Reasons for homelessness? You forgot addiction and mental health. Step Denver will help any male willing to get sober get off the streets, get employed and get into housing. There are numerous programs for females also. If you want off the streets and to not be homeless, there are non profit and government programs in place that will help you. The first obstacle which is by far the hardest is getting sober and not getting kicked out of the program. Second is having to follow instructions on how to stay sober and become a productive member of society.

I’m in downtown Denver quite a bit with my job. There’s open drug abuse rampant throughout the area. They shoot up openly right outside of nice restaurants and police drive by and don’t or can’t do anything about it. A couple of days ago a homeless man had blood all down the side of his head running around screaming and I tried to help law enforcement locate him and get him help but each time he would disappear on another street or the 16th Street Mall. Horrific situation. So many times these people with mental illness and high out of their minds on meth and God knows what are screaming out loud talking to themselves or people who aren’t there and the working class folks just ignore them like they don’t even exist. Denver leaders such as Governor Polis and Mayor Hancock don’t seem to have any interest in helping deal with it. It’s horribly out of control 😡👎😖

I was there for a while. The worst case I saw, he was a young guy. Very out of it. He wasn't wearing shoes but had in socks. I remember him sitting down right near me and he slowly peeled his socks off and was screaming out in pain. When I saw the bottom of his feet.. it looked like he was covered in deep sores half an inch deep. It was just awful, I remember it making me so upset. I had cream for my feet in case I needed it for walking, I gave him the bottle and he used the entire thing at once and sighed a little in relief. Then said something like, he had to go now and find some street drug as it was the only thing that could numb him from the pain he was in. He slowly got up and walked away, crying out with every step. Just heartbreaking. 💔

Yeah, since Colorado was one of the first states to legalize marijuana they said the population in Denver doubled in a very short time. They do have a shelter there with basically no rules. Saw many groups of guys bringing in large containers of alcohol and drinking it openly, as long as they weren't actively fighting or causing a scene it didn't seem to be a big issue. I talked to a lot of guys who said they had been staying there 10+ years with no desire to leave or seek employment. I was there for several months, it was a challenge even getting work at a temp service for a few hours of minimum wage.. after a while I started to understand a little the mentality they developed in that atmosphere. I don't know what they will do, the homeless population is so big they just want to get many people off the streets from sundown to sunrise instead of crashing on the sidewalks. I'm glad I moved on. Had the same job for over a year now and while some of them want to give me a hard time.. I'm just thankful to be doing something. My heart hurts for those people. Most of them seemed at least fairly nice.. just lost and not sure how to change it.

The drug situation here in Denver is terrible. I lived in Aurora for 2 years and there were needles and foil all over the place. I almost put my hand on one when I was unloading my clothes from a washing machine into the dryer. Somehow, a syringe was left in the dryer, and when I was feeling around for any debris, I almost got poked. There are homeless people on drugs all over the place. I moved to Glendale, and this happens less in this area, but there are still tweakers all over the place begging for money. I don't go to 16th street mall anymore because of all the alleys. There is a constant flow of homeless drug addicts coming and going from alleyway to alleyway. There are different street gangs in various alleys, all of them selling their own product. It's not a safe place to live. I am about to graduate with my nursing degree. I want to start traveling as a nurse. Once I find a city outside of Colorado that suits me, I will be permanently leaving this state behind.

When I was 12 we wrapped clothes up and maked the sizes on the packages and put them on the capitol steps no sooner we got back around the block all the packages were gone and I saw my clothes being worn by homeless people and children. It was a cold day in November and we wanted to give others what we couldn't use anymore. So that was 1992 alot less homeless around then compared to now. Breaks my heart, but alot of them choose to live this life style. My apartments were briefly featured in this video, the crime over here is out of control. For about a month straight every couple of nights you could hear gunfire, folks screaming. Drug deals happen so brazenly you would think that the police don’t even exist. Robberies, BnEs among other things like petty crime. There is barely any order here in Denver now, we catch and release criminals like fu*king fish. No real punishment for anything, nothing teaches a lesson like a slap on the wrist. Sorry if this rant is so disorderly lol, needed to offload some of my frustrations. 💀✌🏽

The homeless who are on the street are usually there because of drug addiction. The people who are homeless because of a sudden life change are willing to get help through shelters and programs. My friend Nick and her boyfriend and my 4 year old girl are also thier. Try to get ahold of them. Like they disappeared. I struggle with failure never could seem keep us together and standing tall. Blame my father for that. This city tore me down but I consider this extended family with a handful of actual family. I received a lot of love from this city. And I tried to give as much as I could. This makes me want to cry because I use to live just outside of Denver in Aurora, Colorado and went to Denver all the time. There is much more homelessness there since left to go to graduate in August 2020. Where did all of these homeless people come from because they wasn't there when I was living in Aurora, Colorado. Oh my goodness! This is shocking. It wasn't like this 2 years ago, Did the pandemic cause all this homelessness? This makes me want to cry. This brings tears to my eyes. This brakes my heart to see this happening in America. We are seeing all of this because we loss the war on drugs. It's not so much about locking up the drug dealers. It is also about the demand for drugs. So, this is why we are seeing all of this homelessness. America has been fighting the drug war for years, but the people just keep buying it and getting addicted. How do you find homes for people who are addicted to drugs? They must overcome their addiction first which is very expensive.

Dr. Emory Car Sims Well, based on what I saw with my own eyes, most of these people need psychiatric evaluation first, followed by mental health treatment. Unfortunately, we don't have a mental hospital anymore because Ronald Reagan signed the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act back in 1981. I think drugs are the leading cause of mental breakdown in this country; without treatment, these people will never live an everyday productive life again. Being up -close with them is the saddest side to see.

We went to Denver for vacation last month. I was a little naive to the homelessness and crime problem in Denver before we visited the city. I always hear about these issues in other major cities like Philly, NY, San Fran, etc. We stayed downtown (on Zuni) and we got a quick dose of reality. The homeless people didn't bother us too much and they pretty much stayed off the hotel property. We did hear gunshots st 1:30 am about 1 hour before we were leaving to go to the airport. Keep in mind there's lots of tourist at the two hotels and pricey apartments nearby. I was so glad we were leaving. If you plan to visit Denver, make sure you do a little research on where you plan stay.

😢This is such an epidemic. Such a vicious circle that goes round and round and I feel can be made less so. With so many vacant properties and monies given to states if the federal government politicians stopped being so greedy and just opened their eyes to help instead of blame what a difference could be made. Who knows how these people got here, everyone has their own story and maybe with just a bit of help and encouragement and support they could be independent again. I was homeless for a bit and its so very hard to get back to "normal" so very very hard. There is virtually no help programs are meant to keep you chained insted of slowly letting you get used to things pn your own its either all help or no help , nothing in between 😮😢. Your opening statement re other countries believing there's no poverty here is mindboggling...and revealing about gullibility and the power of media.

Barbara Dallas, thanks for your comment; that includes my sister, who also believes I'm lying about poverty and homelessness in this country. That has motivated me to make a USA video series on that particular subject starting here in Colorado and traveling across the country. I also want to bring awareness to the local communities in this country.

Ok so u made this video, people agree and think we should do something about this. Why are we not doing anything about this? Theres enough awareness and no solutions. Do not expect “leaders” or “politicians” to do shit about this. They never will and they dont care. We are the ones that have the heart and willingness to help, so what can we do so? 1 Its as easy as just stopping and having a conversation with any homeless, ask them about themselves, what they need and how u can help them, make them feel valuable. I do this all the time and they all appreciate it a lot and I do too! I hear crazy stories and heartbreaking stories that help me be more compassionate and grateful for what i have. 2 make a meal (or a couple) amd go give it to a homeless. This is important but also temporary, so It’s great to stop and ask if they need anything else. 3 Give out things u dont need, especially clothes. 4 if u see someone at a light or somewhere asking u for money and u dont want to give them cash and have nothing else to give, stop and ask if they’d like some water or food and go get it for them, it will only take a couple mins of ur time to help a person out. I definitely never give them cash, because in the streets, u never know how they will use it or if it’s for drugs. I rather offer them water, food, clothes or essentials things. It’s really so easy to help homelessness, i have many relationships with homless people ive helped and they have my number and when they need something they text me and if i can help i do and sometimes i cant and they undeRstand. We need to stop thinking that homeless are dangerous or a threat. I agree there are a lot of drugadicts who are not in their right mindset and could be a threat, but most of them are really just people in need, that may have fallen into drugs because of this shitty society that we live in but they really just need one heart to listen to them. 💜

Also, regarding mental health, people dont need to go to mental health institutions or to thrapist who will only give them pills and become more depressed. People just need love, everyone does, but nobody knows how to give or receive love. That why we just have pills, “an easy fix” it goes way deeper than thats.
