Dad's out-working you 2:1 :) he's bucking and tossing, you just messing with your saw. Thats a pretty good day out in the woods :) My dad can't work like that anymore, just glad to be able to hang out and b.s. with him.

Hate to say it but dad still works like he can kick son's ass. Your lucky u can do these kinds of things with your dad, appreciate them.

He probably could. He's worked in the log woods most of his life and on the farm. I've seen him do some pretty impressive things. I love that I can still work by his side and I'm glad I document it for my son to watch one day.

In my opinion those are the most reliable saws made

If you ask me id say a L65 or L77 husqvarna is just a touch more reliable. Very ignorant saws however. Not something youd want to use with little experience. The super xl however is a much nicer saw to use. It has a decent amount of power which is tame as opposed to just plain aggressive. I have used both and honestly i prefer the homelite because i dont feel like im holding an irritable demon in my hands. The l65 however gets the nod for sound and just raw power. Even a modern 70cc saw doesnt act as raw even though it will have more power. Thats my 2c for ya. Have a nice day and enjoy them old saws buddy

@@tylerrosborough9566 , That’s a good deal, I build a lot of the older saws on my channel

@@alexhickey5633 Maybe it is all in my head because of seeing old saws broken all the time. Newer saws that were made before all of this strato charge mess seem to be the most reliable due to having tighter tolerances and better dust separation. Those are just my thoughts.

Just picked up a '79 or '80 super xl for $7. Brought it home, dumped the fuel and poured fresh 93 at 40:1 in it and wham. Runs pretty good. Gonna throw a carb kit in, a plug and readjust the carb. Bet she'll run new

Your dad needs to file his rakers down atleast 50 thou ! That sthil will cut way faster if you drop the rakers, hes blowing powder friends ,that means the chain is sharp but the rakers are keeping them from cutting deep enough to grap a chip lol
@TheirsHopewithJesusChrist_2775 жыл бұрын
I believe that homelite is cutting better than your dads 044 the bar doesnt look like its getting too hot
@mathias123456785 жыл бұрын
No, sorry, the Homelite will not compete with the 044. Like always it's about sharpening the chain. Even her in this vid I have to say it's more than necessary for both saws. Beside that nice vid! Thanks for sharing!

@@mathias12345678 well yea thats true you have to take chain sharpness into consideration

Dear Small engine shop, Enjoyed your video, especially because on my walk tonight I found a Homelight super xl automatic sitting outside for trash pickup monday morning. 20 inch bar with a manual pump knob, and looks like it has not been used for many years. Does the automatic mean automatic oiling even though it has a manual pump? Also what oil ratio do you recommend, and any other guidance appreciated on putting it back in operating use. Thank you All the best Bruce
@SmallEngineRepair4 жыл бұрын
Wow that's awesome. Hopefully you can get it up and running. The automatic does mean it should have an auto oiler, hopefully that still works too. As for oil mix- I think they were supposed to be 40:1 but I run mine 50:1 just like my newer saws and havent had any trouble but I don't run it for long periods all at once. Keep me updated how it does. Thanks for watching.

@@SmallEngineRepair Thanks for your prompt reply. Spent today cleaning up the saw with compressed air and gasoline. Saw looks so nice I think I'll rather put in a display cabinet then using it. It has no spark so I will split the case and follow the procedure you showed in another video. I believe cleaning the coil and magnet might do the trick, as this machine sat so long that the chain was frozen in place from the solidified oil and dirt. I will also need to replace the fuel line. Do you know how to determine year built with serial or model number as the tag is intact? Will keep you posted and I thank people like you for making you tube a classroom for me and other students!!!
@stewartbruce24094 жыл бұрын
@@SmallEngineRepair I thoroughly cleaned the coil and magnet. Still zero spark. The switch and wiring are in good shape. Anything else to check, or do I just order a new coil? E-bay has them 14.95 free shipping, do you recommend them? Thanks again for your input.

Sharpen the chain and make sure it's oiling and if it's totally manual oiling pump the oil to it , keep the bar wet

I bought a Super XL back in the 80s with a 20 inch bar, it's a powerful all metal saw except for caps and air cleaner cover. I acquired 3 more over the years for spare parts since these saws have been out of production for many years. The old original Homelite recommended a 32 to 1 oil to gas mix with Homelite oil and 16 to one with other oils. Homelite today is owned by Techtronic Ind. out of Hong Kong and have been reduced to Chinese junk imo. Take care of that old Super XL, use good quality oil if Homelite oil isn't available. I also use 89 or 91 octane gasoline because there could be less alcohol in the higher grades of gasoline.

They are very heavy and don't turn that many rpm's but they have a good bit of torque. I watched your video, that saw is cutting great. I recently rebuilt my dad's saw so I have it a bit rich right now until everything breaks in. Thank you for watching and subscribing!
