anyone about these things nowadays, except the junkies themselves. My friend from high school got really mad at me when I told him and my other friend shamed me and made me feel guilty. Sucks cuz I really need that human-to-human I did something terrible and i just need ya to be there while i cry and you not judge me for a second, let the world slow down, and find myself so I can take my bearings and pick myself up by the boot straps so someone doesn't have to n move on from there... o well, just stick to weed and psychedelics. Those are the good ones. Any powder or pharmaceuticals will either ruin your life or your kidneys and liver, health, if it doesn't steer you off course from your responsibilities
@horstreinhardt5023
@horstreinhardt5023 7 жыл бұрын
There's a very heavy and convuluted grey area in these cases. When I mentioned "shouldn't the first have been a sign" I was referring specifically to cases of life endangerment. The guy who even mildly ODs, wakes up suffering shortness of breath, unnaturally rapid heart rate, excessive dehydration etc., we like to think has the 'sense' to realize "this is unhealthy. I've got to change." Unfortunately, however, reality is that most realize no such thing, leaving themselves in priority sequence for the morgue. Before they ever get that fargone (this, I think, plays more into what you were saying), they reach a point of chemical dependency. I.e., their entire basic physiology has become wired around whatever it happens to be that they introduce to their system, and they cannot easily shake it. They are so dependent, in fact, that they have an almost knee-jerk, survival-like reaction to any perceived threat to their supply. They exhaust their own resources to maintain it, then seek the resources of others. You cannot entirely blame them - in such a state of chemical dependency, they are legitimately not 'themselves' anymore. Be cautious, cover your own ass, but have sympathy at the same time. Alienation, by its own definition, will not encourage them back into the fold (if anything, it will seem to vindicate their behavior).
@Original1Thor
@Original1Thor 7 жыл бұрын
Horst Reinhardt thanks. And yea, that dependency and them being not themselves is so real it's scary watching them go through it, if anything gets it in the way of their special favors they will literally bang their head against the wall till their ears bleed and not stop till they get their shit

So I live in NYC and a summer ago I saw Joe on the streets of NYC asking for money. This is truth. I asked him what happened and he claimed that he went back to doing drugs and drinking. It was weird seeing how after all of this he came back to it and didn't seem to have any kind of shame for it... Kinda gets you thinking how you never know what truly goes on on an addicts head even when he claims he's changed.
@Greg-yu4ij

He probably was clean, and then hard times came along, maybe an injury, maybe emotional pain, and since he knew he was 15 minutes away from taking all that pain away, it grind away in his head like a drill. His reward pathways won’t operate, and the pain just gets worse. He won’t last more than a few hours or a day until he will give in to it. They say you can’t get addicted off of just one use, however, you’ll never forget how good you felt, and how all your pain went away, and for the rest of your life, you’ll have to walk around with that psychological baggage. That’s why it’s best to tell your kids , when it comes to opiates and crack, it only takes one use. you will suffer psychologically if you know you’re one pill away from no pain. The saddest part of this isn’t that he’s addicted again, it’s that he had no daily medicine to block opiates to make it so his brain learns that it doesn’t work, or at least carry a weaker opiate. Now he hast to go through all that torture and hell, again, where each second drags on for an eternity.
@viktore1375

No they dont. Only the ones who live in NYC and somehow make $150 a day. I was homeless in Dublin, Ireland, and I'd be lucky to make over €5 from those c***s. Homelessness is the hardest ever barrier to getting women. I acheived success too, against all odds. But he's 6'4, good looking, rich, and in NYC. That he sleeps on the street is basically voluntary.
