The bird cage thing is weird. A relationship is not at all a cage. If a man doesn't want to be with me, he can go and I won''t try and stop him. I know who I am, and I think loyalty is beautiful and important. I honor my partner and I expect the same from him, but if he doesn't want that he can go. It's all about choice.

I always think it's weird when polyamourous people talk about the "pressures" of monogamy and not wanting to be someone's everything...I mean, I don't really understand where they get that. I don't think that's a healthy way to think about any relationship regardless of if you believe in monogamy or polyamoury or what

TheDryadsBubble yeah he should have said that monogamy is like having a bird that doesn't have a cage, and it can leave but chooses not to. Polyamory is when your bird takes off and visits other people but comes back to you for food and company, like a cat.

I'm not against polyamory, but this couple seems to mask a lot of the issues that come up with this kind of relationship, as well as their own relationship, by smiling non-stop and trying to act all relaxed and easygoing with everything.
@ninecastles
@ninecastles 7 жыл бұрын
Nadia L Firstly, I think that's your projection. Secondly, polyamorous relationships are still human relationships and will have to overcome and work through obstacles just like anyone else. But, it's the continuous dedication and understanding that we don't belong to one person, that people should be free to love whomever they choose both emotionally intellectually and physically, and that their love does not need to be measured through this idea of faithfulness within monogamy. it goes beyond that.
@eps3154

I agree. I also wouldn't consider their experience worthy of 'relationship expert' status. It would be like if anyone who made it in a 5 year marriage (monogamous or otherwise) were suddenly marriage experts. I understand if it is more difficult to find expertise or why stories like that of this couple gains attention because polyamory is a fairly new concept in the post-industrial west, but I'd still take testimonies like this video with a grain of salt...

When did monogamy become about "belonging" to anyone? If you don't want to be in a one-on-one relationship - leave. If anything it's about showing some respect to your partner and taking into consideration their feelings. This polyamorous bullshit is SO self serving its ridiculous. I "love" you and you and you and you and I'm gonna fuck all of you and then I'm gonna go fuck that other person too and EVERYONE is gonna be okay with it. And then we're gonna suppress our actual emotions and pretend that we're evolving because who wants anything slightly traditional - I'm WAY to advanced for all y'all........ EW! I'm disgusted by you but also in myself for hating you when I don't even know you.

Did he really compare his monogamous relationship as being a bird in a cage? First of all being in the right relationship shouldn't feel like a cage. He says "jealousy is like a method of avoiding other feelings that are perhaps scarier"...sounds like their fuck buddy relationship is him avoiding a shit ton of feelings. I'm getting a vibe that the girl isn't really that into it as her "partner" either. Her calling it an "experiment" is a dead giveaway that she sees this "lifestyle" as temporary. The way she says I just want him to be happy, just goes to show this is all his idea. He personally sounds like a selfish person and she definitely should dump him and let him be single since he wants to be a lake with many rivers attached to him..stupid analogies btw.

+Brendon Whipater Don't be silly. Polyamorous people get jealous too! Of course we do. The difference is managing that jealousy like any other negative emotion - You get angry with your husband, you talk about it. Your husband makes you sad, you talk about it. Your husband makes you jealous, you talk about it. Polyamorous relationships depend on honesty and communication. It requires you to have enough love and respect for each other to be honest about how you feel and work through it, together. It does NOT require you to be some sort of superhuman who never has negative emotions. :)

I think people that have this kind of relationship are honest people & if I have to choose bet polyamory and a cheating partner I would definitely go for polyamory. What about your ugly moments? When life gets tough for one of you and you go through really difficult periods? How do you get through the tough stuff when you've given yourself so many other 'beautiful' options?
@JonnyDee

Couldn't have said it better myself. My gf & I have a home, we have an incredible love life, but we also have bills, in-law's, i have a joint-custody kid, who sometimes makes home life tough, we have laundry, repairs, etc. (ie: not always fun "life stuff"). What's to say, our "poly" experiences with others who don't have these issues, say they're younger, have more time, money, less responsibilities, etc. don't become an easy escape for one of us to run to, to not have to deal with what the other's dealing with "at home"? I can't leave these responsibilities, while she can have multiple dates, stay out all night, or even for multiple days, so where does that leave me, & how do we grow together & become better people together, when it would be so easy to just run to the "more fun, less complicated" metamour?
@uberwench_

I applaud what they're doing. If it works for them then that's all that matters. But honestly, at the same time, nothing could seem more alien to me. Imagine having a really bad day; your car broke down, lose your job etc and you want nothing more than to be in the comforting embrace of the person you love. Oh but you forgot they're on a date. Having sex, or literally falling in love with someone else and doing everything you need them to do to you at that moment, but they're doing it to someone else. I can't think of anything worse tbh.
@beatweezl
@beatweezl 5 жыл бұрын
I was gonna say, well you just go to your "other" partner but like you said, there is only really that ONE person that you love and find comfort in. But now I'm thinking, maybe polyamory is like being ambidextrous. Some people can easily do things with either hand with no problem while others mostly rely on our dominant hand. Maybe some people's brains are wired for this.

As someone who is familiar with poly, is to some degree poly, and knows others who are poly, this is a strange, strange way to present it with a lot of females, almost no extra males besides Caleb. What actually bugs me the most is all the commenters arguing for monogamy by saying "I would never let my partner sleep with others". But no one says "I would never want to sleep with anyone else besides my partner". INTERESTING. VERY INTERESTING.

+xfrancescanicolex best comment so far! I am trying sooo hard to understand all this poly stuff, since I am a very open minded individual + bisexual, I know how someone do not believe someone is existing.. you know. But damn it's hard, may be I have something like Idk polyphobia) lol, just joking. But for real though, I am always thinking that mb poly and mono are as sexuality - if you feel as one or another it's probably cause this is just how you are .. Btw I got interested in your question too. Being in the relationship with a guy for 7 months now I had some thoughts in my head about girls.. and was asking myself if I would want to have sex with a girl, WHILE still being in this relationship.. funny enough I always say yes, but then going further in my visualization I realise - I will feel weird about it and it would not be natural to me, I'd rather do a threesome than just have sex with another person than my bf. Such a strange thoughts and view you are getting, when educate yourself on sex and sex related subject, I tell you what =)

Girl, we are all human and are sexually attracted to other people. Especially men are programmed to fuck any woman that is not completely ugly. But that is the whole point about real love. You do not want to share your partner with somebody else and therefore agree to be also faithful. Poly only works when there is no deep love involved. And to your point that there are more women than men involved in this docu: One man and multiple women is actually the most realistic of all poly-scenarios. It is by far the most common poly-scenario in human history and among higher animals. Men do not share women, they kill other men that want their women. So, if a man is willing to share you, he either does not love you and wants to fuck other women or he is afraid to lose you if he does not do so (what of course makes him a poor excuse of a man).

Me and my wife have been together for 16 years. We have a wonderful 14 year old son together. We have been open for 5 years. Over that time I have dated several women and fallen in love two different times. Love is infinite. It's like children, you don't love one less because you have another child. I'm happy for anyone that can be happy in a monogamous relationship, so why can't you be happy for people who aren't. I don't see what harm could possibly come from more love in the world. As long as you communicate properly, respect each other, and yourself, there is no reason this isn't a valid way to live your life.

So many people in this comment section seem to be projecting their own insecurities around cheating, jealously, etc. onto this couple that we only get to see for 15 minutes. Just because most of us have never been given a model of open relationships and have only ever known the principles monogamy, doesn't mean that polyamory isn't working for these people. Just because it makes you feel uncomfortable or upset doesn't mean they feel the same way, or that they can't be happy, excited, in love, and having fun connecting with different people and eachother. I'm sure they run into challenging times like any human or relationship does, but regardless of the relationship the key is communication, love, and support. Conor and Brittany are a beautiful poly couple that have so much to share if you want to learn more about the details of open relationships on their channel. I'm monogamous but I still get so much wisdom and inspiration from them: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qbWXhcam2L3RZGw.html

The guy's metaphors are just as bad as his views on Relationships. I mean what has happened to love? Where is the special connection? Where is the purity and patience that defines two souls into one in a relationship? Loving one person for the rest of your life and being committed to them takes a lot of hard work and patience, and sacrifices. A good relationship is built on a strong foundation. To be a successful businessman, you work hard, to have a slim figure, you work hard, to raise kids well, you work HARD. Nothing comes easy and if this is how those who are justifying polyamorous relationships are going to come to terms regarding their life paths, then they are not stable and need mental help.

Do you seriously think this kind of relationship doesn't require hard work? From what I understand, they require a great deal of work, emotional maturity, and above all a strong loving bond between the primary couple which can overcome feelings of jealously and ownership. Who the hell is anyone else to tell them that their love isn't real? No-one else can make that choice, and no-one else can make that judgement, it's entirely subjective. If you think you're happiest in a monogamous relationship, that's great, and I hope you're happy. If they're happiest in a polyamorous relationship, that's great too. Where exactly does your desire to judge people like this come from?
@Alidaramms1
@Alidaramms1 7 жыл бұрын
It requires less work than controling their instincts and not feeling trapped in a relationship
@monkeymox
@monkeymox 7 жыл бұрын
All that means is that it requires a different kind of work - yes maybe less in some respects, but more in others. And anyway, why is hard work such a virtue? Why as as a society do we see relationships which are maintained through effort as intrinsically better in some way? Surely a relationship which holds together without it requiring some great force of will is more meaningful in some sense, since the partners remain within it out of genuine love or desire, rather than some sort of sense of duty. I'm purposefully caricaturing the false dichotomy, so I don't mean to belittle the relationships of those who have worked hard to maintain them. The point is, there are many ways of finding happiness, and many ways of finding meaning in a relationship. Just because monogamy is the 'normal' way of achieving those things in our society, it doesn't mean it's the only way.

@rannoon123 It's not that they HAVE to have gone and had sex with other people, but rather that if they did that's ok--just like if they did a hobby, met a friend, or went to work. Sexual and romantic interactions are just another facet of life that doesn't have to be put in its own separate box, unless that feels good for you and your partner and you love being monogamous--that's awesome too. Consensual open relationships are just the form authentic love takes for some people.

Very interesting perspective and got me thinking. So thank you for this video. Just wanted to share my thoughts and mere opinions not backed by data. I believe that the feelings like jealousy, ownership, lust for sex with others in a monogamy relationship are evolutionary properties that have been serving us for thousands of years. Without jealousy, there can be no initiative to change or grow for your other partner. Example, if I’m fat and my partner makes a comment about a ‘hot’ guy, I am jealous, and I would start to question why and how can I be better. If it’s reasonable and not impractical to change, this change is necessary. Jealousy starts our inner conversation with ourselves. Ownership in my eyes serves as motivation to achieve something that one deems precious or valuable or worth sacrificing for I.e. your partner. The feeling of ownership comes with fear of losing someone or something, even anger, all of which are essential recipes to propel someone into achieving a goal - a person. Beyond the bounds of practicality, ownership is detrimental to oneself and the partner (abusive and insecure relationship), but ownership with awareness is an evolutionary character that we must all cherish and cultivate. Lastly, lust for sex and the itch to experience like our first ‘sex’ really is not different from one’s habit of seeking for that first experience with any drug. Tolerance is what we build and we perceive less of the same amount, so the only way to perceive more is to increase that amount. Here, anecdotal data shows that one can only increase this ‘amount ‘ that an individual seeks to a certain extent before the body starts to breakdown. Lust helps us to understand our cravings and get us into thinking why? Shutting it down will NOT stop our ancestral cravings for sex - hormones are what shape us. Understanding this notion biologically, by controlling (not suppressing) our lust, we can experience ‘the first time feeling’ with the same amount. Feeling like it’s the first time with a person you’ve had sex with for a thousand times before. Patience and control will elevate one’s mind to control your body. Along with these evolutionary behavior that we develop, it only makes us stronger as a person living the life as a human being today. With every gain, there must be a loss. Polyamorous relationships highlight too much of the gain, and to me, something is missing that I don’t see - the loss, the suffering. I hope this starts conversations, please share your thoughts. Thank you :)

What is happiness? Referring to the epicurean ideology of happiness we can postulate that fucking is not real happiness but friendship is the true answer to true happiness. Mutual growth shared in between two or more individual challenging one another in order to expand as beings. Also wouldn't polyamory indicate sexual inadequacy? An inabilty to fulfil one's partner. A lack of focus, a lack of self discipline?

+stuff mate you've obviously never been in a long term relationship. the sex gets boring. end of story. some people are open to the idea of finding pleasure elsewhere, and bringing back those experiences to make their lie as a couple more exciting and fulfilling. what you said about friendship, that's what they have. the sexual aide of things started to fizzle out but they cared too deeply for eachother to just move on so they made it work. okay, this is NOT a good representation of what being in a polyamorous relationship is all about/what the definition of polyamory is. This is basically an open relationship with extreme lowkey jealousy. I personally do not think what they are doing is healthy. Like, really ? DELIBERATELY showing one another how many people y'all can attract on social media ? How immature. It's like they're saying "OMG look at how many people want me! haha. dont get jealous though, because we both agreed this relationship would be open!" Polyamory is about trust, being considerate, communication, and equality in love among all the people involved. Everyone has the freedom and the choice to do as they please, just as long as all partners involved agree to the terms the individuals set. All partners consent to what each partner in the relationship wants. Everyone has to be on the same page so that everyone can benefit from being in a relationship with more than one person. What these people are doing is some childish shit. They don't have to show each other every single person that shows interest in them! They just have to be okay with the fact that their partner has other partners, because its what makes their significant other happy/that's what they both agreed on. All they're doing is building up resentment towards one another. Polygamy can be healthy, but what they're doing is not, in my opinion. This video is giving people a misinterpretation of what polyamory is and I just wanted to clear it up for people interested in wanting to know more about it. Perhaps people would be more open-minded towards polyamory if they were more educated and had a better understanding of what it is. I think being able to love is amazing. Being able to love more than one person in an ethical way is even more amazing. On the other hand, though, if doing all that makes that couple happy , who am I to judge or say it's wrong ? I'm just saying that I can clearly see the tension and hidden jealousy between them but hey, if that's what gets them off, more power to them.

I'd like to add that I am polyamorous myself, and I would not be comfortable in their situation, but that's because I am a different person. With polyamory the things that are unhealthy/damaging like cheating, bad communication, losing yourself in negative emotions are more clear than what constitutes a healthy polyamorous relationship. There is no perfect way to live the polyamorous life.

They may have THOUGHT they tried "the poly" (their words; not mine) but I can assure you a "who can bang the cost people competition" is not at all what Polyamory is. Also "....the only way to combat it [jealousy] is to replicate what your partner is doing to a greater extent" is f**king horrible advice and that's exactly why that wasn't poly. The way you overcome jealousy is not by seeing if you can hurt the feelings of someone you care about/attempting to make them more jealous than you are. That's immaturity firing on all cylinders. If you're going to try "the poly" it might help if you read a book first and KNOW exactly what Poly is and isnt. The problem +X-RA3 experienced is one of the biggest disclaimers in poly 101. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I found that having an authentic and supportive relationship takes a lot of time and effort. Having that kind of deep caring relationship with more than one person seems exhausting. The closest kind of relationship to being a couple is loving and caring for a child. Even though the child/parent relationship is not as full spectrum as the spouse'/spouse relationship, each of these can impact on the other. I can't see how a poly relationship involving both spouses wouldn't diminish their primary partnership.

Maturity is recognizing that there isn't just one way to live a life. Maturity is not assuming they sacrifice nothing to be together or that they don't take care of their house or children because they live a life style different form yours. Maturity is recognizing there is a difference between sacrificing for some one and martyrdom. I have friends who are in a poly relationship. He travels all over for work, extended teaching assignments at universities everywhere often for several months at a time. He is married with 2 kids. They have an open relationship and one of the advantages they get is that she has help form several other people who she is in a relationship with who help with the kids. She does not feel alone and left with all the responsibility and he does not feel like he has to abandon his career to have kids. Some sacrifices are to be avoided. In an increasingly connected world the old relationships don't always work well. In the past she would end as a single mom and he would not ever have had kids.

Its something I could never do. However, I do completely accept that not all people are the same as me! And in the animal kingdom, its normal to have multiple mates. As long as nobodies feelings are getting hurt I think this is fine. People talk about diseases spreading but you can get an std in a monogamous relationship if your partner cheats and doesn't use protection. The most important thing is to be respectful of each other and communicate. But overall I don't think it's for everyone you have to be pretty open minded and mature about it. Most people in this society aren't even capable of independent, uninfluenced thought so it won't become a popular thing any time soon. But to those who can handle it I say enjoy.

I have always wondered why I always imagined my future with multiple people who all love each other even though I didn't see any representation of that kind of relationship and I have never been in an official romantic relationship or had sex. But I see that polyamory is always thought about as sex but for me it's more about affection. It could be with an asexual person and a bi person or whatever. I don't think hold sex as strongly as love in a romantic relationship. I am writer and when I write romance, I rarely even include kissing and those relationships are often 'epic' love. Yes sex is important if it is desired but it is not as important as love. I don't want my partner going on dates and looking for people. But if you encounter someone let's both see how that goes. That's where I am at now but things might change in the future. Funny thing is that I am not even interested in dating at all right now.

@@updatemysettings5095 So when you think of polyamory, you think of a person forcing their partner to be ok with them dating multiple lovers? Because that is absolutely not the model or the norm of poly relationships. The ideal poly relationship, like any good relationship, is built on trust, mutual respect, communication, boundaries, and shared values and desires. If someone is forcing their partner to be ok with them have multiple partners, it's manipulation. If someone is having multiple partners without the consent and understanding of their partners, it's cheating. Neither exemplfies polyamory. Just like you can't judge monogamy by the dysfunctional monogamous relationships that exist (with cheating and lying and unhappiness), you can't judge polyamory as a whole by the similarly dysfunctional polyamorous relationships that exist.

This has nothing to do with open-mindedness but everything to do with corroding a healthy and meaningful relationship. The analogy with a caged bird is moronic and absurd in every sense. Anyone with the RIGHT partner is COMPLETE. Ultimately from what I got out of this is COMMUNICATION and HONESTY. And most often the lack of both is what leads to a failed relationship. It really isn't rocket science.

we are whole just as we are. a relationship is for procreation and in order for a child to experience a healthy upbringing he needs happy and healthy parents that have a cohesive relationship. if others are included so be it but it needs to remain healthy.

this is cool. it's not my style, but I think it's great these people have found a fulfilling way to healthily express their love and meet their needs. open-mindedness is key.

So for someone who's been doing this a while, I want to answer some questions. 1. Most guys get freaked out if you tell them your poly. So no, not that easy. 2. To me these guys seem decently hapoy together. Everything will always look akward on camera. This is a deeply personal reveal. 3. OPEN COMMUNICATION. seriously, this is the largest thing! People dont know how to do this on average. That's why they cant picture this happening.

The poly community is hilarious. There's an odd trend in their community where the more bizzarre and ridiculous your relationship is, the more "progressive" you are considered. Glad I'm normal.
