Invisible People

Күн бұрын

Eric lives in a homeless shelter in Traverse City, Michigan. He also works full time as a cook in a local restaurant.
Over the winter, Eric stayed in the emergency shelter. He talks about the challenges homeless people with jobs face while living in a homeless shelter. Most shelters are not set up for second or third shift workers.
The leading cause of homelessness is the lack of affordable housing. Because of that, more people with jobs just cannot afford a place to live and end up becoming working homeless.

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they're on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as KZfaq, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can't ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation's most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America's homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

Michele Smart, My guessing is that people subconsciously understand that it can easily happen to them, so on conscious level they come up with all sorts of reasons why "it's their own fault", "it will never happen to me, because I'm responsible", and so forth...

Shouldnt child support be based on your earnings? If he cant afford a roof over his head then obviously the child support is too high. America is basically a 3rd world country under the surface.

3rd world country? I mainly look at 3 metrics in evaluating this. 1 - The condition of the infrastructure. 2 - Level of governmental corruption. 3 - The gap between the rich and poor/haves and have nots. Yes, Amerika is a 3rd world country with a shiny wrapper of delusional covering it.

Child support IS based on your earnings. It sounds like his payments racked up on him by not paying in the first place ( irresponsibility maybe?) and he didn't report to the court so they piled up and now he has to pay the back child support and the current.
@KS-jg6bx
@KS-jg6bx 5 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, you guys didn't know? The courts can ding you on what you are SUPPOSED to be making. So for example if you have a trade, degree or MA in a field that is supposed to be high earning, they can charge you at those rates if you dont even have a job. That is one exception to the "income" rule, that they dont talk about... Its horrible. Dont marry. Why? Because if you put yourself in a seriously vulnerable position and in society nowadays it could prove quite fatal.

@@douglaslandfield let's not forget the politicians who protect them. People are never told of all the crimes even the nicest of illegals actually commit to pperate here. If we did what they do, we get +25 years. They get state and federal help and don't have to pay state and fedeeal taxes so they maximise their dependent claims. Now they are being allowed to vote. People in the US are being replaced by people with less rights. They have 4 kids compared to our 1-2 kids. We pay taxes, they don't. They get welfare, we don't. We put in the same hours on a job and they are paid much more while we pay in the taxes. They keep their money in a legal name in their country and get low or no costs, we are indebted for years. We pay our credit cards plus interest, they walk away and get a new name. There sre many, many more examples od how both parties are replacing us as we are sleep watching any news channel's fake opinion pieces that has zero journalism. The main phase of the take over begins when there's mainstream acceptance of illegal votes. If you complain, you will be labeled racist, liar, brith privilaged, a hate group member, etc. by those in the fake news and political offices that are bought and paid for by foreign special interests and treasonist citizens.

Please the local government should be issuing lucid homeless at least a vehicle- to keep their stuff in. Yes the vehicles will have to be maintained... so there's that... The vehicle solution is much cheaper than building shelters - aka slums.... People don't want them in their neighborhoods.... this is why they are not built. Plus the cost of a 1.5 million dollar building is unreasonable- just to shelter, say 25 people.

Where i live you pay child support depending on your income. If you are become homeless due to a nasty divorce the state will help you get a house and a job to support both the rent and the child support. If you for some reason cannot make ends meet while living underneath the poverty line. (Job not paying enough, or not enough hours) The state gives money to get you above the poverty line. Homelessness in my country is a choice.

Dan Buchner I’m going to start by staying I’m a divorced woman. Just want say that before someone attacks me for being pro deadbeat dad. I agree child support is often used as a weapon. I would never throw my ex husband in jail over support. That would hurt my daughter deeply. I know when my ex husband could pay as much as he had for a few months I didn’t try to throw him in jail. I asked him to pay what he could when he was in a better place give more. That is why when we divorced we chose to handle support ourselves and by the state.I have female friends they try all the time to raise the support to levels they know there ex husbands can’t pay because they want them in jail and homeless. We are divorced but we are a partnership in what’s best for my daughter. I’m remarried and my husband and I invite my ex husband to decorate the Christmas tree with us because my daughter deserves parents that are adults.

I'm sure he wants to take care of his children. There are exceptions to any rule, but most people will do anything to help their children. He said he was in a violent relationship, which I interpret as verbal or emotional abuse from his ex-wife. He needs to rebuild his own life, recover emotionally from his relationship with some therapy, and create some financial stability. Then, he will be a position to help his children. Things should progress in this order. If all or most of his money goes towards child support, that makes no sense, and he will never dig himself out of the hole he's in. If he wishes, he could help his children a little bit for now and spend some time with them until he is in a better position financially, when he will be able to help more. It is like that pre-flight safety presentation on a plane. You are always told to secure your oxygen mask first before helping your child. Why? Because you must be safe and secure first before you can help your child. M Soda, you are right, many women try to raise the level of child support simply to put financial pressure on the men. They use this as a legal weapon. They can get away with it because the courts are biased against men, but again, this is changing. Tony C, he may or may not have a degree, I don't know, but he sounded to me like an intelligent, but beaten-down, man. He sounds like the kind of person who, given the right opportunity, can do well for himself and his children.

And if he homeless, the courts Should be modifying his child support. That's BS, child support should Not put a man on streets.

Unless you are a crazy person, or an orphan or an addict, or an asshole who has burned every bridge they had in life, shouldn't we all have someone that can help us when times are tough?

Who on Earth in his family is going to believe his wife instead of believing him? His brothers his sisters his parents his aunts, uncles, cousins, are going to just believe his wife and her lies instead of the person they have grown up with their entire lives?...That math isn't making much sense. Unless, of course, he has proven himself to be a man that doesn't tell the truth and hence, his biological family wouldn't believe his side of things.

DaOnly One Wake up! I lost my whole family to my sister-in-law. I am almost homeless and my parents were rich. My brother keeps all our parents assets for the last 5 years, since my father has died. My brother built a gang with his wife to get everything which is/was mine. The most painful loss being my family's love. You should research about the narcissistic personality disorder, flying monkeys, triangulation, gaslighting and the whole bunch of strategies they use to destroy you.

The "FEW" stories? You're joking, right? I aged out of foster care to homelessness at 18 while a senior in high school. I was a straight A student, had a job, and went to college. I was homeless every time the dorms closed for the holidays. I have never done drugs or had a substance use problem. I've never been arrested. I graduated college and have a professional job. I have no support system, so guess what? I'm basically two paychecks from being homeless. Get out of here with your judgmental, compassionless self. I feel sorry for people like you.

Amy Campbell So because I said "a few" that makes me judgemental? What does that make you?.... judgemental!!!! A support system doesn't have to be family and God given, you can create your own support system by helping others and being a support system for others. College friends, neighbors, community outreach programs etc.

As a working man who pays taxes I often criticize the social welfare systems we have in place in Ireland. I think to myself "why can't we live in a fully capitalist society like in America, why should I pay for everyone else?" Then I see an Invisible People video, and am reminded why I should actually be grateful for our social security system. I'm paying high taxes, but I can rest easy in the knowledge that if my luck ran out I'll still have a roof over my head and can rely on the government supplying me with enough money to survive.

Here in the US, your friends and family are your safety blanket. If you don’t have that safety blanket, you don’t have mom and pop to run to when shit hits the fan YOU ARE SCREWED. The best way to give yourself some security is to save up, but that’s nearly impossible when you’re living paycheck to paycheck. Most people have cars and a place to live, an iPhone , but at any moment you really can lose it all, I’ve come close to it myself and if it wasn’t for my friends and family I’d be on the street myself,

Child support and fines can land people in jail almost like a debtor prison. Don’t attack me saying am for dead beat dads. I’m saying that sometimes child support can be used as a weapon. I’m a divorced woman and I left an a abusive marriage. In spite of my issues with my ex husband when he was laid off from work I tried to work with him. I don’t use my child as a weapon as I’ve seen some women do. I have a friend that loves to try to destroy her ex husband. I feel like divorced couples often forget that children love both their parents. They throw rocks at each other but often just hit the child. After my divorce my husband went to therapy and slowly proved he could be a positive addition to my daughter’s life. If I threw him and jail and tried to use support as a weapon I would have done no good for my daughter. At the same time fathers that don’t have all the money the pay child support should work with the mothers to pay what they have. But shouldn’t be paying so much they a sleeping on the streets in spite of having a job.
@msoda8516
@msoda8516 6 жыл бұрын
tatestudios510 What?! I’m so confused?! Did your read my whole comment?!?Number one I’m against women using child support as a weapon. Also I got married 6 years before my daughter was born. Also the abuse from my ex husband didn’t start until after my wedding.I filed for divorce when she was 6 months old. That way she didn’t see parents yelling and fighting as grew up in a safe loving environment . Number 2 I have enough money to support my daughter, every penny of child support my ex husband has paid has been put in an account for my daughter. Child support is just that it is my daughter money. My 13 year old daughter lives with me and I have sole legal custody. I live a very good upper middle class life. My ex husband has since been to counseling and as addressed his issues so he has a healthy role in our daughters life. My point that you clearly missed was parents shouldn’t be using child support to tear each other down. I also that the money is the child’s and not the mothers to use on herself. I’m not sure how you misunderstand what I wrote I was saying I have seen cases that lead to people on the street. I was not speaking about myself. I was also saying then case of this poor homeless man he was working and paying support. So I said a homeless father isn’t good for the children. I work I am a small business owner in fact I employ 6 people in my trucking company .

I get what you're saying! I wish more women had the same perspective. I think men can be destroyed from women taking things too far. In Australia we had a law that if a man was driven to suicide, the family can sue the spouse for driving the man to suicide. Being so bitter and destroying a person ....achieves nothing.
