Homeless shepherd starts world's smallest farm. Fits in DIY wagon

Aaron Fletcher has been a nomadic shepherd for about a decade, but more recently he has settled down as a land sitter, running what is probably the country’s smallest viable farm.
Watch the two previous stories with Aaron Fletcher's:
- Part I: On Guerrilla Grazing around Southern Oregon • Went homeless. Done Gu...
- Part II: Staying Healthy, diet & lifestyle tips • Homeless shepherd shar...
When we first met Aaron a couple years ago, he and his sheep would pull his wagon home 5 to 10 miles every day in search of greener pastures. He sleeps and rests in his mini wagon, while his sheep "guerrilla graze": eat roadside weeds and trim vacant lots and yards (with permission).
Wanting to use his abundant milk, and generate a small economy for himself, Aaron invested in an ice cream maker, three mini fridges and a solar battery. This extra weight required larger animals to pull the wagon so Aaron tried out a donkey. Recognizing that equines are too big and dangerous for such close quarters, Aaron now plans to re-home it and buy a human harness to help pull the wagon himself.
While he waits for a harness to pull his heavier wagon, Aaron is farm-sitting for a city-dwelling land owner. Here there are plenty of fresh eggs and the calm to invent new systems for his micro mobile farm.
Aaron says his main job is juggling milk: to “balance year-round cheesemaking outdoors, on the go, with no refrigeration.” He’s worked out a system so when milk is most plentiful he makes butter and big cheeses, when he’s getting about 3 cups per milking, he makes ice cream and when he is milking under 3 cups per milking, he makes kefir and single batch fresh cheese.

My dear Kirsten, the tale of this shepherd named Aaron has certainly stirred my hobbit curiosity! A nomad, a shepherd, and a farmer, all at once - that's an extraordinary blend of roles that goes far beyond my simple life in the Shire. His wandering life, the wagon he calls home, his flock, his self-sufficiency - it reminds me a bit of my own unexpected journey. And the fact that he uses his sheep to "guerrilla graze" roadside weeds - what a clever, resourceful fellow! And his endeavour to make cheese and ice cream on the go, with no proper pantry or larder to store it! It's quite the feat, and such a hobbit-like delight for dairy products. I do hope he finds time to enjoy a second breakfast between all his work. So here's to Aaron, a brave and enterprising soul, far more adventurous than any hobbit I know. Keep on with your journey, and may your path always lead to warm hearths and bountiful pastures. I do hope he knows, the road goes ever on and on.

The states spend millions on weed control, especially thistle. Goats love thistle, the thistle brings nutrients to the surface, and goat droppings restore soil nutrients. Seems like there should be more herders along the highways and byways. I imagine the authorities frown on it as a hazard.

I remember you interviewing Aaron before. He made quite an impression on me the first time I saw him wandering happily. I have thought of him a good number of times since that video you did Kristen. Now it seems he's found a place among honorable neighbors and can do a bit more. Please continue to update us about Aaron over time as this is a most interesting story with a lot of morality connected to his life to consider. 😊 Frankly, I have so little understanding of old world skill like Aaron does he mystifies me. The more I watch his methods and mind work the more amazing I find him. This really needs to go from Kristen's video work to being published for schools and people to read. Bygone eras like this are exceedingly rare especially mixed with his modern infuse natural methods.

This is a lucrative, boutique market. He has intimate knowledge of his animals and production practices and could secure more land and scale up. I don't think he wants to. He is perfectly content with his choices, but he has built his life on the unspoken premise of being a _solitary_ shepherd.
@bethhubbs9937
@bethhubbs9937 7 ай бұрын
And he's really trying to model how others can do this on a super small scale. He does a lot of things on his own/in a solitary fashion, but seems to be a real networker and community builder. If you barter/trade, you have to build a community of people to barter/trade with and he seems to be successful in that. Having a platform in which many can participate would be helpful so others can join in. I love how Aaron is offering products that are made by others. Those soaps are beautiful. :) And all those foods look so tasty. The meals he cooks in his solar oven tool look amazing. All the best to Aaron, his sheep/pets, Kirsten and fam and all those reading the comments in this section. :)

I like the fact that he acknowledges both the pros and cons of steps like pasteurization and incorporates the nuances when he discusses them. So often in today’s society, people completely ignore the nuances when they make an argument. (And sadly, many people don’t want to hear the nuances. They are either too impatient or don’t have the mental capacity to deal with ambiguity.)

Pecorino Romano and Parmesan Reggiano are both Italian sheep's milk cheeses - sheep's milk being the standard for those cheeses. There's a very noticeable taste and texture difference from cow's milk Pecorino and Parmesan cheeses, of which are the standard product available in most grocery stores, but if you're lucky enough to find yourself the sheep's milk made cheeses in your local grocery store, you'll never be satisfied with anything but that on your spaghetti ever again!

Man, he has so much first hand working knowledge of these things that it could be a masterclass for those who want to understand how to do it themselves without all of the unnecessary steps or accoutrements that are typically used, as the "right/modern way" of doing it. The blending of old world skills with some small modern accessories to get the best of both worlds is just testament to his personal innovation and problem solving. There should be more nomadic people doing this sort of thing in a general region (like a state or 2) doing this sort of thing - it would be the self sufficiency and personal growth that many are seeking, and can be taught as an apprenticeship as one moves on to other things, while handing off the habits, knowledge, routes & region to a new person to tend to and interact with. I feel like this is the missing life's blood to healthy local interactive communities, personally.

Traveling affordable farmhands will be increasingly needed to worktrade for camping/produce by most small farms so that they can be productive enough to stay financially afloat and not have to sell their farms to larger entities as bill gates and black rock are the largest farmland owners in America already trying to monopolize our farmland and obvious food supply. Small farms need to be empowered by a free farmhand movement AND the homeless, as well as disgruntled workers need to be empowered by knowing about the simple farmhanding and property sitting options

I've been following him since your first episode staring him and his sheep. His mind fascinates me. I've recently learned that the holes in Swiss cheese is only produced if alfalfa dust particles are present. When modern technology changed cheese making, the holes started to disappear. So, those dust particles found naturally in dairy farm cheese production actually make the cheeses better tasting and more authentic to the original recipes. Food for thought.
